Description: This study examines how Jesus responded to the various traps set for Him by the Pharisees, Sadducees, and religious leaders. It teaches believers how to rely on divine wisdom when facing difficult questions, opposition, criticism, and attempts to entangle them.
INTRODUCTION
Matthew 22 presents a series of confrontations between Jesus and the religious leaders of His day. Unable to discredit Him through His teachings and miracles, the Pharisees, Herodians, and Sadducees attempted to trap Him with difficult and controversial questions.
They questioned Him about paying taxes to Caesar, challenged Him concerning the resurrection, and tested Him regarding the greatest commandment. Their intention was not to learn but to find grounds to accuse Him.
Yet in every situation, Jesus responded with divine wisdom, exposing their motives while revealing God's truth. His answers were neither careless nor defensive. He spoke with clarity, discernment, and authority, leaving His opponents astonished and unable to trap Him.
Believers today also face situations where people may challenge their faith, misrepresent their words, provoke arguments, or ask questions designed to create confusion. The example of Jesus teaches us how to respond wisely, graciously, and truthfully.
1. WISDOM DISCERNS THE MOTIVES BEHIND QUESTIONS
Godly wisdom sees beyond words into the heart.
a) Jesus recognised the wicked intentions of His questioners (Matthew 22:18)
He understood that their questions were designed to trap Him rather than seek truth.
b) Spiritual discernment helps believers identify hidden motives (Hebrews 5:14)
Maturity enables us to distinguish between sincerity and deception.
c) Not every question is asked with a genuine desire to learn (Proverbs 26:24-26)
Some questions are intended to provoke, distract, or accuse.
d) The Holy Spirit gives insight into situations beyond human understanding (John 16:13)
God provides wisdom to recognise what is truly happening.
Biblical Example: Nehemiah discerned the deceptive intentions of his enemies when they invited him to meet in order to harm him (Nehemiah 6:1-4).
2. WISDOM RESPONDS RATHER THAN REACTS
Godly people exercise self-control before speaking.
a) Jesus remained calm under pressure (Matthew 22:18-21)
He did not allow Himself to be controlled by emotions or provocation.
b) Wisdom carefully considers words before speaking (Proverbs 15:28)
Thoughtful responses prevent unnecessary conflict.
c) Anger often leads to poor decisions and careless speech (James 1:19-20)
Patience allows wisdom to guide our actions.
d) A gentle answer can disarm hostility and tension (Proverbs 15:1)
Wisdom seeks solutions rather than escalation.
Biblical Example: Gideon wisely answered the Ephraimites when they criticised him, preventing a serious conflict within Israel (Judges 8:1-3).
3. WISDOM RELIES UPON GOD'S TRUTH
The Word of God provides the best answers.
a) Jesus frequently used Scripture to answer challenges (Matthew 22:31-32)
God's Word became the foundation of His responses.
b) Truth exposes error and confusion (John 17:17)
Scripture provides clarity in difficult situations.
c) Believers must know God's Word to answer wisely (2 Timothy 2:15)
Spiritual preparation strengthens confidence and effectiveness.
d) Divine wisdom aligns with God's revealed truth (Psalm 119:105)
The Bible guides believers through complex circumstances.
Biblical Example: When tempted by Satan, Jesus consistently answered with Scripture, overcoming every attack (Matthew 4:1-11).
4. WISDOM SEEKS GOD'S GLORY ABOVE PERSONAL VICTORY
The goal is not merely to win arguments but to honour God.
a) Jesus used every encounter to reveal spiritual truth (Matthew 22:37-40)
He focused on God's purposes rather than personal vindication.
b) Believers should speak with grace and wisdom (Colossians 4:6)
Our words should point people toward God.
c) Wisdom seeks to build up rather than tear down (Ephesians 4:29)
Responses should edify and encourage where possible.
d) God's glory should remain the ultimate objective (1 Corinthians 10:31)
Every conversation becomes an opportunity to honour Him.
Biblical Example: Stephen answered his accusers with wisdom and truth, glorifying God even in the face of persecution (Acts 7:1-60).
CONCLUSION
The encounters recorded in Matthew 22 reveal the extraordinary wisdom of Jesus Christ. Though repeatedly challenged by religious leaders seeking to trap Him, He answered every question with discernment, truth, and grace.
Believers today face similar challenges in conversations, workplaces, ministries, families, and society. By following Christ's example, we can learn to discern motives, control our responses, rely upon God's Word, and seek His glory in every situation.
Divine wisdom protects believers from deception, preserves peace, and enables them to represent Christ effectively in a complex world.
