WALKING IN SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY

Description: Walking in spiritual authority means submitting to Christ, standing firmly in His victory, resisting the enemy, and exercising the authority He has entrusted to believers.

INTRODUCTION

Spiritual authority is the delegated authority that believers receive through Jesus Christ. It is not based on human strength, position, education, wealth, age, or personality, but on the authority of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit. The believer does not fight for victory as though Christ has not won; rather, he stands in the victory Christ has already accomplished.

In 2 Corinthians 10:3-6, Paul explains that believers live in the flesh but do not wage war according to the flesh. Their weapons are spiritual and mighty through God. Strongholds must be pulled down, wrong arguments must be destroyed, and every thought must be brought into the obedience of Christ. Paul then speaks about readiness to deal with disobedience when obedience has been established.

Spiritual authority must therefore be exercised from a position of submission to God. Authority without obedience can become presumption, while obedience positions the believer to represent Christ effectively. When we walk in obedience, faith, truth, prayer, and the power of the Holy Spirit, we can stand against spiritual opposition and advance God's purposes.

1. UNDERSTAND THE SOURCE OF SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY

The authority of the believer originates from Jesus Christ. We do not possess independent spiritual power; we operate under the authority of the One who has conquered sin, Satan, and death.

a. Christ Has All Authority (Matthew 28:18) — Jesus declared that all authority in heaven and on earth belongs to Him. Every authority exercised by believers must therefore remain under His lordship.

b. Authority Is Given To Believers (Luke 10:19) — Jesus gave His disciples authority over the power of the enemy. This demonstrates that spiritual authority is delegated by Christ.

c. The Holy Spirit Empowers Believers (Acts 1:8) — The Holy Spirit gives believers power to become effective witnesses and representatives of Christ.

d. Christ's Name Is Above Every Name (Philippians 2:9-11) — The exalted name of Jesus carries supreme authority, and every power must ultimately acknowledge His lordship.

Biblical Example: The seventy disciples returned with joy because even demons were subject to them through the authority Jesus had given them (Luke 10:17-20).

2. WALK IN OBEDIENCE TO GOD

Spiritual authority is not separated from obedience. Paul connected readiness to deal with disobedience with the fulfilment of obedience.

a. Obedience Establishes Spiritual Readiness (2 Corinthians 10:6) — Before dealing with disobedience around us, we must first ensure that our own lives are submitted to God.

b. Submit Yourself To God (James 4:7) — Submission to God comes before resistance to the devil. Divine authority operates effectively through a life surrendered to God.

c. Obey Christ's Commands (John 14:15) — Love for Christ is demonstrated through obedience. A believer who desires to exercise spiritual authority must take God's commands seriously.

d. Walk In Holiness (1 Peter 1:15-16) — A holy life strengthens our witness and keeps our spiritual authority from being undermined by ungodly conduct.

Biblical Example: Joshua followed God's instructions concerning Jericho, and Israel experienced victory when they acted according to the divine command (Joshua 6:1-20).

3. STAND IN CHRIST'S VICTORY

Spiritual authority is exercised from the position of Christ's finished victory.

a. Christ Has Defeated Spiritual Powers (Colossians 2:15) — Jesus disarmed principalities and powers through His triumph at the cross. Believers stand in the victory He accomplished.

b. The Enemy Is Under Christ's Authority (Luke 10:19) — Satan's power is real, but it is not equal to the authority of Christ. Believers must therefore stand confidently in Christ.

c. Christ Lives In The Believer (Galatians 2:20) — The Christian life is no longer centred on self. Christ lives in the believer, making dependence upon Him essential.

d. God Gives Victory Through Christ (1 Corinthians 15:57) — Victory is received through Jesus Christ, and this should produce confidence, thanksgiving, and perseverance.

Biblical Example: David confronted Goliath with confidence in God's power rather than relying on human weapons or physical strength (1 Samuel 17:45-47).

4. USE SPIRITUAL WEAPONS WITH CONFIDENCE

The authority of the believer must be exercised through the spiritual weapons God has provided.

a. Use The Word Of God (Ephesians 6:17) — The Word is the sword of the Spirit and must be used to confront deception, temptation, and spiritual opposition.

b. Pray In The Spirit (Ephesians 6:18) — Prayer keeps believers spiritually alert and dependent upon God rather than upon their own strength.

c. Stand In Faith (Ephesians 6:16) — Faith enables believers to quench the fiery darts of the enemy and remain firm when opposition arises.

d. Speak The Truth Of God (John 8:31-32) — God's truth brings freedom and provides a firm foundation against deception and spiritual bondage.

Biblical Example: Jesus resisted Satan in the wilderness by answering every temptation with Scripture, demonstrating the power of God's Word in spiritual warfare (Matthew 4:1-11).

5. RESIST THE ENEMY FIRMLY

Spiritual authority includes the responsibility to resist Satan rather than surrendering to his attacks.

a. Resist The Devil (James 4:7) — Believers are commanded to resist the devil after submitting themselves to God, with the assurance that the enemy will flee.

b. Remain Sober And Vigilant (1 Peter 5:8) — Spiritual authority does not mean carelessness. Believers must remain alert because the enemy seeks opportunities to attack.

c. Stand Firm In Faith (1 Peter 5:9) — Resistance requires steadfast faith and the understanding that believers are not alone in facing spiritual opposition.

d. Refuse To Give The Enemy A Place (Ephesians 4:27) — Unresolved anger, bitterness, sin, and disobedience can provide opportunities for spiritual harm. Believers must close every door through which the enemy may gain influence.

Biblical Example: Daniel continued his prayer life despite the king's decree. He refused to surrender his devotion to God because of political pressure or threats (Daniel 6:10-23).

6. EXERCISE AUTHORITY OVER SPIRITUAL STRONGHOLDS

Spiritual authority is needed to confront strongholds, arguments, imaginations, and patterns that oppose God's purposes.

a. Pull Down Strongholds (2 Corinthians 10:4) — Divine weapons are powerful enough to destroy entrenched spiritual and mental strongholds.

b. Cast Down Wrong Arguments (2 Corinthians 10:5) — Arguments that exalt themselves against the knowledge of God must be confronted with divine truth.

c. Bring Thoughts Into Captivity (2 Corinthians 10:5) — Spiritual authority must also be exercised over the thought life by bringing thoughts under the obedience of Christ.

d. Destroy Deception With Truth (John 17:17) — God's Word is truth and provides the standard by which falsehood must be exposed and rejected.

Biblical Example: Gideon initially struggled with fear and insecurity, but God's word to him changed his understanding of himself and enabled him to act courageously (Judges 6:12-16, 36-40).

7. USE AUTHORITY TO ADVANCE GOD'S KINGDOM

Spiritual authority is not given for personal pride or self-exaltation. It is given so that God's purposes may advance and people may encounter Christ.

a. Make Disciples (Matthew 28:19-20) — Christ's authority empowers the Church to take the gospel to the nations and make disciples.

b. Be A Witness For Christ (Acts 1:8) — Spiritual power should produce effective witness and faithful service.

c. Minister Freedom To The Oppressed (Luke 4:18) — The gospel brings freedom to those who are bound and proclaims God's saving grace.

d. Glorify Christ Through Service (1 Peter 4:10-11) — Spiritual gifts and authority should be used to serve others so that God may receive the glory.

Biblical Example: Paul and Silas continued preaching Christ even after persecution and imprisonment. Their ministry brought salvation to the Philippian jailer and his household (Acts 16:22-34).

8. MAINTAIN HUMILITY WHILE WALKING IN AUTHORITY

True spiritual authority is never an excuse for pride. The greater the authority entrusted to us, the greater our responsibility to remain humble before God.

a. Give God The Glory (1 Corinthians 4:7) — Everything we have received has ultimately come from God. There is therefore no place for boasting.

b. Remain Under Christ's Lordship (Colossians 1:18) — Jesus must remain the Head of the Church and the Lord of our lives.

c. Serve With Humility (Philippians 2:3-5) — Spiritual authority should produce servant-heartedness rather than superiority over others.

d. Depend On God's Grace (2 Corinthians 12:9) — Human weakness reminds us that effectiveness in ministry comes from God's grace rather than personal ability.

Biblical Example: Paul continually pointed people away from himself and towards Jesus Christ, recognising that the power and effectiveness of ministry came from God (1 Corinthians 2:1-5).

CONCLUSION

Walking in spiritual authority begins with recognising that Jesus Christ is the source of all authority. He has defeated spiritual powers, given His followers authority, and supplied spiritual weapons for the battles they face. We therefore do not need to live as helpless victims of spiritual opposition.

However, spiritual authority must be accompanied by obedience, holiness, humility, faith, prayer, and dependence upon the Holy Spirit. Submit yourself to God, resist the devil, stand upon God's Word, pull down wrong arguments, and bring every thought under the obedience of Christ. As you walk in obedience, you will be better positioned to exercise the authority Christ has entrusted to you and advance His kingdom.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, thank You for the authority You have given me through Jesus Christ, in Jesus name.

2. Lord, help me to walk in complete obedience to Your Word, in Jesus name.

3. Father, strengthen me to stand firmly in the victory of Christ, in Jesus name.

4. Lord, empower me to resist every attack and strategy of the enemy, in Jesus name.

5. Father, destroy every spiritual stronghold operating against Your purpose for my life, in Jesus name.

6. Lord, give me grace to use Your Word effectively in spiritual warfare, in Jesus name.

7. Father, let every wrong argument and imagination opposing Your truth be destroyed, in Jesus name.

8. Lord, give me spiritual discernment, boldness, wisdom, and faith, in Jesus name.

9. Father, keep me humble and dependent upon Your grace as I exercise spiritual authority, in Jesus name.

10. Lord, use my life and ministry to advance Your kingdom and glorify the name of Jesus, in Jesus name.

PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS

1. You shall walk in the authority that Christ has given you.

2. Every power resisting the purpose of God for your life shall bow to the authority of Jesus Christ.

3. You shall not be a victim of spiritual oppression, fear, or intimidation.

4. Every stronghold confronting your life shall be pulled down by the power of God.

5. Every wrong argument and imagination opposing God's purpose for you shall be destroyed.

6. You shall receive grace to stand firmly upon the Word of God.

7. Every strategy of the enemy against your family, ministry, work, and destiny shall fail.

8. You shall walk in spiritual discernment, boldness, wisdom, and faith.

9. You shall exercise spiritual authority with humility, obedience, and dependence upon the Holy Spirit.

10. From this day forward, you shall walk in Christ's victory, advance His kingdom, and bring glory to His name.
