INTRODUCTION:

A vow is a solemn promise made to God, often in times of distress or need, with the expectation of divine intervention. Many people make vows to God but forget to pay them once they receive their breakthrough. However, God never forgets a vow that is fulfilled. He honours those who honour Him by keeping their commitments. Jacob’s life is a great example of how God remembers paid vows and rewards faithfulness.

1. JACOB'S VOW AND GOD'S FAITHFULNESS

  • a) Jacob Made a Vow in Bethel (Genesis 28:20-22)
In his time of distress, Jacob promised to serve God if God would protect and provide for him.
  • b) God Remembered Jacob’s Vow (Genesis 31:13)
Years later, God reminded Jacob of his vow, showing that God does not forget.
  • c) Jacob Returned to Fulfil His Vow (Genesis 35:1-7)
After many years, Jacob returned to Bethel to honour his promise.
  • d) God Blessed Jacob’s Obedience (Genesis 35:9-12)
As Jacob fulfilled his vow, God reaffirmed His promises to him.
  • e) Biblical Example: Hannah (1 Samuel 1:11, 26-28)
Hannah vowed to give her son to God, and when she fulfilled it, God blessed her with more children.

2. GOD TAKES VOWS SERIOUSLY

  • a) Vows Are Binding Before God (Numbers 30:2)
When we make a vow, it is a sacred obligation before the Lord.
  • b) Breaking a Vow is Sinful (Ecclesiastes 5:4-6)
It is better not to vow than to vow and not fulfil it.
  • c) Unfulfilled Vows Can Lead to Loss (Deuteronomy 23:21-23)
Failure to pay a vow can bring divine displeasure.
  • d) God Will Call Us to Account (Matthew 12:36)
Every promise we make to God will be remembered.
  • e) Biblical Example: Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1-11)
They made a commitment but held back part of it, leading to divine judgment.

3. THE REWARDS OF FULFILLING YOUR VOWS

  • a) God Opens New Doors of Blessings (Psalm 76:11-12)
Keeping a vow positions us for greater divine favour.
  • b) Supernatural Provision (Genesis 28:20-22)
Jacob's life prospered after he fulfilled his vow.
  • c) Divine Remembrance (Genesis 35:1-7)
God called Jacob back to Bethel, showing that He remembers paid vows.
  • d) Breakthrough in Difficult Situations (1 Samuel 1:11, 26-28)
Hannah's faithfulness led to more blessings.
  • e) Biblical Example: Jonah (Jonah 2:9-10)
Jonah vowed to obey God, and once he committed, he was delivered.

4. REASONS PEOPLE FAIL TO PAY THEIR VOWS

  • a) Forgetfulness (Deuteronomy 8:18-19)
Some forget their commitments once they receive blessings.
  • b) Lack of Faith (Matthew 6:30-33)
Doubt and fear make people hold back their vows.
  • c) Materialism and Greed (1 Timothy 6:9-10)
Some prefer personal gain over fulfilling their promises.
  • d) External Pressures (Matthew 26:69-75)
Peer pressure and societal expectations can make people break vows.
  • e) Biblical Example: The Israelites (Psalm 78:36-37)
They made promises to God but failed to keep them.

5. HOW TO REMAIN FAITHFUL IN KEEPING YOUR VOWS

  • a) Make Only Thoughtful and Sincere Vows (Ecclesiastes 5:2)
Avoid rash vows and be intentional in your commitments.
  • b) Keep Records of Your Vows (Habakkuk 2:2-3)
Writing down your vows helps you remember and fulfil them.
  • c) Pray for Strength and Provision (Philippians 4:13)
Ask for divine help to remain faithful to your commitments.
  • d) Prioritise God in All You Do (Matthew 6:33)
Seek first the Kingdom, and all things will be added to you.
  • e) Biblical Example: David (Psalm 116:12-14)
David recognised the importance of fulfilling his vows to God.

CONCLUSION:

God never forgets the vows we make, and He certainly remembers when we fulfil them. As seen in the life of Jacob, keeping our promises to God leads to divine favour, provision, and remembrance. Let us be faithful in fulfilling our vows, knowing that God rewards those who honour Him.
