MISGUIDED SOLUTIONS

MISGUIDED SOLUTIONS

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Judges 21:1-23

Lesson: Human solutions without God’s direction can create more problems.

INTRODUCTION:
The account in Judges 21 reveals a tragic episode in the history of Israel. After the civil war against the tribe of Benjamin, the nation faced the painful reality that one of their tribes was almost extinct. In their attempt to correct the problem, they devised human solutions that only created more complications. Instead of seeking God’s wisdom fully, they relied on their own reasoning, which resulted in morally questionable and spiritually destructive decisions.

This passage teaches us that when men attempt to fix spiritual or moral problems with human reasoning and strategies that exclude God, the result is often worse than the original problem. Our natural wisdom is limited, but God’s wisdom is perfect, and only His direction can produce solutions that bring healing and restoration.

1. HUMAN SOLUTIONS OFTEN SEEM WISE BUT LEAD TO DESTRUCTION

a) Limited human reasoning (Proverbs 14:12): Human wisdom may appear logical at the surface, but without divine guidance, it leads to paths of destruction. Israel thought they were fixing a problem but worsened it.

b) Short-term vision (Isaiah 55:8-9): Man sees only the immediate need, but God sees the end from the beginning. Their hasty oath and plan did not consider the long-term consequences.

c) Lack of spiritual discernment (1 Corinthians 2:14): Without God’s Spirit, decisions will be flesh-driven and bound to fail.

d) Compromise with sin (Romans 6:23): In solving problems without God, Israel embraced sinful acts like abduction and slaughter, which displeased God.

Biblical Example: Abraham and Sarah’s decision to use Hagar (Genesis 16:1-4). What seemed like a human solution to barrenness created generational conflict.

2. THE DANGER OF MAKING OATHS AND DECISIONS WITHOUT SEEKING GOD

a) Rash vows (Ecclesiastes 5:4-6): Israel swore an oath not to give their daughters to Benjamin, but it was not directed by God, and it created greater problems.

b) The consequences of flesh-driven promises (Matthew 5:37): Jesus warns against binding ourselves with unnecessary oaths because they trap us in fleshly commitments.

c) Binding the future with unwise decisions (Judges 11:30-35): Just like Jephthah’s rash vow brought sorrow, Israel’s vow became a snare.

d) God desires obedience, not rash promises (1 Samuel 15:22): Obedience to God’s voice is better than making impulsive declarations.

Biblical Example: Herod’s rash oath led to the beheading of John the Baptist (Mark 6:23-28).

3. COMPROMISE PRODUCES MORE SIN, NOT RESTORATION

a) Carnal fixes breed carnality (Romans 8:6-8): Israel solved one problem by creating another, showing how fleshly decisions never produce godly fruit.

b) Sinful methods cannot achieve righteous results (James 1:20): Kidnapping and slaughtering in Shiloh was not a holy solution but a carnal act.

c) Wrong means pollute right intentions (Romans 3:8): Even if the goal looks noble, sinful methods dishonour God.

d) God’s glory is lost when compromise is embraced (Judges 21:25): Everyone did what was right in their eyes, and God’s presence was absent.

Biblical Example: Saul sparing the Amalekites and their spoil (1 Samuel 15:9-23). His compromise brought rejection from God.

4. GOD’S WISDOM IS THE TRUE SOLUTION TO EVERY PROBLEM

a) Divine wisdom is available (James 1:5): God promises to give wisdom to those who ask, unlike Israel who leaned on their own thoughts.

b) God’s way brings peace (Philippians 4:6-7): When we seek Him, He grants solutions that bring lasting peace, not further crisis.

c) God’s wisdom is pure and peaceable (James 3:17): Unlike human solutions, His way never promotes sin.

d) God’s direction preserves generations (Psalm 32:8): Israel nearly lost Benjamin forever, but God’s way preserves life and legacy.

Biblical Example: Solomon asking for wisdom to govern Israel (1 Kings 3:9-12). God’s wisdom brought stability and prosperity to the nation.

5. LESSONS FOR THE CHURCH AND BELIEVERS TODAY

a) Do not lean on your own understanding (Proverbs 3:5-6): Trust in God for solutions, not in self-wisdom.

b) Always seek divine counsel before acting (Psalm 37:5): Commit your way to the Lord and He will guide you.

c) Beware of human traditions that replace God’s word (Mark 7:13): Human traditions often complicate instead of solving problems.

d) God’s way is always higher and better (Isaiah 55:9): What seems foolish to man is God’s power unto salvation.

Biblical Example: The early church in Acts sought God’s wisdom through prayer before choosing leaders (Acts 1:24-26).

CONCLUSION:
The story of Israel in Judges 21 is a timeless warning that human wisdom without God’s direction creates chaos. Their attempt to preserve the tribe of Benjamin only multiplied sin and sorrow. In our lives, families, and churches, we must never attempt to fix problems with our own reasoning while sidelining God. The safest path is always to seek God’s wisdom and direction, for only His solutions are pure, lasting, and life-giving.
