THE DANGER OF PLAYING WITH SIN

THE DANGER OF PLAYING WITH SIN

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Judges 16:18-21

Supporting Texts: Romans 6:23, James 1:14-15, Proverbs 6:27-28, Galatians 6:7-8, 1 Peter 5:8

INTRODUCTION:
Sin is a deadly poison that often presents itself as harmless pleasure. The story of Samson reminds us that no matter how gifted or anointed a person may be, sin has the power to strip them of their strength, dignity, and destiny. Sin does not destroy in one day; it works gradually, luring the victim into complacency until destruction is complete.

The Bible makes it clear that “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). Death here is not only physical but also spiritual, emotional, and eternal. Playing with sin is like playing with fire—it eventually burns. Just as Samson toyed with Delilah until he lost his strength, his sight, and his freedom, anyone who continues in sin will end up in bondage and shame.

This message is a warning to all believers: we cannot afford to take sin lightly. To play with sin is to invite destruction.

1. SIN IS DECEPTIVE

a) Sin disguises itself as pleasure (Hebrews 11:25)
Sin often appears enjoyable at the beginning but leads to sorrow.

b) Sin blinds people from the truth (2 Corinthians 4:4)
It prevents people from seeing the consequences ahead.

c) Sin makes promises it cannot keep (Proverbs 14:12)
It offers satisfaction but delivers emptiness.

d) Sin creates false confidence (1 Corinthians 10:12)
Many think they can control it until it destroys them.

Biblical Example: Eve was deceived by the serpent, thinking the fruit would make her wise, but it led to the fall of man (Genesis 3:1-6).

2. SIN ENSLAVES

a) Sin leads to bondage (John 8:34)
Whoever commits sin becomes a servant of sin.

b) Sin weakens spiritual strength (Judges 16:20)
Samson did not know the Lord had departed from him.

c) Sin robs a person of joy and peace (Psalm 51:12)
David lost his joy after falling into sin.

d) Sin destroys spiritual authority (Acts 19:15-16)
The sons of Sceva discovered they had no authority over demons.

Biblical Example: Samson became a prisoner of the Philistines after yielding to sin (Judges 16:21).

3. SIN BRINGS SHAME AND DESTRUCTION

a) Sin exposes nakedness (Genesis 3:7)
Adam and Eve were ashamed after disobeying God.

b) Sin damages reputation (Proverbs 6:33)
A wound and dishonour will be the portion of the sinner.

c) Sin destroys destiny (Romans 6:23)
The end of sin is always death.

d) Sin brings eternal separation from God (Isaiah 59:2)
It builds a wall between man and God.

Biblical Example: Judas Iscariot ended his life in shame after betraying Jesus (Matthew 27:3-5).

4. SIN MAKES A PERSON VULNERABLE TO THE ENEMY

a) Sin breaks divine protection (Ecclesiastes 10:8)
Whoever breaks the hedge, the serpent will bite.

b) Sin gives Satan a foothold (Ephesians 4:27)
It opens the door for the enemy to attack.

c) Sin removes divine covering (Psalm 91:1)
Only those abiding in God’s presence are safe.

d) Sin turns blessings into curses (Deuteronomy 28:15)
Disobedience opens the door for afflictions.

Biblical Example: King Saul lost God’s covering after disobeying His command, and an evil spirit tormented him (1 Samuel 16:14).

5. VICTORY OVER SIN IS POSSIBLE IN CHRIST

a) Jesus came to save from sin (Matthew 1:21)
He delivers us from the power and penalty of sin.

b) The blood of Jesus cleanses sin (1 John 1:7)
There is forgiveness in Christ.

c) The Holy Spirit empowers believers (Galatians 5:16)
Walking in the Spirit helps overcome sinful desires.

d) The Word of God keeps us from sin (Psalm 119:11)
Hiding the Word in our hearts prevents falling.

Biblical Example: The woman caught in adultery was forgiven and instructed by Jesus to “go and sin no more” (John 8:10–11).

CONCLUSION:
Sin is dangerous and destructive. To play with it is to endanger one’s destiny, peace, and eternity. We must flee from sin, resist the devil, and live holy lives through the help of Jesus Christ. The same God who restored Samson at the end is able to restore anyone who repents sincerely.
