Description: Standing firm in the true gospel means remaining faithful to the biblical message of Jesus Christ, rejecting every distortion, and continuing in the truth regardless of pressure or opposition.

INTRODUCTION

The gospel of Jesus Christ is the foundation of the Christian faith. It is the good news that Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried, rose again, and provides salvation to everyone who believes in Him. Because the gospel is God's truth, believers must not treat it as something that can be modified according to human preferences, cultural expectations, or popular opinion.

In 2 Corinthians 11:4, Paul warned the Corinthian believers about the danger of receiving another Jesus, another spirit, or another gospel. False teachers were presenting messages that could appear Christian while moving people away from the truth Paul had preached. The warning shows that spiritual deception does not always come in an openly hostile form; sometimes it comes through subtle alterations of the truth.

Standing firm therefore requires knowledge, conviction, discernment, and perseverance. Believers must know the true gospel, examine every teaching by Scripture, reject false doctrine, and remain committed to Christ even when the truth is unpopular. The Church must never exchange the unchanging gospel for a message designed merely to satisfy human desires.

1. KNOW THE CONTENT OF THE TRUE GOSPEL

A believer cannot stand firmly in the gospel without knowing what the gospel teaches. Biblical understanding gives us a foundation against deception.

a. Christ Died For Our Sins (1 Corinthians 15:3) — The death of Jesus for our sins is central to the gospel. Without the cross, there is no biblical message of redemption.

b. Christ Was Raised From The Dead (1 Corinthians 15:4) — The resurrection is an essential part of the gospel and demonstrates Christ's victory over sin and death.

c. Salvation Is Through Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12) — Scripture clearly teaches that salvation is found in Christ and not through another person, system, or religious philosophy.

d. The Gospel Is God's Power For Salvation (Romans 1:16) — The gospel is God's power to save everyone who believes, and it must therefore be proclaimed without shame or distortion.

Biblical Example: Paul reminded the Corinthians of the gospel he had preached to them and clearly presented Christ's death, burial, resurrection, and appearances as foundational truths (1 Corinthians 15:1-8).

2. REJECT EVERY OTHER GOSPEL

Paul's warning makes it clear that not every message presented in the name of Christianity is the true gospel. Believers must have the courage to reject anything that contradicts God's revealed truth.

a. Do Not Turn To A Different Gospel (Galatians 1:6) — Paul was astonished that believers could so quickly turn from the true gospel to another message.

b. Recognise That A Distorted Gospel Is Not The True Gospel (Galatians 1:7) — False teachers can trouble believers by perverting the gospel of Christ.

c. Reject Any Gospel That Contradicts Scripture (Galatians 1:8-9) — Paul pronounced a strong warning against anyone who preached a gospel contrary to the one already received.

d. Do Not Exchange Grace For Human Achievement (Galatians 5:1-4) — Salvation cannot be reduced to human performance or religious observance.

Biblical Example: Paul confronted the Galatian error because some teachers were attempting to add requirements to the gospel, thereby undermining the sufficiency of Christ's work (Galatians 2:16; 5:1-4).

3. KEEP JESUS CHRIST AT THE CENTRE

The true gospel is centred on Jesus Christ. Any message that moves Christ from the centre has already moved away from the heart of the gospel.

a. Jesus Is The Way To The Father (John 14:6) — Christ is the way, the truth, and the life, and access to the Father is through Him.

b. Jesus Is The Only Saviour (Acts 4:12) — The Church must never present another source of salvation alongside Christ.

c. Christ Must Have Pre-eminence (Colossians 1:18) — Jesus must have first place in the Church, in ministry, and in the life of every believer.

d. Preach Christ Crucified (1 Corinthians 1:23) — Paul refused to replace the message of the cross with human philosophy or popular ideas.

Biblical Example: John the Baptist did not seek to build his own following. He directed attention to Jesus and declared, “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30).

4. TEST EVERY TEACHING BY SCRIPTURE

Standing firm requires discernment. Believers must not accept a message simply because it comes from a respected preacher or sounds spiritually attractive.

a. Search The Scriptures (Acts 17:11) — The Bereans examined the Scriptures daily to determine whether Paul's teaching was true.

b. Test The Spirits (1 John 4:1) — John instructed believers to test spiritual claims because many false prophets have gone into the world.

c. Hold Fast To Sound Doctrine (Titus 1:9) — Church leaders must hold firmly to trustworthy biblical teaching so they can encourage believers and refute error.

d. Test Everything And Hold Fast To What Is Good (1 Thessalonians 5:21) — Christians should examine what they hear carefully and retain what agrees with God's truth.

Biblical Example: The Bereans demonstrated spiritual maturity by receiving Paul's message eagerly while examining the Scriptures to verify his teaching (Acts 17:10-12).

5. GUARD THE GOSPEL AGAINST COMPROMISE

The gospel must remain pure even when believers face pressure to soften or alter its message.

a. Please God Rather Than People (Galatians 1:10) — Paul refused to make human approval the standard of his ministry because his primary responsibility was to serve Christ.

b. Do Not Be Ashamed Of The Gospel (Romans 1:16) — Believers must boldly identify with the gospel because it is God's power for salvation.

c. Do Not Add To God's Word (Proverbs 30:5-6) — God's Word must not be altered by human additions that claim divine authority.

d. Refuse Worldly Philosophies That Replace Christ (Colossians 2:8) — Believers must beware of teachings based on human tradition rather than Christ.

Biblical Example: Moses remained faithful to God's instructions and repeatedly confronted Pharaoh rather than changing God's demand to suit the ruler's preferences (Exodus 5-12).

6. LIVE ACCORDING TO THE TRUE GOSPEL

Standing for the gospel involves more than defending correct doctrine. The truth we believe must shape the way we live.

a. Walk Worthy Of The Gospel (Philippians 1:27) — Believers are called to conduct themselves in a way that reflects the gospel they profess.

b. Let Your Conduct Match Your Faith (Titus 2:7-8) — Christian teaching should be accompanied by integrity, seriousness, and sound speech.

c. Practise What You Believe (James 1:22) — Hearing God's Word without obeying it produces self-deception.

d. Demonstrate Christlike Character (Galatians 5:22-23) — The gospel produces spiritual fruit through the work of the Holy Spirit in the believer's life.

Biblical Example: Zacchaeus demonstrated the transforming power of encountering Christ by changing his conduct and making restitution after receiving Jesus (Luke 19:1-10).

7. STAND FIRM WHEN THE TRUTH IS OPPOSED

Faithfulness to the gospel may bring opposition. Believers must not abandon truth simply because it becomes difficult or unpopular.

a. Stand Firm In The Faith (1 Corinthians 16:13) — Christians are called to watch, stand firmly in the faith, act courageously, and remain strong.

b. Endure Hardship (2 Timothy 4:5) — Paul instructed Timothy to remain sober, endure afflictions, and fulfil his ministry.

c. Contend For The Faith (Jude 1:3) — Believers have a responsibility to contend earnestly for the faith once delivered to the saints.

d. Hold Fast To Your Confession (Hebrews 10:23) — Christians should hold firmly to their confession because God is faithful to His promises.

Biblical Example: The apostles continued preaching Christ despite being commanded by the authorities to stop. They declared that they must obey God rather than men (Acts 4:18-20; 5:27-29).

8. PRESERVE THE TRUE GOSPEL FOR THE NEXT GENERATION

The gospel has been entrusted to us as stewards. We must preserve it faithfully and pass it on without corruption.

a. Guard The Good Deposit (2 Timothy 1:13-14) — Paul instructed Timothy to hold firmly to sound words and guard the good deposit through the Holy Spirit.

b. Teach Faithful People (2 Timothy 2:2) — Truth must be entrusted to faithful people who can teach others accurately.

c. Preach The Word In Every Season (2 Timothy 4:2) — Ministers must proclaim God's Word faithfully whether it is convenient or inconvenient.

d. Remain Faithful Until Christ Comes (Revelation 2:25) — Believers must hold firmly to what they have received until the Lord returns.

Biblical Example: Timothy received the Scriptures from childhood and was instructed to continue in the truth he had learned and become a faithful teacher of others (2 Timothy 1:5; 3:14-15).

CONCLUSION

Standing firm in the true gospel requires more than knowing Christian vocabulary. We must know the biblical Christ, understand the gospel of grace, test every teaching by Scripture, reject distortions, and refuse compromise. Paul's warning about another Jesus, another spirit, and another gospel remains a serious call for every believer to remain grounded in truth.

Do not exchange the gospel for popularity, human philosophy, religious tradition, or messages designed merely to satisfy human desires. Keep Christ at the centre, live according to His Word, stand courageously when truth is challenged, and faithfully pass the gospel to the next generation. May you remain established in the true gospel and faithful to Christ until the end.
