PROVING YOUR FAITH

INTRODUCTION

Paul's instruction to the Corinthians was direct: “Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves.” The Corinthian believers had spent time questioning Paul's ministry, but Paul challenged them to turn the examination inward. They needed to test their own spiritual condition and determine whether Christ was truly at work within them.

Faith is more than a verbal profession. Genuine faith produces evidence in the life of the believer. It changes our values, influences our decisions, produces obedience, develops godly character, and enables us to remain faithful during difficult seasons. We do not earn salvation by our works, but genuine saving faith produces works that demonstrate its reality.

God allows our faith to pass through tests, not because He does not know us, but because testing reveals and strengthens what is genuine. Just as gold is tested by fire, faith is demonstrated through trials, obedience, perseverance, love, and spiritual fruit. The question is therefore not merely, “Do I say that I believe?” but, “Does my life demonstrate that I believe?”

1. UNDERSTAND WHAT IT MEANS TO PROVE YOUR FAITH

Proving faith means testing and demonstrating its genuineness.

a. Examine Yourself (2 Corinthians 13:5) — Every believer should honestly evaluate his or her spiritual condition rather than assuming that everything is well.

b. Test The Foundation Of Your Faith (1 Corinthians 3:11) — Jesus Christ is the only true foundation upon which genuine Christian faith can be built.

c. Look For Evidence Of Genuine Faith (James 2:18) — Faith becomes visible through the actions that flow from it.

d. Remain Established In Christ (Colossians 2:6-7) — Genuine faith continues to grow deeper and stronger in Christ.

Biblical Example: The Bereans examined the Scriptures daily to verify Paul's teaching, demonstrating a faith that valued truth and spiritual discernment (Acts 17:10-12).

2. PROVE YOUR FAITH THROUGH OBEDIENCE

Obedience is one of the clearest demonstrations that faith is genuine.

a. Obey Christ's Commands (John 14:15) — Jesus connected love for Him with obedience to His commandments.

b. Be A Doer Of The Word (James 1:22) — Hearing God's Word without acting upon it can produce spiritual self-deception.

c. Walk In God's Ways (Deuteronomy 10:12-13) — Genuine faith produces a willingness to honour God through daily conduct.

d. Obey Even When It Is Difficult (Luke 5:4-6) — Faith sometimes requires obedience before we understand how God will fulfil His promise.

Biblical Example: Abraham demonstrated his faith through obedience when he responded to God's command to offer Isaac, trusting God's promise even when the instruction was difficult (Hebrews 11:17-19).

3. PROVE YOUR FAITH THROUGH YOUR CHARACTER

Faith should transform who we are, not merely what we say.

a. Develop Christlike Character (Galatians 5:22-23) — The fruit of the Spirit provides visible evidence of God's work within us.

b. Walk In Integrity (Psalm 15:1-2) — A person who walks uprightly and speaks truth demonstrates a faith that affects daily conduct.

c. Control Your Words (Ephesians 4:29) — Genuine faith influences the way we speak to and about others.

d. Practise Love (John 13:35) — Jesus taught that love among believers would identify them as His disciples.

Biblical Example: Daniel maintained integrity under intense pressure. His enemies could find no legitimate fault in his conduct, demonstrating consistency between his faith and his character (Daniel 6:4-5).

4. PROVE YOUR FAITH IN TIMES OF TRIAL

Trials reveal the quality and strength of our faith.

a. Understand The Purpose Of Testing (1 Peter 1:6-7) — The testing of faith can produce something more precious than gold and result in praise, honour, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

b. Rejoice In God's Faithfulness (James 1:2-4) — Trials can produce patience and spiritual maturity when faced with faith in God.

c. Refuse To Abandon Christ (Job 13:15) — Faith remains committed to God even when circumstances are painful and difficult.

d. Trust God Through Uncertainty (Proverbs 3:5-6) — Genuine faith continues trusting God even when the path ahead is not completely understood.

Biblical Example: Job endured severe losses and suffering yet continued to acknowledge God's sovereignty and ultimately experienced God's restoration (Job 1:20-22; 42:10-12).

5. PROVE YOUR FAITH THROUGH SPIRITUAL FRUIT

A living faith should produce visible spiritual results.

a. Bear The Fruit Of The Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) — Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control should become increasingly evident.

b. Abide In Christ (John 15:4-5) — Fruitfulness comes from remaining connected to Christ.

c. Produce Fruit That Remains (John 15:16) — Christ calls believers to produce lasting fruit that brings glory to God.

d. Let Your Life Point Others To Christ (Matthew 5:16) — Good works should cause others to glorify God.

Biblical Example: Barnabas was described as a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and his life helped strengthen many believers (Acts 11:22-24).

6. PROVE YOUR FAITH THROUGH LOVE

Love provides powerful evidence that Christ is at work within us.

a. Love God Wholeheartedly (Matthew 22:37) — Genuine faith begins with wholehearted love for God.

b. Love Other Believers (1 John 4:20-21) — Love for God cannot be separated from love for our brothers and sisters.

c. Love Your Enemies (Matthew 5:44) — Christ calls believers to respond to hostility with love and prayer.

d. Serve Others In Love (Galatians 5:13) — Christian freedom should become an opportunity to serve others through love.

Biblical Example: The Good Samaritan demonstrated practical love by caring for a wounded man whom others had ignored (Luke 10:30-37).

7. PROVE YOUR FAITH THROUGH PERSEVERANCE

Genuine faith does not easily abandon the journey.

a. Continue In Christ (Colossians 1:23) — Believers are called to remain grounded and steadfast in the faith.

b. Run With Endurance (Hebrews 12:1-2) — The Christian journey requires perseverance and a continual focus on Jesus.

c. Do Not Grow Weary (Galatians 6:9) — Faithful believers continue doing good even when results are delayed.

d. Finish Your Course (2 Timothy 4:7) — Paul's testimony reminds us that the goal is not merely to begin well but to finish faithfully.

Biblical Example: Caleb remained faithful to God for decades and, even in old age, continued believing God's promise concerning the land (Joshua 14:6-13).

8. PROVE THAT CHRIST IS IN YOU

The ultimate evidence of faith is the presence and transforming work of Christ within the believer.

a. Christ Lives In You (Galatians 2:20) — The believer's old self is surrendered so that Christ's life may increasingly be expressed through him.

b. The Spirit Dwells In You (Romans 8:9) — Those who belong to Christ have His Spirit dwelling within them.

c. Walk In Newness Of Life (Romans 6:4) — Union with Christ produces a new pattern of living.

d. Let Your Life Reflect Christ (Philippians 1:20-21) — Christ should be magnified through both our conduct and our priorities.

Biblical Example: After his conversion, Paul experienced a radical transformation. The man who once persecuted the church became one of Christ's most devoted servants (Acts 9:1-22).

CONCLUSION

Proving your faith is not about trying to convince God that you are saved. It is about examining your life and allowing the evidence of genuine faith to become visible. Faith should produce obedience, character, love, spiritual fruit, perseverance, and a transformed relationship with Christ. Where these areas are weak, we should not pretend; we should return to God and ask Him to strengthen our faith.

Let the Word of God examine you. Let the Holy Spirit search your heart. Let your conduct demonstrate what you profess with your lips. When trials come, continue trusting God; when obedience is difficult, obey Him; when relationships are challenging, walk in love; and when you fall, repent and return to Christ. May your life continually prove that Jesus Christ is truly at work in you.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, strengthen my faith and make it genuine, living, and firmly established in Christ, in Jesus name.

2. Lord, give me grace to demonstrate my faith through consistent obedience to Your Word, in Jesus name.

3. Father, let the character of Christ be formed in me and evident in my daily life, in Jesus name.

4. Lord, strengthen my faith whenever I pass through trials, difficulties, and seasons of uncertainty, in Jesus name.

5. Father, let my life produce abundant fruit through the power of the Holy Spirit, in Jesus name.

6. Lord, fill my heart with genuine love for You and for the people around me, in Jesus name.

7. Father, give me grace to remain faithful and persevere until the end, in Jesus name.

8. Lord, remove every hypocrisy, compromise, and spiritual weakness that contradicts my profession of faith, in Jesus name.

9. Father, let Jesus Christ be clearly seen in my character, conduct, decisions, and relationships, in Jesus name.

10. Lord, help me to finish my Christian journey faithfully and receive the crown of life, in Jesus name.

PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS

1. Your faith shall be genuine, strong, living, and firmly established in Christ.

2. You shall receive grace to obey God even when obedience is difficult.

3. The character of Christ shall increasingly be seen in your life.

4. Every trial you encounter shall strengthen rather than destroy your faith.

5. Your life shall produce abundant and lasting spiritual fruit.

6. The love of Christ shall govern your relationships, words, and actions.

7. You shall not abandon your faith because of difficulties, delays, or disappointments.

8. Every weakness, compromise, and spiritual inconsistency shall give way to genuine transformation.

9. Jesus Christ shall be clearly revealed through your life, and many shall be drawn towards Him through your testimony.

10. You shall prove your faith by your life, remain faithful to Christ, and finish your Christian journey well, in Jesus name.
