Description: The God of love and peace calls His people to live in love, unity, reconciliation, spiritual maturity, and peace so that His presence will be evident among them.
INTRODUCTION
The character of God is revealed throughout Scripture as a character of love, mercy, grace, and peace. God does not merely give love and peace; He is the God of love and peace. His love is demonstrated in sending Jesus Christ for our salvation, while His peace is made available to those who trust Him and walk according to His Word.
In 2 Corinthians 13:11, Paul concluded his letter by calling the believers to spiritual maturity, encouragement, unity, and peace. He then declared that the God of love and peace would be with them. This shows that God's presence is closely connected with the kind of relationships and spiritual atmosphere His people cultivate.
As believers, we are called to reflect the nature of the God we serve. Where God's love is present, hatred, bitterness, and selfishness lose their influence. Where God's peace is present, confusion, strife, and division cannot have the final word. The church, family, and individual believer should become places where God's love and peace can be seen and experienced.
1. UNDERSTAND THAT GOD IS THE GOD OF LOVE
Love is not merely something God does; it is central to His nature.
a. God Demonstrates His Love Through Christ (John 3:16) — God's love was demonstrated by giving His only begotten Son so that humanity could receive eternal life through faith in Him.
b. God Loved Us While We Were Yet Sinners (Romans 5:8) — God's love was not dependent upon our perfection. Christ died for us while we were still sinners.
c. God's Love Is Everlasting (Jeremiah 31:3) — The Lord declares that He has loved His people with an everlasting love and continues to draw them with lovingkindness.
d. God's Love Should Transform Our Character (1 John 4:11) — Since God has loved us so greatly, believers are called to love one another.
Biblical Example: The father in the parable of the prodigal son demonstrated compassionate love by welcoming his returning son, restoring him, and celebrating his return (Luke 15:20-24).
2. RECEIVE GOD'S LOVE THROUGH CHRIST
We cannot properly express God's love to others until we understand and receive His love for ourselves.
a. God's Love Is Poured Into Our Hearts (Romans 5:5) — Through the Holy Spirit, the love of God is shed abroad in the hearts of believers.
b. Christ's Love Gives Us Security (Romans 8:38-39) — Nothing in creation can separate believers from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus.
c. God's Love Gives Us Identity (1 John 3:1) — The Father has demonstrated such love that believers are called the children of God.
d. God's Love Produces Gratitude And Worship (Psalm 116:1-2) — Recognising God's love should produce a response of gratitude, prayer, obedience, and worship.
Biblical Example: John the beloved understood his identity in God's love and repeatedly described himself as the disciple whom Jesus loved, reflecting the security he found in Christ's love (John 13:23; 21:20).
3. UNDERSTAND THAT GOD IS THE GOD OF PEACE
God's peace is more than the absence of conflict; it is the wholeness, security, and settledness that come from Him.
a. God Gives Peace To His People (Psalm 29:11) — The Lord gives strength to His people and blesses them with peace.
b. Christ Is Our Peace (Ephesians 2:14) — Jesus broke down the barriers that separated people and made peace through His redemptive work.
c. God Gives Peace In The Midst Of Trouble (John 16:33) — Jesus promised His disciples peace even though they would experience tribulation in the world.
d. God's Peace Guards The Heart (Philippians 4:6-7) — When believers pray instead of being controlled by anxiety, God's peace guards their hearts and minds through Christ.
Biblical Example: Jesus demonstrated supernatural peace when He slept in a boat during a violent storm. He then arose and commanded the wind and sea, showing His authority over the situation (Mark 4:37-39).
4. LET THE PEACE OF GOD RULE YOUR HEART
God's peace must become the governing influence within the believer.
a. Refuse To Be Controlled By Anxiety (Philippians 4:6-7) — Prayer, thanksgiving, and trust in God help believers refuse to surrender their hearts to anxiety.
b. Let Christ's Peace Rule You (Colossians 3:15) — Believers are instructed to allow the peace of Christ to govern their hearts and relationships.
c. Trust God In Difficult Circumstances (Isaiah 26:3) — God keeps in perfect peace those whose minds are stayed on Him because they trust in Him.
d. Walk In The Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) — Peace is part of the fruit produced in the life of a person who walks under the influence of the Holy Spirit.
Biblical Example: Paul and Silas demonstrated inner peace when they prayed and sang praises to God at midnight despite being beaten and imprisoned (Acts 16:22-25).
5. LET LOVE GOVERN YOUR RELATIONSHIPS
The presence of God's love should change the way believers relate to one another.
a. Love One Another (John 13:34-35) — Jesus commanded His disciples to love one another, making love a distinguishing mark of His followers.
b. Love Covers Offences (1 Peter 4:8) — Genuine love prevents believers from continually exposing, magnifying, and spreading the faults of others.
c. Forgive One Another (Colossians 3:13) — Believers are called to forgive grievances as the Lord has forgiven them.
d. Put On Love Above Everything Else (Colossians 3:14) — Love binds believers together in spiritual maturity and unity.
Biblical Example: Joseph demonstrated remarkable love by forgiving his brothers and refusing to repay their evil with revenge (Genesis 50:15-21).
6. PURSUE PEACE WITH OTHER PEOPLE
God's people are called to actively pursue peace rather than merely desire it.
a. Live Peaceably With Everyone (Romans 12:18) — Believers should pursue peaceful relationships as far as it depends on them.
b. Avoid Quarrels And Strife (Titus 3:9) — God's people should avoid foolish controversies and unnecessary disputes that produce division.
c. Be A Peacemaker (Matthew 5:9) — Jesus called peacemakers blessed because they demonstrate the character of God.
d. Overcome Evil With Good (Romans 12:20-21) — Believers should not allow another person's wrongdoing to control their response. Goodness and love are powerful responses to evil.
Biblical Example: Abraham chose peace with Lot by allowing Lot to choose the land he wanted rather than allowing their possessions and herdsmen to produce continual conflict (Genesis 13:5-11).
7. PROTECT THE UNITY OF THE CHURCH
Love and peace are essential to the spiritual health of the body of Christ.
a. Be Of One Mind (2 Corinthians 13:11) — Paul called the Corinthians to unity rather than division and contention.
b. Maintain The Unity Of The Spirit (Ephesians 4:3) — Believers must make every effort to preserve unity through humility, patience, and love.
c. Refuse Division And Strife (1 Corinthians 1:10) — The church should not be fragmented by competing personalities, preferences, or factions.
d. Let Love Build The Church (1 Corinthians 8:1) — Knowledge without love can produce pride, but love builds people and strengthens the body of Christ.
Biblical Example: The early church devoted themselves to fellowship, teaching, prayer, and shared life, demonstrating the power of unity among believers (Acts 2:42-47).
8. EXPERIENCE GOD'S PRESENCE THROUGH LOVE AND PEACE
The God of love and peace desires His presence to be evident among His people.
a. Walk In Obedience (John 14:23) — Jesus connected love for Him with obedience to His Word and promised the presence of God with those who love Him.
b. Let Peace Characterise Your Life (Romans 15:33) — Paul described God as the God of peace and prayed that He would be with the believers.
c. Reflect Christ's Character (2 Corinthians 3:18) — As believers behold Christ, they are transformed progressively into His image.
d. Become A Carrier Of God's Love And Peace (Matthew 5:14-16) — Believers should allow the light of Christ to shine through their character and relationships so others can see God's work.
Biblical Example: The church at Antioch became a place of spiritual growth, fellowship, teaching, and missionary expansion, demonstrating the fruit of God's presence among His people (Acts 11:19-26).
CONCLUSION
The God we serve is the God of love and peace. His love has been demonstrated through Jesus Christ, and His peace is available to those who trust Him. Because we belong to Him, our lives should reflect His character. We must receive His love, walk in His peace, forgive others, pursue reconciliation, and protect the unity of the church.
Paul's final instruction to the Corinthians remains relevant to every believer: grow spiritually, encourage one another, remain united, and live in peace. When God's people walk in love and peace, they create an atmosphere where His presence can be recognised and His purposes can advance. May our homes, churches, ministries, and relationships become living testimonies of the God of love and peace.
