INTRODUCTION
One of the greatest marks of true Christianity is love expressed through good works. The Bible instructs us to do good to all, but especially to those who are of the household of faith. This means that as believers, we must prioritise showing kindness, generosity, and support to fellow Christians.
In a world where self-centeredness is increasing, the church is called to be a community of love, where believers care for one another as members of the same spiritual family. Doing good to the household of faith is not just a suggestion; it is a divine command that reflects the heart of God. This sermon explores what it means to do good to the household of faith, why it is important, and how we can practice it in our daily lives.
1. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO DO GOOD TO THE HOUSEHOLD OF FAITH?
Doing good to the household of faith means showing love, kindness, and generosity to fellow believers.
a) Providing for the Needs of Fellow Believers
God expects us to help those in need within the church, just as the early believers did (Acts 4:34-35).
b) Encouraging One Another in Difficult Times
We should be a source of strength to one another through words and actions (1 Thessalonians 5:11).
c) Praying for and Supporting One Another Spiritually
Interceding for fellow believers strengthens the body of Christ (James 5:16).
d) Serving Others with Our Gifts and Resources
Each believer has a role to play in blessing others with their talents and possessions (1 Peter 4:10).
e) Biblical Example: The church in Jerusalem (Acts 2:44-47) shared their resources so that no one lacked anything.
2. WHY SHOULD WE DO GOOD TO THE HOUSEHOLD OF FAITH?
There are biblical reasons why we must prioritise doing good to fellow believers.
a) It Is a Command from God
The Bible commands us to love one another as Christ has loved us (John 13:34-35).
b) It Strengthens the Unity of the Church
When we care for one another, the church becomes a strong and united family (Colossians 3:12-14).
c) It Is a Testimony to the World
Our love and kindness towards one another demonstrate the reality of Christ in us (John 17:21).
d) It Attracts God’s Blessings
God rewards those who care for His people and meet their needs (Proverbs 19:17).
e) Biblical Example: The Macedonian churches (2 Corinthians 8:1-5) gave generously to support fellow believers despite their own poverty.
3. HOW CAN WE PRACTICE DOING GOOD TO THE HOUSEHOLD OF FAITH?
Practical ways to show kindness and love to fellow believers include:
a) Giving Financial and Material Support
Supporting those who are struggling financially or in need of food and shelter is a way to show God’s love (James 2:15-16).
b) Visiting and Caring for the Sick and Needy
Ministering to the sick, widows, orphans, and those going through hardships is a Christlike act (Matthew 25:35-40).
c) Showing Hospitality to Fellow Believers
Opening our homes and hearts to others strengthens fellowship and love (Romans 12:13).
d) Speaking Words of Encouragement and Hope
A kind word can uplift and restore someone who is going through trials (Proverbs 12:25).
e) Biblical Example: The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30-37) showed kindness to a stranger, demonstrating how we should care for one another.
4. THE CONSEQUENCES OF NEGLECTING THE HOUSEHOLD OF FAITH
When we fail to care for fellow believers, we open doors to negative consequences.
a) It Weakens the Body of Christ
Neglecting fellow believers creates division and weakens the church’s unity (1 Corinthians 12:25-26).
b) It Contradicts the Gospel Message
A believer who refuses to help others does not reflect the love of Christ (1 John 3:17-18).
c) It Leads to the Suffering of Many Believers
When the church fails to support its members, many suffer needlessly (James 2:15-16).
d) It Hinders the Spread of the Gospel
A church that lacks love and unity struggles to fulfil its mission effectively (John 17:23).
e) Biblical Example: The rich man (Luke 16:19-31) ignored the poor man, Lazarus, and suffered eternal consequences.
5. THE REWARDS OF DOING GOOD TO THE HOUSEHOLD OF FAITH
God promises great blessings to those who care for His people.
a) It Brings Divine Favour and Prosperity
God blesses those who give generously to others (Proverbs 11:25).
b) It Leads to Spiritual Growth and Strength
A caring believer experiences deeper spiritual fulfilment (Hebrews 13:16).
c) It Creates a Loving and Supportive Church Community
When believers care for one another, the church thrives and grows (Acts 2:42-47).
d) It Stores Up Eternal Rewards in Heaven
God remembers and rewards every act of kindness done for His people (Matthew 25:34-40).
e) Biblical Example: Cornelius (Acts 10:1-4) received divine visitation because of his generosity towards God’s people.
CONCLUSION
Doing good to the household of faith is not just an act of kindness but a divine responsibility. As members of God’s family, we must be intentional in caring for, encouraging, and supporting one another. This is the true demonstration of Christ’s love and the mark of a healthy, thriving church.
May we always seek opportunities to bless and strengthen one another, knowing that in doing so, we honour God and advance His kingdom.
