OVERCOMING SPIRITUAL IMMATURITY

OVERCOMING SPIRITUAL IMMATURITY

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Hebrews 5:12-14
"For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil."

Supporting Texts: 1 Corinthians 3:1-3, Ephesians 4:13-15, 2 Peter 3:18, 1 Peter 2:2, Philippians 3:12-15

INTRODUCTION

Spiritual immaturity is a state where a believer remains weak in faith, unable to handle deeper truths, and constantly struggles with fundamental Christian principles. Just as physical growth is necessary for survival, spiritual growth is essential for a victorious Christian life. Many believers remain in spiritual infancy, relying on others for their spiritual nourishment instead of growing into maturity.

God desires that every believer moves beyond the basics and grows into a strong, mature Christian, capable of discerning right from wrong, making sound spiritual decisions, and fulfilling their divine purpose. In this sermon, we will examine the signs of spiritual immaturity, its dangers, and the steps to overcoming it.

1. SIGNS OF SPIRITUAL IMMATURITY

Spiritual immaturity is evident in the lives of those who refuse to grow in their faith and understanding of God's word.

a) Lack of Discernment
Hebrews 5:14 explains that mature believers discern good and evil, but immature ones struggle to distinguish between right and wrong.

b) Inability to Handle Spiritual Responsibility
1 Corinthians 3:1-3 describes believers who still need milk instead of strong meat, showing they are not ready for deeper responsibilities in the kingdom.

c) Easily Offended and Spiritually Unstable
Ephesians 4:14 warns against being tossed to and fro by every wind of doctrine, which is a mark of immaturity.

d) Lack of Spiritual Appetite for the Word
1 Peter 2:2 instructs believers to desire the sincere milk of the word, which leads to growth, but many remain indifferent to Bible study and prayer.

e) Biblical Example: The Corinthian Church (1 Corinthians 3:1-3)
Paul rebuked the Corinthians for their spiritual immaturity, evident in their divisions, envy, and strife.

2. DANGERS OF SPIRITUAL IMMATURITY

Remaining spiritually immature has serious consequences for a believer’s life and destiny.

a) Vulnerability to Deception
Ephesians 4:14 warns that immature believers are easily deceived by false teachings.

b) Lack of Power and Authority
Luke 10:19 shows that authority is given to mature believers who walk in obedience and faith.

c) Ineffectiveness in Ministry
Hebrews 5:12 explains that some believers should be teachers but still need to be taught, making them ineffective in ministry.

d) Repeated Failures and Spiritual Stagnation
Philippians 3:12-15 encourages believers to press toward growth, but immaturity keeps them stagnant.

e) Biblical Example: The Disciples Before Pentecost (Matthew 26:40-45)
Before receiving the Holy Spirit, the disciples struggled with fear, lack of understanding, and inconsistency.

3. STEPS TO OVERCOMING SPIRITUAL IMMATURITY

To grow into maturity, believers must take deliberate steps toward spiritual growth.

a) Develop a Consistent Prayer Life
Luke 18:1 teaches that men ought always to pray and not faint. A life of prayer strengthens a believer spiritually.

b) Study and Meditate on God's Word Daily
Joshua 1:8 commands believers to meditate on the Word day and night for success and spiritual maturity.

c) Walk in the Spirit and Avoid Carnality
Galatians 5:16 instructs believers to walk in the Spirit to overcome fleshly desires that hinder growth.

d) Surround Yourself with Mature Believers
Proverbs 27:17 says iron sharpens iron; fellowship with spiritually mature believers helps in growth.

e) Biblical Example: Timothy (2 Timothy 2:15)
Timothy grew in maturity through the study of the Word and mentorship under Paul.

4. SIGNS OF SPIRITUAL MATURITY

A spiritually mature believer displays certain characteristics that set them apart.

a) Ability to Teach and Disciple Others
Matthew 28:19-20 commands believers to go and make disciples, a sign of maturity.

b) Exercising Spiritual Authority with Boldness
Acts 4:29-31 shows how mature believers operate in boldness and power.

c) Bearing the Fruit of the Spirit
Galatians 5:22-23 highlights love, joy, peace, and self-control as signs of maturity.

d) Endurance in Trials and Challenges
James 1:2-4 teaches that trials produce perseverance, a mark of spiritual maturity.

e) Biblical Example: Paul (Philippians 4:11-13)
Paul displayed contentment, endurance, and unwavering faith despite challenges.

5. REWARDS OF SPIRITUAL MATURITY

Growing into spiritual maturity comes with great rewards from God.

a) Greater Revelations and Deeper Understanding of God
Jeremiah 33:3 promises deeper revelations to those who seek God.

b) Authority Over Demonic Powers
Mark 16:17-18 states that signs and wonders follow those who believe and walk in maturity.

c) Divine Direction and Purpose Fulfilment
Proverbs 3:5-6 assures that God directs the paths of those who trust in Him.

d) Spiritual Stability and Inner Peace
Isaiah 26:3 says God keeps in perfect peace those whose minds are stayed on Him.

e) Biblical Example: Daniel (Daniel 6:10-28)
Daniel’s spiritual maturity enabled him to stand firm in faith and receive divine protection.

CONCLUSION

Spiritual maturity is not an option but a necessity for every believer who desires to fulfil God's purpose. Immaturity keeps believers weak and vulnerable, but growth brings strength, wisdom, and divine authority. By committing to prayer, studying God’s Word, walking in the Spirit, and seeking godly mentorship, we can overcome spiritual immaturity and become vessels of honour in God’s kingdom.
