RESTORING ONE ANOTHER

Description: Restoring one another means helping believers who have fallen, become discouraged, or drifted away from God to return to spiritual strength, fellowship, peace, and faithful service.

INTRODUCTION

Paul's closing words to the Corinthians contain a powerful call to restoration. After addressing their weaknesses, divisions, spiritual problems, and need for self-examination, he did not leave them in condemnation. He urged them to be perfected, encouraged, united, and peaceful. His desire was that the church would experience the presence of “the God of love and peace.”

Restoration is an important ministry in the body of Christ. People can fall through sin, discouragement, disappointment, temptation, conflict, failure, or spiritual weakness. A fallen person does not always need rejection; often, they need someone who will lovingly help them rise again. The church must be a place where truth is upheld and where wounded and repentant people can find a pathway back to fellowship and usefulness.

Restoring one another does not mean excusing sin or ignoring accountability. Biblical restoration combines truth with grace, correction with compassion, and responsibility with forgiveness. We must learn to correct without humiliating, confront without hatred, forgive without bitterness, and help the fallen return to a faithful walk with Christ.

1. UNDERSTAND GOD'S HEART FOR RESTORATION

God does not delight in the destruction of people. He desires restoration and spiritual recovery.

a. Restore The Fallen Gently (Galatians 6:1) — Those who are spiritual should restore a person overtaken in a fault with meekness and self-awareness.

b. Seek The Straying Person (Matthew 18:12-14) — Jesus demonstrated God's concern for those who wander away from the fold.

c. Turn The Sinner Back (James 5:19-20) — Bringing someone back from the error of their way can save them from spiritual destruction.

d. Restore Fellowship Through Repentance (2 Corinthians 2:7-8) — Paul instructed the Corinthians to forgive, comfort, and reaffirm their love towards the repentant offender.

Biblical Example: Peter denied Jesus three times, yet Christ restored him and recommissioned him to care for His people (John 21:15-17).

2. RESTORE WITH A SPIRIT OF LOVE

Restoration must never be motivated by anger, pride, revenge, or a desire to expose another person's weakness.

a. Speak The Truth In Love (Ephesians 4:15) — Truth must be communicated with love so that correction produces growth rather than unnecessary injury.

b. Be Tenderhearted (Ephesians 4:32) — Kindness, compassion, and forgiveness should characterise our dealings with those who have failed.

c. Cover Offences With Love (1 Peter 4:8) — Genuine love does not delight in exposing the weaknesses of others but seeks their good.

d. Show Mercy To Those Who Doubt (Jude 22) — Some people need patience and mercy as they struggle with doubts, weakness, or spiritual uncertainty.

Biblical Example: Barnabas demonstrated a restorative spirit towards John Mark after Mark had previously withdrawn from missionary work (Acts 15:36-40; 2 Timothy 4:11).

3. CORRECT WITHOUT DESTROYING

Biblical restoration requires loving correction when someone has gone astray.

a. Confront The Matter Privately (Matthew 18:15) — Jesus instructed believers to address offences directly and privately before involving others.

b. Use Correction To Win The Person (Matthew 18:15) — The purpose of confrontation should be restoration and reconciliation rather than humiliation.

c. Be Gentle In Correction (2 Timothy 2:24-25) — The servant of the Lord must correct opponents with gentleness, hoping that God will grant repentance.

d. Correct Yourself First (Matthew 7:35) — Before dealing with another person's fault, believers must honestly examine their own lives.

Biblical Example: Nathan confronted David concerning his sin with Bathsheba. His courageous correction brought David to repentance rather than leaving him in deception (2 Samuel 12:1-13).

4. BEAR ONE ANOTHER'S BURDENS

Restoration becomes possible when believers refuse to leave struggling people alone.

a. Bear Spiritual Burdens (Galatians 6:2) — Christians are commanded to carry one another's burdens and fulfil the law of Christ.

b. Encourage The Discouraged (1 Thessalonians 5:14) — The church should warn the disorderly, comfort the discouraged, support the weak, and be patient with everyone.

c. Strengthen Weak Hands (Isaiah 35:3-4) — God's people should encourage those who are weak and fearful with words of faith and hope.

d. Build Others Up (Romans 15:1-2) — Those who are spiritually strong should bear with the weaknesses of others and seek their edification.

Biblical Example: Aaron and Hur supported Moses' hnds during Israel's battle with Amalek, demonstrating the power of standing with someone who is becoming weak (Exodus 17:10-13).

5. FORGIVE AND REAFFIRM LOVE

Restoration cannot succeed where bitterness and continual condemnation remain.

a. Forgive The Repentant (2 Corinthians 2:7) — Paul urged the church to forgive and comfort the person who had been disciplined.

b. Reaffirm Your Love (2 Corinthians 2:8) — Restoration requires positive expressions of acceptance after genuine repentance.

c. Forgive As Christ Forgave You (Colossians 3:13) — Believers must extend the same grace they have received from Christ.

d. Do Not Keep A Record Of Wrongs (1 Corinthians 13:5) — Love does not continually calculate offences or use past failures as weapons.

Biblical Example: Joseph forgave his brothers and refused to use his position of power to punish them for their past actions (Genesis 50:15-21).

6. RESTORE PEOPLE TO THEIR PURPOSE

God's restoration is not merely about bringing people back into fellowship; it is also about helping them become useful again.

a. Strengthen What Remains (Revelation 3:2) — God calls His people to strengthen the things that remain before they completely die.

b. Encourage Faithful Service (Hebrews 10:24) — Believers should provoke one another to love and good works.

c. Help The Weak Become Strong (Romans 15:1) — Those with greater spiritual strength should use it to support others.

d. Give People Opportunity To Grow (Philippians 1:6) — God continues His work in believers until it is completed.

Biblical Example: After denying Christ, Peter was restored and later became a bold witness and leader in the early church (Acts 2:14-41).

7. RESTORE UNITY AND PEACE

Restoration must contribute to the unity and peace of the church.

a. Be Of One Mind (2 Corinthians 13:11) — Paul called the Corinthians to develop unity rather than continue in division.

b. Live In Peace (Romans 12:18) — Believers should pursue peace as far as it depends upon them.

c. Preserve The Unity Of The Spirit (Ephesians 4:3) — Christians must make every effort to maintain unity through humility, patience, and love.

d. Let Peace Rule Your Heart (Colossians 3:15) — The peace of Christ should govern relationships within the body of Christ.

Biblical Example: Paul and Barnabas eventually continued their ministry separately after their disagreement, while the gospel continued to advance through both ministry teams (Acts 15:36-41).

8. BECOME AN AGENT OF RESTORATION

Every believer can participate in God's work of healing, reconciliation, strengthening, and restoration.

a. Encourage Others Regularly (Hebrews 3:13) — Believers should encourage one another continually so that no one becomes hardened by sin.

b. Pray For Those Who Are Struggling (James 5:16) — Prayer is a powerful means of bringing healing and spiritual strength.

c. Help Those Who Are Drifting (James 5:19-20) — We should not ignore those who are moving away from the truth.

d. Reflect The God Of Love And Peace (2 Corinthians 13:11) — Our lives should demonstrate the love and peace of God to those around us.

Biblical Example: Onesimus was transformed through Paul's ministry and became a useful brother and fellow servant rather than remaining defined by his past (Philemon 10-16; Colossians 4:9).

CONCLUSION

Restoring one another is part of the ministry Christ has entrusted to His church. We are not called merely to identify faults; we are called to help people recover. When someone falls, we should not rejoice in their failure, spread their story, or permanently define them by their mistake. We should pray, correct, encourage, forgive, and help them return to the path of righteousness.

Paul's desire for the Corinthians was that they would be perfected, comforted, united, and peaceful. This should also be our desire for one another. Let us become a church that combines holiness with mercy, correction with love, accountability with forgiveness, and truth with restoration. As we restore others, the God of love and peace will be glorified among us.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, give me a heart that desires the restoration and spiritual growth of others, in Jesus name.

2. Lord, give me wisdom to correct those who have fallen without destroying or discouraging them, in Jesus name.

3. Father, help me to restore the fallen with meekness, patience, compassion, and love, in Jesus name.

4. Lord, remove every spirit of pride, judgement, condemnation, and bitterness from my heart, in Jesus name.

5. Father, give me grace to forgive those who genuinely repent and to reaffirm my love towards them, in Jesus name.

6. Lord, strengthen every weak, discouraged, wounded, and struggling believer around me, in Jesus name.

7. Father, restore every person who has drifted away from You and bring them back into fellowship with Christ, in Jesus name.

8. Lord, heal broken relationships and restore peace, unity, and love among Your people, in Jesus name.

9. Father, restore every divine purpose, gift, calling, and assignment that has been weakened by failure or discouragement, in Jesus name.

10. Lord, make me an instrument of restoration, reconciliation, encouragement, and healing wherever You place me, in Jesus name.

PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS

1. You shall become an instrument through whom God restores the broken and strengthens the weak.

2. Every wounded area of your life shall receive divine healing and restoration.

3. The Lord shall restore relationships that are according to His will and purpose for your life.

4. You shall receive grace to forgive, reconcile, encourage, and restore others.

5. Every good gift, purpose, and assignment that has been weakened by past failure shall receive fresh strength.

6. You shall not be defined by your past mistakes; the grace of God shall give you a new beginning.

7. Every spirit of division, bitterness, condemnation, and strife around you shall give way to the peace of Christ.

8. You shall become spiritually strong and shall help others become strong in the Lord.

9. The God of love and peace shall establish your relationships, family, ministry, and fellowship.

10. You shall walk in maturity, unity, peace, and love, and your life shall become a channel of restoration to many, in Jesus name.
