Description: God delights in honouring His children publicly, even in the face of their enemies, proving His sovereignty and faithfulness.
INTRODUCTION:
One of the most comforting truths of Scripture is that God does not wait until our enemies are gone before He blesses us. Instead, He chooses to set a table before them, turning their expectations of our downfall into a display of His goodness and faithfulness. To “set a table” is to provide abundantly, to honour, and to elevate in a way that cannot be hidden.
This is a revelation of divine boldness. God does not need to remove enemies to showcase His glory. He prepares His children for celebration right in front of those who wished them evil. This act reveals His sovereignty and shows that no enemy has the power to stop His plan.
As believers, we must learn to rest in this truth. Even in the midst of battles, we can eat at God’s table with peace, joy, and confidence. The God who sets a table before enemies is a God of defence, honour, abundance, and vindication.
1. GOD DEFENDS HIS CHILDREN AGAINST ENEMIES
God’s people are never left helpless before their adversaries, for He Himself rises to defend them.
a) God fights for His people (Exodus 14:13-14)
The Lord Himself assures us that He will fight while we hold our peace.
b) God frustrates the weapons of the wicked (Isaiah 54:17)
No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue shall be condemned.
c) God reveals His power through opposition (2 Chronicles 20:15)
The battle belongs to Him, not to us.
d) God turns enemies into powerless spectators (Psalm 27:2)
They stumble and fall when they rise against the righteous.
Biblical Example: At the Red Sea, Pharaoh and his army pursued Israel, but God defended His children by parting the sea, then destroyed their enemies in the waters (Exodus 14:21-28).
2. GOD HONOURS HIS CHILDREN PUBLICLY
The table symbolises honour and vindication granted in full view of adversaries.
a) God exalts the humble in due season (1 Peter 5:6)
Promotion comes not from men but from God.
b) God vindicates His children before their enemies (Psalm 92:11)
He causes His people to witness the defeat of their adversaries.
c) God’s blessings cannot be hidden (Matthew 5:14-16)
His glory upon His children shines openly before all men.
d) God’s honour cannot be reversed (Numbers 23:20)
Whatever He blesses cannot be cursed.
Biblical Example: Mordecai was honoured before Haman. The man who plotted his downfall was made to announce his exaltation publicly (Esther 6:10-11).
3. GOD PROVIDES ABUNDANCE IN THE MIDST OF OPPOSITION
The table is not ordinary provision; it is abundance, sufficiency, and overflowing blessings.
a) God supplies every need in spite of adversaries (Philippians 4:19)
His riches in glory are inexhaustible.
b) God sustains His children in times of famine (Psalm 37:19)
The righteous are not forsaken in the days of scarcity.
c) God does exceedingly beyond our expectations (Ephesians 3:20)
His provision always surpasses human imagination.
d) God uses His blessings to silence adversaries (Psalm 34:5)
Those who look to Him are radiant and never ashamed.
Biblical Example: Elijah was fed during famine. While others lacked, God sent ravens to feed him and later provided through a widow (1 Kings 17:6, 15-16).
4. GOD MAKES ENEMIES WITNESSES OF YOUR RISING
God’s greatness is displayed when those who oppose you are forced to witness your elevation.
a) God showcases His glory through enemies (Romans 9:17)
Pharaoh’s resistance only magnified God’s power.
b) God positions blessings in the presence of adversaries (Psalm 23:5)
The banquet is set before those who opposed you.
c) God ensures no enemy can stop His plan (Romans 8:31)
If God is for us, who can be against us?
d) God preserves enemies alive to witness His wonders (Psalm 118:23)
What He does becomes marvellous in the eyes of all.
Biblical Example: Daniel’s enemies conspired against him, but when he was delivered from the lions, they were forced to see his vindication while they themselves perished (Daniel 6:22-24).
