Description: Spiritual pride is a dangerous condition that exalts self above God and others, leading to deception, hypocrisy, and eventual downfall.

INTRODUCTION

Matthew 23 contains one of the strongest rebukes delivered by Jesus during His earthly ministry. In this chapter, Jesus addressed the scribes and Pharisees, who were regarded as the most religious people of their time. They possessed extensive knowledge of the Law, occupied positions of influence, and were respected by the people. However, beneath their religious appearance was a dangerous spirit of pride that had corrupted their relationship with God and distorted their ministry to others.

Spiritual pride is one of the most subtle sins because it often disguises itself as spirituality. A person may become proud of his knowledge of Scripture, prayer life, ministry position, gifts, holiness, achievements, or years of service in the church. Unlike obvious sins that are easily recognized, spiritual pride often hides behind religious activities and self-righteous attitudes. It causes people to depend on themselves rather than on God's grace.

Jesus repeatedly warned against pride because it blinds people to their true spiritual condition. The Pharisees believed they were righteous, yet they rejected the very Messiah they claimed to serve. Their example serves as a warning to every believer, leader, and minister today. God desires humility, brokenness, and dependence upon Him. As we examine Matthew 23, we will discover the dangers of spiritual pride and the pathway to genuine humility before God.

1. SPIRITUAL PRIDE SEEKS THE PRAISE OF MEN

One of the clearest signs of spiritual pride is the desire to be noticed, admired, and applauded by people rather than seeking God's approval.

a) Performing Religious Acts for Recognition (Matthew 23:5)
The Pharisees enlarged their phylacteries and broadened the borders of their garments to appear more spiritual than others. Spiritual pride seeks attention rather than God's glory.

b) Loving Positions of Honour (Matthew 23:6)
They desired the chief seats at feasts and prominent places in public gatherings. Pride craves status and recognition.

c) Seeking Public Titles and Distinction (Matthew 23:7)
The Pharisees enjoyed being publicly acknowledged and celebrated. Believers must find their identity in Christ rather than human applause.

d) Valuing Reputation Above Character (John 12:43)
Many seek the praise of men more than the praise of God. True spirituality prioritizes God's approval over public opinion.

Biblical Example: King Saul became more concerned about maintaining his image before the people than obeying God's command (1 Samuel 15:24–30).

2. SPIRITUAL PRIDE PRODUCES HYPOCRISY

Pride often causes people to focus on appearance while neglecting genuine inward transformation.

a) Teaching Without Obedience (Matthew 23:3)

The Pharisees instructed others but failed to obey their own teachings. Spiritual authority loses credibility when it lacks personal obedience.

b) Demanding What One Will Not Practise (Matthew 23:4)
They imposed burdens on others but refused to carry them themselves. Pride expects more from others than from itself.

c) Maintaining an Outward Image (Matthew 23:27-28)
Jesus compared them to whitewashed tombs that looked beautiful externally but were filled with corruption internally.

d) Concealing Inner Problems (Psalm 51:6)
God desires truth in the inward parts. Spiritual pride hides weakness instead of bringing it before God for healing.

Biblical Example: Ananias and Sapphira attempted to appear more spiritual and generous than they actually were (Acts 5:1-11).

3. SPIRITUAL PRIDE REJECTS GOD'S CORRECTION
A proud heart finds it difficult to receive rebuke, instruction, and correction.

a) Refusing to Listen to Truth (Matthew 23:29-32)

The religious leaders honoured dead prophets while rejecting the living truth standing before them.

b) Trusting in Personal Righteousness (Luke 18:9-12)
Pride convinces people that they have no need for repentance or improvement.

c) Resisting Conviction (Acts 7:51)
A proud person often hardens his heart when the Holy Spirit exposes sin.

d) Rejecting Wise Counsel (Proverbs 12:15)
Pride prevents growth because it assumes it already knows everything.

Biblical Example: Pharaoh repeatedly hardened his heart against God's warnings and ultimately suffered devastating judgment (Exodus 5-14).

4. SPIRITUAL PRIDE HINDERS GOD'S WORK

Spiritual pride not only damages the individual but also negatively affects others.

a) Becoming a Stumbling Block (Matthew 23:13)
The Pharisees hindered people from entering God's kingdom through their false example and teachings.

b) Distorting God's Truth (Matthew 23:16-22)
Pride manipulates truth to preserve personal interests rather than honour God.

c) Neglecting What Matters Most (Matthew 23:23)
They focused on minor issues while ignoring justice, mercy, and faithfulness.

d) Misrepresenting God's Character (Romans 2:24)
Proud religious behaviour causes unbelievers to misunderstand God's nature and reject the gospel.

Biblical Example: The elder brother in the parable of the prodigal son allowed pride to rob him of joy, compassion, and fellowship (Luke 15:25-32).

5. HUMILITY IS THE CURE FOR SPIRITUAL PRIDE

Jesus taught that humility is the pathway to true greatness and spiritual usefulness.

a) Recognise Your Dependence on God (John 15:5)
Without Christ, we can do nothing. Humility acknowledges God's grace as the source of every blessing.

b) Embrace Servanthood (Matthew 23:11)
The greatest in God's kingdom is the servant of all. Humility expresses itself through service.

c) Submit to God's Grace (James 4:6)
God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humility attracts divine assistance.

d) Exalt Christ Above Yourself (Philippians 2:5-11)
The life of Jesus demonstrates perfect humility. Believers are called to follow His example.

Biblical Example: John the Baptist demonstrated humility when he declared, “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30).

CONCLUSION

Spiritual pride is one of the most dangerous enemies of the Christian life because it often goes unnoticed. It deceives people into believing they are spiritually mature while their hearts drift away from God. The Pharisees were respected by men but rebuked by Christ because they allowed pride to replace humility, appearance to replace reality, and self-exaltation to replace genuine devotion.

Every believer must guard against spiritual pride by maintaining a humble and teachable spirit before God. We must continually examine our motives, welcome God's correction, and depend upon His grace. As we walk in humility, God will exalt us in His time, use us for His glory, and preserve us from the downfall that inevitably follows pride.
