Description: This study reveals the significance of the baptism of Jesus Christ and the spiritual lessons believers can learn from His example.
INTRODUCTION
Matthew chapter 3 records one of the most significant moments in the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ: His baptism by John the Baptist in the Jordan River. Though Jesus was sinless and had no need for repentance, He submitted Himself to baptism in obedience to the will of God and as an example for believers.
At His baptism, heaven opened, the Holy Spirit descended like a dove, and the voice of the Father declared His approval of the Son. This powerful event revealed the divine identity of Jesus and marked the beginning of His public ministry.
The baptism of Jesus teaches believers about obedience, humility, identification with God’s purpose, spiritual empowerment, and the importance of living under divine approval.
1. JESUS’ BAPTISM DEMONSTRATED OBEDIENCE TO GOD
Obedience is foundational to fulfilling divine purpose.
a) Jesus willingly came to John for baptism (Matthew 3:13)
Though He was the Son of God, Jesus humbled Himself and obeyed God’s divine order.
b) Jesus fulfilled all righteousness (Matthew 3:15)
His baptism demonstrated complete submission to the Father’s will.
c) Obedience pleases God (1 Samuel 15:22)
God values willing obedience more than outward religious activities.
d) Believers are called to follow Christ’s example (1 Peter 2:21)
Jesus modelled humility and obedience for all who follow Him.
Biblical Example:
Abraham obeyed God’s instruction by faith, even when the path was difficult (Genesis 22:1-3).
2. BAPTISM IDENTIFIES BELIEVERS WITH GOD’S PURPOSE
Baptism represents surrender and new life.
a) Baptism symbolises identification (Romans 6:3-4)
It represents dying to the old life and rising into a new life with Christ.
b) Jesus identified with humanity (Hebrews 2:17)
Though sinless, Christ stood among sinners to fulfil His redemptive mission.
c) Baptism reflects public commitment (Acts 2:38)
It demonstrates a believer’s decision to follow God wholeheartedly.
d) God calls believers into transformed living (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Those who belong to Christ are called to live differently from the world.
Biblical Example:
The Ethiopian eunuch publicly expressed his faith through baptism after receiving the Gospel (Acts 8:36-38).
3. THE HOLY SPIRIT EMPOWERS THOSE WHO WALK WITH GOD
Divine empowerment follows surrender and obedience.
a) The Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus (Matthew 3:16)
This marked the beginning of His public ministry and divine empowerment.
b) The Spirit equips believers for service (Acts 1:8)
God empowers His people to fulfil their assignments effectively.
c) Spiritual empowerment produces boldness and fruitfulness (Galatians 5:22-23)
The Holy Spirit transforms character and strengthens believers spiritually.
d) God desires continual fellowship through the Spirit (Romans 8:14)
Believers are called to live under the guidance and influence of the Holy Spirit.
Biblical Example:
The disciples received power after the Holy Spirit came upon them at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4).
4. GOD CONFIRMS AND APPROVES THOSE WHO WALK IN HIS WILL
God honours lives surrendered to Him.
a) The Father declared His approval of Jesus (Matthew 3:17)
Heaven affirmed Jesus as the beloved Son in whom the Father was well pleased.
b) God delights in obedience and faithfulness (Psalm 147:11)
The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear Him and trust Him.
c) A surrendered life attracts divine favour (Proverbs 3:3-4)
Walking faithfully with God positions believers for His approval and blessing.
d) God’s approval matters more than human praise (Galatians 1:10)
Believers must seek to please God above all else.
Biblical Example:
Enoch walked faithfully with God and received divine approval because of his life of obedience (Hebrews 11:5).
CONCLUSION
The baptism of Jesus was a powerful moment of obedience, humility, divine revelation, and spiritual empowerment. It revealed Christ’s submission to the Father’s will and marked the beginning of His earthly ministry.
Believers today are called to follow Christ’s example through obedience, surrender, spiritual commitment, and dependence on the Holy Spirit. When we walk in alignment with God’s will, we position ourselves for divine empowerment and heavenly approval.
