INTRODUCTION:

The second coming of Christ is one of the most significant and anticipated events in the history of humanity. Throughout the Scriptures, believers are repeatedly reminded to be watchful, prepared, and expectant for the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. His coming will be sudden, like a thief in the night, and only those who are spiritually ready will be taken up to be with Him.

In today’s world, distractions, worldliness, and spiritual complacency have made many believers lose sight of this glorious event. Some have even begun to doubt whether Christ will return at all. However, the Bible assures us that His return is certain, and we must live every day with the consciousness that we will one day stand before Him. This sermon will provide biblical principles on how to prepare for Christ’s return, ensuring that we are found worthy when the trumpet sounds.

1. LIVING A LIFE OF HOLINESS AND PURITY

As believers, one of the greatest ways to prepare for Christ’s return is by maintaining a life of holiness and purity before God.

  • a) The Call to Holiness: The Bible commands us to be holy as God is holy (1 Peter 1:15-16). Holiness is not an option but a necessity for those who desire to see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14).
  • b) Avoiding the Pollutions of the World: The world is filled with temptations and ungodly influences that can corrupt our hearts and minds. We must guard ourselves against sin and remain undefiled (James 1:27).
  • c) Keeping a Pure Heart: Jesus declared that only the pure in heart shall see God (Matthew 5:8). Our thoughts, motives, and desires must be aligned with God’s will.
  • d) Repenting Daily: No one is perfect, but a true believer must live in daily repentance, seeking forgiveness whenever they fall short (1 John 1:9).
  • e) Biblical Example: The five wise virgins in Matthew 25:1-13 were prepared with extra oil, representing holiness and readiness, while the foolish virgins were unprepared and missed the bridegroom.

2. DEVELOPING A STRONG PRAYER LIFE

Prayer is a powerful tool that keeps us spiritually alert and in tune with God’s plans. Jesus repeatedly instructed His disciples to watch and pray.

  • a) Prayer Keeps Us Spiritually Alert: Jesus warned in Matthew 26:41 that we must watch and pray so that we do not fall into temptation. Prayer strengthens our spirit and keeps us focused on God.
  • b) Praying for Strength to Overcome Trials: In the last days, many will face trials and tribulations. Through prayer, we receive divine strength to endure and stand firm (Luke 21:36).
  • c) Interceding for the Salvation of Others: We must pray for unbelievers, so they, too, can be prepared for Christ’s return (1 Timothy 2:1-4).
  • d) Praying for the Grace to Remain Faithful: Many have started the Christian race but have backslidden. Prayer keeps us on the right path till the end (Philippians 1:6).
  • e) Biblical Example: Jesus often withdrew to pray, especially before major events in His life (Luke 5:16). His prayer life kept Him connected to the Father and prepared Him for His mission.

3. STUDYING AND OBEYING GOD’S WORD

The Word of God is our spiritual guide, equipping us with knowledge and understanding on how to live righteously in preparation for Christ’s return.

  • a) The Word Purifies and Transforms Us: Jesus said, “Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth” (John 17:17). Studying the Word cleanses our hearts and prepares us for His coming.
  • b) Knowing the Signs of His Return: The Bible contains clear prophecies and signs concerning the end times. Studying these scriptures helps us stay watchful (Matthew 24:3-14).
  • c) Living in Obedience to God’s Word: It is not enough to read the Bible; we must obey its instructions. Obedience is a sign of true discipleship (James 1:22-25).
  • d) Meditating on God’s Promises: The Bible contains numerous promises about Christ’s return and the rewards awaiting the faithful (Revelation 22:12).
  • e) Biblical Example: The Berean Christians diligently studied the Scriptures daily to confirm the truth (Acts 17:11). Their dedication to God’s Word kept them spiritually prepared.

4. AVOIDING SPIRITUAL COMPLACENCY AND DISTRACTIONS

Many believers today have become spiritually lukewarm, allowing worldly distractions to take their focus away from Christ.

  • a) Overcoming Lukewarmness: Jesus warned the church in Laodicea about being neither hot nor cold (Revelation 3:15-16). A lukewarm Christian is in danger of missing the rapture.
  • b) Avoiding Worldly Entanglements: We must be careful not to be consumed by materialism, entertainment, and the cares of life that can dull our spiritual sensitivity (Luke 21:34).
  • c) Keeping Our Focus on Eternal Things: Instead of chasing after temporary things, we must seek first the kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33).
  • d) Staying in Fellowship with Other Believers: Surrounding ourselves with fellow believers helps us remain spiritually strong and encouraged (Hebrews 10:25).
  • e) Biblical Example: Demas, one of Paul’s companions, abandoned the faith because he loved the world (2 Timothy 4:10). His distraction cost him his place in ministry.

5. EVANGELISING AND WINNING SOULS FOR CHRIST

One of the greatest ways to prepare for Christ’s return is by fulfilling the Great Commission—spreading the gospel and leading others to salvation.

  • a) The Command to Preach the Gospel: Jesus commanded us to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19-20). Winning souls is a major part of our preparation for His return.
  • b) The Urgency of Evangelism: Many people are still living in sin, unaware of Christ’s return. We must reach them before it is too late (2 Corinthians 6:2).
  • c) Sharing Our Testimonies: Personal testimonies of God’s goodness can inspire others to come to Christ (Revelation 12:11).
  • d) Using Every Platform to Spread the Gospel: Whether through preaching, social media, or personal conversations, we must seize every opportunity to share Christ.
  • e) Biblical Example: The early apostles were passionate about evangelism, spreading the gospel despite persecution (Acts 5:42). Their zeal helped prepare many for Christ’s return.

CONCLUSION:

The return of Christ is a reality that every believer must prepare for. The signs of His coming are evident, and we cannot afford to be unprepared. By living in holiness, maintaining a strong prayer life, studying God’s Word, avoiding distractions, and actively evangelising, we ensure that we are ready when the trumpet sounds. Let us examine our lives and make every effort to be found worthy before the Lord.
