WHEN A TRIBE GOES ASTRAY
By Rev. Samuel Arimoro
Main Text: Judges 18
The tribe of Dan stole idols and set up their own shrine (Judges 18:30–31).
Lesson: A whole tribe can be led astray when leadership is corrupted.
INTRODUCTION:
The story of the tribe of Dan in Judges 18 is a sobering reminder of how easily an entire community can be pulled away from God’s covenant when wrong leadership, greed, and compromise take root. Instead of seeking the Lord’s direction for their inheritance, the Danites chose the path of convenience and disobedience. They not only abandoned God’s plan, but also embraced idolatry by stealing graven images and setting up their own shrine.
This incident shows us that sin is never an isolated matter. The corruption of a few leaders can spread like wildfire until it affects an entire tribe, a whole nation, or even a whole generation. The tribe of Dan serves as a warning that spiritual decline is often collective when the fear of God is replaced with human ambition and idolatry.
For us today, the lesson is clear: we must be vigilant in maintaining sound leadership, biblical values, and spiritual integrity. Otherwise, even a whole family, a church, or a nation can stray from God’s ways.
1. THE POWER OF LEADERSHIP INFLUENCE
When leaders go astray, those under them are in danger of following the same path.
a) Leaders shape the direction of a people (Proverbs 29:2).
When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people mourn. The Danites followed their corrupt leaders into idolatry.
b) People often imitate the character of their leaders (Luke 6:40).
Just as disciples reflect their teachers, entire tribes reflect the morals of their rulers.
c) Wrong leadership produces generational consequences (2 Kings 17:21-23).
Israel’s kings led the nation into sin, resulting in their captivity. Dan’s error echoed for generations.
d) True leadership must uphold God’s Word (Joshua 1:8).
Without grounding in God’s law, leadership becomes a tool of destruction rather than guidance.
Biblical Example: Jeroboam, king of Israel, made two golden calves and caused all Israel to sin (1 Kings 12:28-30).
2. THE DANGER OF IDOLATRY
The tribe of Dan turned from God to worship man-made images.
a) Idolatry replaces God with lesser things (Exodus 20:3-5).
It dishonours the Creator by giving His glory to images.
b) Idolatry enslaves rather than liberates (Psalm 115:4-8).
Those who make idols become like them—spiritually blind and powerless.
c) Idolatry brings divine judgment (Deuteronomy 11:16-17).
God warned Israel that turning to idols would provoke His anger and bring destruction.
d) True worship belongs only to the living God (John 4:23-24).
God desires worship in spirit and in truth, not rituals of deception.
Biblical Example: The Israelites at Mount Sinai worshipped the golden calf and faced God’s wrath (Exodus 32:1-28).
3. THE CONSEQUENCES OF STRAYING FROM GOD
The tribe of Dan suffered spiritually by abandoning God’s plan.
a) Loss of divine presence (Judges 2:20-23).
God withdrew His power when His people forsook Him.
b) Vulnerability to enemies (Deuteronomy 28:25).
Without God’s protection, a tribe or nation becomes easy prey.
c) Corruption of identity and purpose (Isaiah 1:2-4).
Dan was called to possess a land given by God, but they chose compromise instead.
d) Eternal regret (Judges 18:30-31).
Instead of honour, the tribe of Dan became a symbol of rebellion and idolatry.
Biblical Example: King Saul lost his kingdom when he strayed from God’s commands (1 Samuel 15:22-28).
4. LESSONS FOR THE CHURCH TODAY
The story of Dan carries urgent lessons for believers and the church.
a) Guard against corrupt leadership (Acts 20:28-30).
Wolves in sheep’s clothing can destroy the flock if not resisted.
b) Stay rooted in the Word of God (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
Scripture is the anchor that keeps us from drifting into error.
c) True worship must be centred on Christ (Colossians 3:16-17).
Christ is the only mediator between God and man—not idols or human traditions.
d) Collective responsibility matters (Joshua 24:15).
Each family, church, and nation must choose whom they will serve.
Biblical Example: The Bereans examined the Scriptures daily to confirm the truth and stayed faithful (Acts 17:11).
5. THE CALL TO RETURN TO GOD
Even when a tribe, family, or nation goes astray, God calls for repentance and restoration.
a) God desires repentance rather than destruction (Ezekiel 18:30-32).
He takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked.
b) Revival begins with turning back to God (2 Chronicles 7:14).
Humility, prayer, and repentance bring healing.
c) God restores those who genuinely repent (Joel 2:12-13).
His mercy is greater than our failure.
d) Salvation is found only in Christ (John 14:6).
Jesus alone can redeem tribes, families, and nations.
Biblical Example: Nineveh repented at Jonah’s preaching, and God spared the city (Jonah 3:5-10).
CONCLUSION:
The tribe of Dan stands as a warning for all generations. When leadership is corrupted and idolatry is embraced, an entire community can drift away from God. Yet, God still calls us to return to Him with sincerity and obedience. As the church, we must guard against false leadership, avoid idols of modern times, and remain steadfast in the worship of the true and living God.
