GUARDING YOUR HEART

GUARDING YOUR HEART

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: 1 Corinthians 10:14

Key Verse: “Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.”1 Corinthians 10:14 (KJV)

Supporting Texts: Proverbs 4:23; Matthew 15:18-19; Psalm 119:11; Philippians 4:8; James 1:14-15; 1 John 5:21

Description: Guarding the heart means deliberately protecting our thoughts, desires, affections, convictions, and spiritual devotion from anything that can draw us away from God. Since idolatry begins in the heart before it appears in behaviour, believers must watch carefully over their inner life.

INTRODUCTION

The heart is central to the spiritual life of a person. What we think about, desire, love, fear, and value eventually influences our words and actions. Proverbs 4:23 therefore gives the solemn instruction: “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” A careless heart can become an entrance point for temptation, compromise, bitterness, pride, and idolatry.

Paul's warning in 1 Corinthians 10:14 comes after reminding believers of Israel's failures. The Israelites witnessed God's mighty works but allowed their hearts to turn towards idols. Their outward actions were preceded by inward desires. Paul therefore tells Christians not merely to tolerate or manage idolatry, but to flee from it.

Guarding the heart requires intentional spiritual discipline. We must monitor what enters our minds, what occupies our affections, whom we allow to influence us, and what we value above God. A guarded heart becomes a strong foundation for a faithful Christian life.

1. UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF YOUR HEART

The condition of the heart influences the whole life.

a) The Heart Determines Life's Direction (Proverbs 4:23)
Our inner condition eventually influences our outward conduct.

b) God Looks At The Heart (1 Samuel 16:7)
God sees beyond outward appearances and examines our motives.

c) The Heart Can Be Deceptive (Jeremiah 17:9)
We must not assume that every desire is trustworthy.

d) God Desires A Clean Heart (Psalm 51:10)
Spiritual renewal begins within.

Biblical Example: David's outward success could not hide his inward failure when he allowed sinful desire to develop into adultery and murder (2 Samuel 11).

2. GUARD YOUR HEART AGAINST IDOLATRY

Idolatry begins when something takes God's rightful place.

a) Flee Idolatry (1 Corinthians 10:14)
Paul commands immediate separation from anything that competes with God.

b) Worship God Alone (Exodus 20:3)
God deserves exclusive devotion.

c) Examine Your Affections (Matthew 6:21)
What we treasure reveals the direction of our hearts.

d) Keep Yourself From Idols (1 John 5:21)
John's warning remains relevant to every believer.

Biblical Example: Israel's heart turned towards the golden calf despite having experienced God's miraculous deliverance (Exodus 32:1-6).

3. GUARD WHAT ENTERS YOUR HEART

What we repeatedly expose ourselves to can shape our inner life.

a) Guard Your Eyes (Psalm 101:3)
What we continually look at can influence our desires.

b) Guard Your Ears (Mark 4:24)
What we listen to can shape our beliefs and attitudes.

c) Choose Godly Influences (1 Corinthians 15:33)
Wrong associations can corrupt good character.

d) Meditate On Good Things (Philippians 4:8)
We should deliberately fill our minds with things that honour God.

Biblical Example: Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the king's provisions (Daniel 1:8).

4. CONTROL YOUR THOUGHTS

A guarded heart requires a disciplined mind.

a) Renew Your Mind (Romans 12:2)
Transformation occurs as our thinking is brought under God's truth.

b) Bring Thoughts Into Captivity (2 Corinthians 10:5)
Not every thought deserves acceptance.

c) Think On Pure Things (Philippians 4:8)
Godly thinking protects the inner life.

d) Reject Sinful Imaginations (Matthew 5:28)
Sinful actions often begin with unchecked thoughts and desires.

Biblical Example: Joseph refused to entertain the thoughts and advances of Potiphar's wife (Genesis 39:7-12).

5. GUARD YOUR DESIRES

Desires must be brought under the authority of God's Word.

a) Recognise The Danger Of Lust (James 1:14-15)
Uncontrolled desire can eventually produce sin.

b) Flee Wrong Desires (2 Timothy 2:22)
Some desires must be escaped rather than entertained.

c) Walk In The Spirit (Galatians 5:16)
The Holy Spirit enables believers to overcome fleshly desires.

d) Set Your Affection On Things Above (Colossians 3:1-2)
Heavenly priorities redirect our desires towards God.

Biblical Example: David saw Bathsheba, entertained the desire, and eventually acted upon it, demonstrating the danger of unchecked desire (2 Samuel 11:2-4).

6. FILL YOUR HEART WITH GOD'S WORD

The best defence against spiritual contamination is spiritual nourishment.

a) Hide God's Word Within You (Psalm 119:11)
Scripture strengthens us against sin.

b) Meditate On God's Word (Joshua 1:8)
Meditation allows truth to shape our decisions.

c) Let The Word Dwell Richly In You (Colossians 3:16)
A Word-filled heart is better equipped to resist deception.

d) Obey What God Says (James 1:22)
Knowledge becomes protection when it produces obedience.

Biblical Example: Jesus overcame Satan's temptations by applying the Word of God (Matthew 4:4, 7, 10).

7. PROTECT YOUR HEART FROM BITTERNESS AND PRIDE

Not every threat to the heart is an obvious temptation.

a) Forgive Others (Ephesians 4:31-32)
Bitterness can poison the inner life.

b) Reject Pride (James 4:6)
Pride can gradually push God out of the centre.

c) Keep A Teachable Spirit (Proverbs 12:1)
A humble heart receives correction.

d) Pursue Peace (Hebrews 12:14-15)
Unresolved bitterness can trouble both individuals and communities.

Biblical Example: Cain allowed anger and jealousy to dominate his heart, eventually leading him to murder his brother Abel (Genesis 4:3-8).

8. KEEP CHRIST AT THE CENTRE OF YOUR HEART

A guarded heart must remain occupied by Christ.

a) Abide In Christ (John 15:4)
Continuous fellowship with Jesus strengthens spiritual life.

b) Love God Wholeheartedly (Deuteronomy 6:5)
God desires our complete devotion.

c) Let Christ Rule In Your Heart (Colossians 3:15)
His peace and authority should govern our decisions.

d) Keep Your Eyes On Jesus (Hebrews 12:2)
Christ must remain the focus of our faith.

Biblical Example: Joshua remained committed to God and boldly declared, “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD” (Joshua 24:15).

CONCLUSION

The battle for a person's life often begins in the heart. Before idolatry becomes an outward act, it can begin as misplaced affection, excessive ambition, uncontrolled desire, pride, or dependence upon something other than God. This is why Scripture commands us to guard our hearts diligently.

Do not wait until your outward life is damaged before examining your inner life. Guard what you see, hear, think about, desire, and value. Fill your heart with God's Word, walk in the Spirit, forgive quickly, reject pride, and keep Christ at the centre. When your heart is surrendered to God, you will have greater strength to flee idolatry and remain faithful to Him.

1. Father, create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me, in Jesus name.

2. Lord, help me to guard my heart diligently against every form of sin and spiritual compromise, in Jesus name.

STANDING FIRM IN TRIALS

STANDING FIRM IN TRIALS

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: 1 Corinthians 10:12-13

Key Verse: “Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.”1 Corinthians 10:12 (KJV)

Supporting Texts: James 1:2-4; Romans 5:3-5; Ephesians 6:13-14; Psalm 46:1-3; Hebrews 10:35-36; 1 Peter 5:8-10

Description: Trials test our faith, expose our weaknesses, and provide opportunities for spiritual growth. The believer who stands firmly in God, remains watchful, depends on His grace, and perseveres through difficulties will emerge stronger and more mature.

INTRODUCTION

Every believer will encounter trials at different stages of life. Trials may come through financial pressure, opposition, disappointment, delayed answers to prayer, family challenges, ministry difficulties, or unexpected circumstances. Being a Christian does not exempt us from trials, but it gives us a foundation upon which we can stand when trials come.

Paul's warning in 1 Corinthians 10:12 is particularly important: “Let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.” Spiritual confidence is good, but spiritual overconfidence is dangerous. We must never assume that yesterday's victory automatically guarantees tomorrow's victory. Every day requires fresh dependence upon God.

Yet there is great encouragement in verse 13. “God is faithful.” He knows what we can bear and provides a way of escape in temptation. Therefore, when trials come, we do not have to collapse under pressure. We can stand firm through faith, prayer, God's Word, wisdom, and the sustaining grace of the Holy Spirit.

1. DO NOT BECOME OVERCONFIDENT

Spiritual pride can make a person vulnerable.

a) Take Heed When You Think You Stand (1 Corinthians 10:12)
Confidence must always be accompanied by humility.

b) Recognise Your Dependence On God (John 15:5)
Apart from Christ, our strength is insufficient.

c) Examine Yourself (2 Corinthians 13:5)
Regular spiritual examination helps identify weaknesses.

d) Walk In Humility (Micah 6:8)
Humility keeps our hearts open to God's guidance.

Biblical Example: Peter confidently declared that he would never deny Christ, but he later denied Him three times (Matthew 26:33-35, 69-75).

2. REMEMBER THAT GOD IS FAITHFUL

Our ability to stand is rooted in God's faithfulness.

a) God Knows Your Limits (1 Corinthians 10:13)
He understands the pressures you face.

b) God Will Not Abandon You (Hebrews 13:5)
His presence remains with His people.

c) God Provides A Way Of Escape (1 Corinthians 10:13)
He does not leave us without help in temptation.

d) God Gives Sufficient Grace (2 Corinthians 12:9)
His grace is sufficient even when our strength is inadequate.

Biblical Example: God sustained Elijah when he became discouraged and exhausted (1 Kings 19:1-8).

3. BUILD YOUR LIFE ON GOD'S WORD

Trials can shake us, but God's Word gives stability.

a) Hear God's Word (Matthew 7:24)
A strong spiritual foundation begins with hearing Christ's teaching.

b) Obey God's Word (James 1:22)
Obedience turns biblical knowledge into spiritual strength.

c) Hide Scripture In Your Heart (Psalm 119:11)
The Word provides guidance during moments of pressure.

d) Meditate On God's Promises (Joshua 1:8)
Meditation strengthens faith and encourages obedience.

Biblical Example: Jesus used Scripture to withstand Satan's attacks during His wilderness temptation (Matthew 4:1-11).

4. STAND FIRM THROUGH PRAYER

Prayer connects us to God's strength.

a) Watch And Pray (Matthew 26:41)
Spiritual alertness and prayer help us resist temptation.

b) Pray Without Ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
Constant fellowship with God strengthens our inner life.

c) Pray For Strength (Ephesians 3:16)
God can strengthen us in our inner being.

d) Cast Your Burdens On God (1 Peter 5:7)
We do not have to carry our burdens alone.

Biblical Example: Jesus prayed earnestly in Gethsemane before facing the cross (Luke 22:39-44).

5. SEE TRIALS AS OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH

Trials can produce spiritual maturity.

a) Count It Joy (James 1:2)
We can rejoice because God can use trials for our development.

b) Trials Test Faith (James 1:3)
Testing reveals and strengthens genuine faith.

c) Develop Endurance (Romans 5:3-4)
Perseverance produces character and hope.

d) Allow God To Complete His Work (James 1:4)
God can use difficult seasons to mature us.

Biblical Example: Joseph's trials in slavery and prison prepared him for the responsibility of leadership in Egypt (Genesis 39-41).

6. PUT ON THE ARMOUR OF GOD

Spiritual battles require spiritual preparation.

a) Stand With Truth (Ephesians 6:14)
Truth protects us from deception.

b) Put On Righteousness (Ephesians 6:14)
A righteous lifestyle strengthens our spiritual defence.

c) Take The Shield Of Faith (Ephesians 6:16)
Faith extinguishes the enemy's fiery attacks.

d) Take The Sword Of The Spirit (Ephesians 6:17)
God's Word is a powerful weapon against spiritual opposition.

Biblical Example: Jesus used God's Word to defeat every temptation Satan presented to Him (Matthew 4:4, 7, 10).

7. RESIST THE ENEMY AND REMAIN STEADFAST

Trials can become opportunities for spiritual attack.

a) Be Sober And Vigilant (1 Peter 5:8)
Spiritual alertness is essential.

b) Resist The Devil (James 4:7)
Do not surrender to satanic pressure.

c) Stand Firm In Faith (1 Peter 5:9)
Remember that other believers also experience trials.

d) Trust God's Ultimate Restoration (1 Peter 5:10)
God can establish and strengthen those who endure.

Biblical Example: Job remained committed to God despite tremendous loss and suffering (Job 1:20-22; 2:9-10).

8. PERSEVERE UNTIL THE END

Victory belongs to those who remain faithful.

a) Do Not Cast Away Your Confidence (Hebrews 10:35)
Do not abandon faith because of temporary difficulties.

b) Have Patience (Hebrews 10:36)
Endurance is necessary to receive God's promises.

c) Keep Your Eyes On Jesus (Hebrews 12:2)
Christ is our perfect example of endurance.

d) Finish Your Race (2 Timothy 4:7)
Our goal is not merely to start well but to finish faithfully.

Biblical Example: Paul endured persecution, imprisonment, hardship, and opposition but remained faithful to Christ until the end (2 Timothy 4:6-8).

CONCLUSION

Trials are not evidence that God has abandoned you. They are seasons in which faith is tested, character is developed, and spiritual roots can grow deeper. However, we must never approach trials with pride or self-confidence. The warning remains: “Let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.”

Stand firmly in Christ. Pray continually, trust God's Word, remain humble, resist the enemy, and take every way of escape God provides. Remember that God is faithful. The trial may test you, but it will not destroy you when you remain anchored in Him. By His grace, you shall stand, overcome, and finish well.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, deliver me from spiritual pride and overconfidence, and teach me to depend completely upon You, in Jesus name.

2. Lord, strengthen my faith whenever I pass through difficult trials and circumstances, in Jesus name.

3. Father, let Your Word become my firm foundation when everything around me is shaking, in Jesus name.

4. Lord, strengthen my prayer life and help me to remain spiritually watchful, in Jesus name.

5. Father, use every trial I face to produce maturity, endurance, character, and stronger faith in me, in Jesus name.

6. Lord, clothe me with the whole armour of God and make me strong against every spiritual attack, in Jesus name.

7. Father, give me grace to resist the devil and remain steadfast in faith, in Jesus name.

8. Lord, show me every way of escape whenever I face temptation and give me courage to take it, in Jesus name.

9. Father, preserve my testimony through every trial and let me come out stronger than I entered, in Jesus name.

10. Lord, give me grace to remain faithful until the end, finish my race well, and receive my eternal reward, in Jesus name.

PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS

1. You shall stand firm when the storms of life arise.

2. You shall not fall because of overconfidence, pride, or spiritual carelessness.

GOD'S WAY OF ESCAPE

GOD'S WAY OF ESCAPE

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: 1 Corinthians 10:13

Key Verse: “But will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”1 Corinthians 10:13 (KJV)

Supporting Texts: Genesis 39:7-12; Matthew 4:1-11; Matthew 26:41; 2 Timothy 2:22; James 4:7; Psalm 119:11; Hebrews 4:15-16

Description: God does not promise that believers will never face temptation, but He promises that temptation will never have the final word. In every temptation, God provides a way of escape. Spiritual wisdom is recognising that escape, choosing it promptly, and relying on God's grace to walk away from sin.

INTRODUCTION

Temptation is one of the realities of the Christian journey. Every believer, regardless of spiritual maturity, may face moments when doing what is right becomes difficult. The presence of temptation, however, does not mean that God has abandoned us. Scripture assures us that “God is faithful” and that He provides a way of escape whenever temptation comes.

The challenge is that God's way of escape may not always look attractive. Sometimes the escape is to walk away from a relationship, refuse an opportunity, close a door, remain silent, change an environment, reject an offer, or immediately obey God's Word. The way of escape may require sacrifice, but it protects our relationship with God and our testimony.

Joseph provides a powerful example. When Potiphar's wife tempted him, he did not remain there to prove how strong he was. He recognised the danger and fled. His garment was left behind, but his integrity was preserved. God's way of escape is sometimes costly, but it is always better than the consequences of sin.

1. RECOGNISE THAT GOD IS FAITHFUL

Our confidence in temptation begins with God's character.

a) God Knows Your Limits (1 Corinthians 10:13)
God understands exactly what we are facing and what we can bear.

b) God Will Not Abandon You (Hebrews 13:5)
His presence remains with His children in difficult moments.

c) God Provides Grace (Hebrews 4:16)
We can approach Him confidently for mercy and strength.

d) God Keeps His Promises (2 Corinthians 1:20)
God's faithfulness gives us confidence to obey Him.

Biblical Example: God remained with Joseph even when he was in difficult circumstances, giving him grace to maintain his integrity (Genesis 39:2, 21).

2. UNDERSTAND THAT EVERY TEMPTATION HAS AN ESCAPE

Paul's words give us hope.

a) Temptation Is Common (1 Corinthians 10:13)
You are not uniquely targeted or alone in experiencing temptation.

b) Temptation Is Not An Excuse For Sin (James 1:14-15)
We remain responsible for how we respond.

c) God Limits The Pressure (1 Corinthians 10:13)
God will not permit temptation to become an excuse for inevitable failure.

d) God Provides A Way Out (1 Corinthians 10:13)
There is a path of obedience available.

Biblical Example: Jesus faced three powerful temptations in the wilderness but remained obedient to God (Matthew 4:1-11).

3. LEARN TO RECOGNISE THE WAY OF ESCAPE

God's escape route requires spiritual discernment.

a) Listen To God's Word (Psalm 119:105)
Scripture provides direction when temptation comes.

b) Pay Attention To Warning Signs (Proverbs 22:3)
Wisdom recognises danger before it becomes destruction.

c) Listen To The Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:16)
Walking in the Spirit helps us overcome fleshly desires.

d) Respond Quickly (Proverbs 4:14-15)
Do not linger around a path that leads towards sin.

Biblical Example: Joseph recognised the danger immediately and refused to entertain the temptation (Genesis 39:7-12).

4. FLEE WHEN GOD SAYS ESCAPE

Sometimes the way of escape is simply to run.

a) Flee Sexual Immorality (1 Corinthians 6:18)
Sexual temptation should not be negotiated with.

b) Flee Idolatry (1 Corinthians 10:14)
Separate yourself from anything that competes with God.

c) Flee Youthful Lusts (2 Timothy 2:22)
Spiritual wisdom sometimes requires immediate physical separation.

d) Flee Every Appearance Of Evil (1 Thessalonians 5:22)
Do not deliberately remain around sinful influences.

Biblical Example: Joseph physically fled when Potiphar's wife attempted to seduce him (Genesis 39:11-12).

5. USE GOD'S WORD AS YOUR ESCAPE ROUTE

The Word provides strength and direction.

a) Hide The Word In Your Heart (Psalm 119:11)
Scripture helps prevent us from yielding to sin.

b) Remember God's Commands (Psalm 119:9)
God's Word provides a standard for pure living.

c) Answer Temptation With Scripture (Matthew 4:4)
Jesus responded to Satan's lies with God's truth.

d) Practise What You Learn (James 1:22)
The Word becomes effective when it is obeyed.

Biblical Example: Jesus defeated every wilderness temptation by applying Scripture correctly (Matthew 4:4, 7, 10).

6. DEVELOP THE DISCIPLINE TO WALK AWAY

The way of escape often requires decisive action.

a) Make No Provision For The Flesh (Romans 13:14)
Do not create opportunities for sinful desires.

b) Guard Your Heart (Proverbs 4:23)
What enters and remains in the heart eventually affects conduct.

c) Control Your Environment (Psalm 101:3)
Be intentional about what you allow before your eyes and into your life.

d) Practise Self-Control (Galatians 5:22-23)
The Holy Spirit produces the discipline necessary for victory.

Biblical Example: Daniel deliberately resolved not to defile himself with the king's food (Daniel 1:8).

7. RESIST THE ENEMY THROUGH FAITH

Not every temptation requires physical escape; some require spiritual resistance.

a) Submit To God (James 4:7)
Victory begins with surrender to God's authority.

b) Resist The Devil (James 4:7)
We must actively reject the enemy's suggestions.

c) Stand Firm In Faith (1 Peter 5:9)
Faith strengthens us when pressure comes.

d) Put On God's Armour (Ephesians 6:11)
Spiritual armour equips us to withstand satanic attacks.

Biblical Example: Jesus refused Satan's offers and remained committed to the Father's will (Matthew 4:8-10).

8. CHOOSE THE ESCAPE BEFORE THE CONSEQUENCE

A moment of escape can save years of regret.

a) Sin Has Consequences (Galatians 6:7-8)
What we sow eventually produces a harvest.

b) Do Not Be Deceived (Galatians 6:7)
Sin often promises pleasure but hides its consequences.

c) Choose Obedience Over Temporary Pleasure (Hebrews 11:24-26)
Moses valued God's eternal reward above temporary pleasures.

d) Protect Your Testimony (Proverbs 22:1)
A good name is more valuable than material wealth.

Biblical Example: Joseph lost his garment and temporarily suffered imprisonment, but he preserved his integrity and ultimately experienced God's elevation (Genesis 39:20-23; 41:39-41).

CONCLUSION

God's way of escape is evidence of His faithfulness. Whenever temptation comes, we should never assume that we have no choice. God has already promised to provide a way out. Our responsibility is to recognise it, choose it, and act upon it. Sometimes it will be through prayer; sometimes through Scripture; sometimes through another believer's counsel; and sometimes simply by physically walking away.

Do not wait until temptation becomes overwhelming before looking for the escape route. Develop spiritual sensitivity now. Know God's Word, maintain a strong prayer life, guard your environment, listen to the Holy Spirit, and flee when necessary. The garment you leave behind may represent a temporary loss, but the integrity you preserve will become a lasting testimony.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, help me to recognise every way of escape You provide whenever I face temptation, in Jesus name.

2. Lord, give me spiritual discernment to identify danger before it becomes sin, in Jesus name.

3. Father, strengthen me by Your grace whenever I am under pressure to compromise, in Jesus name.

4. Lord, give me courage to walk away from every relationship, environment, opportunity, or habit that can lead me into sin, in Jesus name.

5. Father, fill my heart with Your Word and make Scripture a strong defence against temptation, in Jesus name.

6. Lord, help me to walk continually in the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit, in Jesus name.

7. Father, develop strong self-control in me and help me to refuse every sinful desire, in Jesus name.

8. Lord, give me grace to resist the devil and stand firmly in faith, in Jesus name.

9. Father, help me to value my testimony more than temporary pleasure or personal advantage, in Jesus name.

10. Lord, whenever temptation comes, help me to choose Your way of escape, remain faithful, and overcome every attempt of the enemy, in Jesus name.

PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS

1. You shall never be without a way of escape when temptation comes.

2. Your spiritual eyes shall recognise every danger before it destroys you.

3. The grace of God shall strengthen you in every moment of weakness.

4. You shall have the courage to walk away from every compromising situation.

5. The Word of God shall preserve your heart from sin.

6. You shall walk in the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit.

7. Every recurring temptation that has troubled your life shall lose its grip over you.

8. You shall resist the enemy and stand firm in faith.

9. Your testimony shall not be exchanged for temporary pleasure.

10. By the faithfulness of God, you shall recognise every divine escape route, overcome every temptation, preserve your integrity, and finish your race well, in Jesus name.

OVERCOMING TEMPTATION

OVERCOMING TEMPTATION

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: 1 Corinthians 10:13

Key Verse: “God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able.”1 Corinthians 10:13 (KJV)

Supporting Texts: James 1:12-15; Matthew 26:41; Hebrews 4:15-16; James 4:7; Psalm 119:11; 2 Timothy 2:22

Description: Temptation is a real part of the Christian journey, but believers are not helpless before it. God remains faithful, provides grace and a way of escape, and gives us the strength to resist temptation and remain faithful to Him.

INTRODUCTION

Every believer faces temptation. Temptation may come through desires, opportunities, relationships, possessions, pressure, discouragement, anger, pride, or circumstances. The presence of temptation does not mean that a person has failed spiritually; failure occurs when temptation is entertained, embraced, and turned into sinful action.

Paul's words in 1 Corinthians 10:13 give tremendous encouragement: “God is faithful.” The believer's confidence in temptation is not primarily in personal strength but in the faithfulness of God. He knows our limitations, understands our struggles, and will not allow temptation to become an excuse for inevitable failure.

However, God's faithfulness does not mean that we should deliberately expose ourselves to temptation. Scripture commands us to watch, pray, flee evil, resist the devil, renew our minds, and make wise choices. Victory requires both dependence upon God's grace and responsible spiritual discipline.

1. UNDERSTAND THE NATURE OF TEMPTATION

Understanding temptation helps us deal with it wisely.

a) Temptation Is Common To Humanity (1 Corinthians 10:13)
No believer is completely exempt from temptation.

b) Temptation Is Not Sin In Itself (Hebrews 4:15)
Jesus was tempted yet remained without sin.

c) Desire Can Become A Gateway To Sin (James 1:14-15)
Uncontrolled desire can lead to sinful actions and consequences.

d) Satan Uses Temptation To Attack Faith (Matthew 4:1-11)
The enemy seeks to draw people away from obedience to God.

Biblical Example: Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, but He resisted every temptation through obedience to God's Word (Matthew 4:1-11).

2. REMEMBER THAT GOD IS FAITHFUL

Our greatest confidence in temptation is God's faithfulness.

a) God Knows Your Limits (1 Corinthians 10:13)
He understands what you can bear.

b) God Will Not Abandon You (Hebrews 13:5)
His presence remains with His children.

c) God Provides Grace (Hebrews 4:16)
We can approach God's throne confidently for mercy and grace.

d) God Provides A Way Of Escape (1 Corinthians 10:13)
There is always a God-provided opportunity to choose obedience.

Biblical Example: Joseph faced intense temptation, but God gave him the wisdom and courage to flee from it (Genesis 39:7-12).

3. WATCH AND PRAY

Spiritual alertness is essential for overcoming temptation.

a) Watch And Pray (Matthew 26:41)
Jesus connected spiritual weakness with a failure to watch and pray.

b) Be Sober And Vigilant (1 Peter 5:8)
Believers must recognise that spiritual opposition is real.

c) Pray Before Temptation Comes (Luke 11:4)
A strong prayer life prepares us for difficult moments.

d) Depend On The Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:16)
Walking in the Spirit helps prevent us from fulfilling fleshly desires.

Biblical Example: Daniel maintained his prayer discipline despite pressure and threats (Daniel 6:10).

4. KNOW YOUR WAY OF ESCAPE

God provides an escape, but we must take it.

a) Flee Sexual Immorality (1 Corinthians 6:18)
Some temptations require physical separation.

b) Flee Idolatry (1 Corinthians 10:14)
Do not remain around influences that draw your heart away from God.

c) Flee Youthful Lusts (2 Timothy 2:22)
Spiritual wisdom sometimes means walking away immediately.

d) Avoid The Path Of The Wicked (Proverbs 4:14-15)
Do not deliberately place yourself where temptation is likely to dominate.

Biblical Example: Joseph left his garment behind and fled rather than remain in a compromising situation (Genesis 39:12).

5. RESIST THE DEVIL

Believers have authority to resist satanic influence.

a) Submit To God (James 4:7)
Victory begins with submission to God's authority.

b) Resist The Devil (James 4:7)
We must actively refuse the enemy's suggestions.

c) Stand Firm In Faith (1 Peter 5:9)
Faith provides strength against spiritual attacks.

d) Put On The Armour Of God (Ephesians 6:11)
God provides spiritual weapons for resisting the enemy.

Biblical Example: Jesus repeatedly answered Satan's temptations with the authority of Scripture (Matthew 4:4, 7, 10).

6. FILL YOUR HEART WITH GOD'S WORD

The Word of God strengthens us against temptation.

a) Hide God's Word In Your Heart (Psalm 119:11)
Scripture helps guard us against sin.

b) Meditate On God's Word (Psalm 1:2)
Meditation allows God's truth to shape our thinking.

c) Obey What God Says (James 1:22)
Victory requires more than hearing God's Word.

d) Use Scripture In Spiritual Battle (Ephesians 6:17)
The Word of God is the sword of the Spirit.

Biblical Example: Jesus answered every wilderness temptation by quoting and applying Scripture (Matthew 4:4, 7, 10).

7. CONTROL YOUR DESIRES

Temptation becomes dangerous when desires control us.

a) Practise Self-Control (Galatians 5:22-23)
Self-control is part of the fruit produced by the Holy Spirit.

b) Crucify The Flesh (Galatians 5:24)
Believers must refuse to allow sinful desires to dominate.

c) Renew Your Mind (Romans 12:2)
Transformation begins with changed thinking.

d) Make No Provision For The Flesh (Romans 13:14)
Do not deliberately create opportunities for sinful desires.

Biblical Example: Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the king's food, demonstrating disciplined conviction (Daniel 1:8).

8. LEARN FROM THOSE WHO FELL

The failures of others should become warnings rather than invitations.

a) Israel's Failures Are Examples (1 Corinthians 10:6)
Their mistakes were recorded to teach later generations.

b) Avoid Overconfidence (1 Corinthians 10:12)
Anyone who thinks he stands securely must remain watchful.

c) Learn From Consequences (Proverbs 22:3)
Wisdom sees danger and takes appropriate action.

d) Choose The Fear Of The Lord (Proverbs 14:16)
Reverence for God helps us turn away from evil.

Biblical Example: David's fall with Bathsheba demonstrates the devastating consequences of entertaining temptation rather than resisting it (2 Samuel 11:1-5).

CONCLUSION

Temptation is unavoidable, but defeat is not inevitable. God has promised that no temptation will come upon us beyond what we can bear and that He will provide a way of escape. Therefore, we must never say, “I had no choice.” By God's grace, there is always a path of obedience.

When temptation comes, do not negotiate with it. Pray, watch, resist, flee when necessary, fill your heart with God's Word, and depend upon the Holy Spirit. Remember that Jesus understands our struggles and is able to help us. Victory is possible, and by God's grace, you can overcome temptation and remain faithful.

AVOIDING IDOLATRY

AVOIDING IDOLATRY

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: 1 Corinthians 10:7, 14

Key Verse: “Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.”1 Corinthians 10:14 (KJV)

Supporting Texts: Exodus 20:3-5; Deuteronomy 6:13-15; Matthew 4:10; 1 John 5:21; Colossians 3:5; 1 Corinthians 8:4-6

Description: Idolatry is giving to anything or anyone the devotion, trust, affection, dependence, or worship that belongs exclusively to God. Christians must guard their hearts against both obvious and subtle forms of idolatry and maintain wholehearted devotion to the Lord.

INTRODUCTION

Idolatry was one of the major reasons Israel repeatedly departed from God. Although they had experienced God's miraculous deliverance from Egypt, they still turned to the golden calf and other forms of false worship. Paul reminds the Corinthian believers that these events were recorded as warnings so that Christians would not repeat Israel's mistakes.

Idolatry is not limited to bowing before a physical image. Anything that occupies God's rightful place in our hearts can become an idol. Money, possessions, career, relationships, popularity, pleasure, power, ministry success, and even legitimate blessings can become dangerous when they receive greater devotion than God.

Paul's instruction is direct: “Flee from idolatry.” He does not say to negotiate with it, manage it, or see how close we can get to it. We are to flee. God demands exclusive devotion, and the believer who wants to finish well must continually examine the heart and ensure that nothing has taken God's place.

1. UNDERSTAND WHAT IDOLATRY IS

Idolatry begins when something takes God's rightful place.

a) Worship Belongs To God Alone (Exodus 20:3-5)
God commands His people not to have other gods before Him.

b) Idolatry Is A Heart Issue (Ezekiel 14:3)
An idol can be established internally before it is expressed externally.

c) Anything Can Become An Idol (Colossians 3:5)
Covetousness is described as idolatry because it gives excessive value to material things.

d) God Demands Exclusive Devotion (Deuteronomy 6:14-15)
Our love and allegiance must remain centred on God.

Biblical Example: Israel created and worshipped the golden calf shortly after experiencing God's miraculous deliverance from Egypt (Exodus 32:1-6).

2. REMEMBER THAT GOD ALONE DESERVES WORSHIP

True worship belongs exclusively to the Creator.

a) Worship God Alone (Matthew 4:10)
Jesus clearly declared that worship and service belong to God.

b) There Is One God (1 Corinthians 8:4-6)
There is no true God besides the Lord.

c) Give God First Place (Matthew 6:33)
God's kingdom must remain our highest priority.

d) Love God With All Your Heart (Matthew 22:37)
God does not want partial devotion.

Biblical Example: Jesus rejected Satan's offer of worldly power because He would not compromise His worship of God (Matthew 4:8-10).

3. GUARD AGAINST MATERIAL IDOLATRY

Possessions can quietly compete with God.

a) Beware Of Covetousness (Luke 12:15)
Jesus warned that life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.

b) Do Not Love Money (1 Timothy 6:9-10)
The love of money can turn the heart away from God.

c) Store Up Heavenly Treasure (Matthew 6:19-21)
Our hearts follow what we value most.

d) Be Content With What God Provides (Hebrews 13:5)
Contentment protects the heart from excessive material desire.

Biblical Example: The rich young ruler struggled to surrender his possessions because material wealth had become too important to him (Mark 10:17-22).

4. GUARD AGAINST RELATIONAL IDOLATRY

People can also occupy God's rightful place.

a) Love God Above Everyone Else (Matthew 10:37)
Our love for God must remain supreme.

b) Do Not Make People Your Source (Jeremiah 17:5-7)
Human beings are not designed to replace God as our ultimate confidence.

c) Honour Relationships Without Worshipping Them (Ephesians 5:21)
Healthy relationships must remain under God's authority.

d) Let God Define Your Identity (Galatians 1:10)
Our worth should not depend on human approval.

Biblical Example: Saul's fear of the people eventually influenced his obedience to God (1 Samuel 15:24).

5. GUARD AGAINST THE IDOLATRY OF SELF

Self can become one of the most subtle idols.

a) Deny Yourself (Luke 9:23)
Following Christ requires surrendering selfish control.

b) Do Not Trust In Your Own Wisdom (Proverbs 3:5-7)
We must depend upon God rather than ourselves.

c) Reject Pride (James 4:6)
God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.

d) Let Christ Increase (John 3:30)
The goal of Christian maturity is for Christ to become greater in us.

Biblical Example: Nebuchadnezzar became proud of his achievements and was humbled until he recognised God's sovereignty (Daniel 4:28-37).

6. FLEE IDOLATRY RATHER THAN NEGOTIATE WITH IT

Paul's command in 1 Corinthians 10:14 is urgent.

a) Flee From Idolatry (1 Corinthians 10:14)
Some spiritual dangers require immediate separation.

b) Flee Youthful Lusts (2 Timothy 2:22)
We should run away from influences that can corrupt our faith.

c) Resist The Devil (James 4:7)
We must stand firmly against satanic influence.

d) Avoid Ungodly Associations (1 Corinthians 15:33)
Wrong influences can corrupt good character.

Biblical Example: Joseph did not negotiate with sexual temptation; he physically fled from it (Genesis 39:11-12).

7. DO NOT LET CHRISTIAN LIBERTY LEAD YOU INTO IDOLATRY

Freedom must remain under spiritual wisdom.

a) All Things Are Not Profitable (1 Corinthians 10:23)
Something may be permissible yet spiritually unhelpful.

b) Avoid Stumbling Blocks (1 Corinthians 8:9)
Our choices should not damage another person's faith.

c) Do Everything To God's Glory (1 Corinthians 10:31)
Our freedom must ultimately honour God.

d) Examine Your Motives (1 Corinthians 10:24)
Ask whether your choices are serving God's purposes or merely satisfying self.

Biblical Example: Paul refused to allow personal rights to become a barrier to the Gospel (1 Corinthians 9:19-23).

8. MAINTAIN WHOLEHEARTED DEVOTION TO GOD

The best defence against idolatry is wholehearted love for God.

a) Love God Completely (Deuteronomy 6:5)
Wholehearted love leaves no room for competing gods.

b) Seek God Continually (Psalm 27:8)
A heart that pursues God is less likely to be captured by substitutes.

c) Abide In Christ (John 15:4)
Constant fellowship with Christ strengthens our spiritual lives.

d) Keep Yourself From Idols (1 John 5:21)
John closes his letter with a simple but powerful warning.

Biblical Example: Joshua challenged Israel to choose whom they would serve and declared his family's determination to serve the Lord (Joshua 24:15).

CONCLUSION

Idolatry is dangerous because it can develop gradually and disguise itself as something legitimate. A career, relationship, possession, ministry position, ambition, or desire may not be sinful in itself, but when it receives the devotion, dependence, affection, or priority that belongs to God, it has become an idol.

Therefore, examine your heart regularly. What occupies your thoughts? What determines your choices? What do you fear losing most? What receives your greatest time, affection, confidence, and resources? Let nothing compete with God. Flee idolatry, worship God alone, and keep Christ at the centre of your life.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, search my heart and reveal anything that has taken Your rightful place in my life, in Jesus name.

2. Lord, deliver me from every visible and hidden form of idolatry, in Jesus name.

3. Father, help me to worship You alone and give You first place in every area of my life, in Jesus name.

4. Lord, deliver me from the love of money, covetousness, materialism, and every form of greed, in Jesus name.

5. Father, help me to love people without allowing anyone to replace You as the Lord of my life, in Jesus name.

6. Lord, deliver me from pride, self-will, human approval, and the idolatry of self, in Jesus name.

7. Father, give me grace to flee every temptation and association that could draw me away from You, in Jesus name.

8. Lord, help me to exercise my Christian freedom with wisdom and never become a stumbling block to others, in Jesus name.

9. Father, restore wholehearted devotion to You wherever my love has grown cold or divided, in Jesus name.

10. Lord, keep me faithful to You until the end and let nothing take Your place in my heart, in Jesus name.

PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS

1. Every idol competing with God in your life shall be destroyed.

2. Your heart shall remain completely devoted to the Lord.

3. You shall not be controlled by the love of money or material possessions.

4. No relationship shall take God's rightful place in your heart.

5. You shall overcome the idolatry of self, pride, and human approval.

6. Every ungodly influence drawing you away from God shall be broken.

7. You shall receive grace to flee every form of temptation that threatens your spiritual life.

8. Your Christian liberty shall never become a stumbling block to another person's faith.

9. Your love for God shall increase daily and remain undivided.

10. You shall worship God alone, serve Him faithfully, and finish your Christian race without bowing to any idol, in Jesus name.

LEARNING FROM ISRAEL'S FAILURES

LEARNING FROM ISRAEL'S FAILURES

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: 1 Corinthians 10:1-11

Key Verse: “Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.”1 Corinthians 10:6 (KJV)

Supporting Texts: Romans 15:4; Numbers 14:22-23; Hebrews 3:7-19; Proverbs 28:13; James 1:14-16; 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Description: The failures of Israel in the wilderness provide serious warnings for believers today. Spiritual privileges do not automatically guarantee spiritual success. We must learn from their mistakes, reject idolatry, resist temptation, avoid murmuring, remain faithful to God, and finish our journey well.

INTRODUCTION

The history of Israel contains both remarkable victories and painful failures. God delivered the Israelites from Egypt, opened the Red Sea, provided food and water, guided them by His presence, and established a covenant with them. Yet many who experienced these extraordinary blessings failed to enter the Promised Land because of unbelief, disobedience, idolatry, immorality, and rebellion.

Paul uses these events as warnings to the Corinthian believers. He explains that the things which happened to Israel were written as examples for Christians. Their experiences teach us that spiritual privileges must be accompanied by spiritual responsibility. Being blessed, gifted, active in church, or familiar with God's Word does not make a person immune to temptation or failure.

We must therefore learn from the mistakes of those who went before us. We do not have to repeat every mistake personally in order to learn its lesson. Wisdom enables us to observe the consequences of disobedience and choose a better path. If we learn from Israel's failures, we can avoid their traps and run our Christian race faithfully to the end.

1. DO NOT TRUST IN SPIRITUAL PRIVILEGES ALONE

Israel experienced extraordinary spiritual privileges, yet many still failed.

a) They Were Under The Cloud (1 Corinthians 10:1)
God visibly guided and protected them.

b) They Passed Through The Sea (1 Corinthians 10:1)
They experienced God's miraculous deliverance from Egypt.

c) They Experienced Baptism Unto Moses (1 Corinthians 10:2)
They were identified with God's appointed servant and covenant community.

d) Privileges Do Not Replace Obedience (1 Corinthians 10:5)
Despite their privileges, many displeased God.

Biblical Example: The Israelites witnessed God's mighty works in Egypt and at the Red Sea but later doubted Him when they faced challenges in the wilderness.

2. GUARD AGAINST IDOLATRY

Idolatry can replace God at the centre of our lives.

a) Do Not Become Idolaters (1 Corinthians 10:7)
Paul specifically warns believers against following Israel's example.

b) Do Not Exchange God For Created Things (Romans 1:25)
Anything that takes God's rightful place becomes an idol.

c) Examine Your Priorities (Matthew 6:33)
Our priorities reveal what we truly value.

d) Worship God Alone (Matthew 4:10)
God demands exclusive devotion.

Biblical Example: Israel made and worshipped the golden calf while Moses was on Mount Sinai (Exodus 32:1-6).

3. FLEE SEXUAL IMMORALITY

Sexual sin can destroy lives and spiritual destinies.

a) Do Not Commit Sexual Immorality (1 Corinthians 10:8)
Paul reminds believers of Israel's tragic failure.

b) Flee Sexual Sin (1 Corinthians 6:18)
Some temptations must be escaped rather than entertained.

c) Guard Your Body (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)
The believer's body belongs to God.

d) Pursue Purity (2 Timothy 2:22)
We must deliberately pursue righteousness and holiness.

Biblical Example: Israel's sexual immorality with the Moabite women brought severe judgement upon the people (Numbers 25:1-9).

4. DO NOT TEST THE LORD

God's patience should never be mistaken for permission to disobey.

a) Do Not Tempt Christ (1 Corinthians 10:9)
Paul warns against presumptuous behaviour towards God.

b) Trust God's Wisdom (Proverbs 3:5-6)
Faith means trusting God's direction rather than demanding our own way.

c) Obey God's Instructions (Deuteronomy 6:16)
We must not deliberately place God to the test.

d) Remain Humble Before God (Micah 6:8)
Humility keeps us dependent upon God's wisdom.

Biblical Example: Israel complained about God's provision and questioned His presence, resulting in divine judgement (Numbers 21:4-6).

5. AVOID MURMURING AND COMPLAINING

Persistent complaining can reveal a heart that has lost trust in God.

a) Do Not Murmur (1 Corinthians 10:10)
Paul warns believers against Israel's pattern of complaining.

b) Give Thanks In All Things (1 Thessalonians 5:18)
Gratitude helps us recognise God's faithfulness.

c) Trust God During Difficult Seasons (Philippians 4:11-13)
Contentment is learned through dependence on Christ.

d) Let Your Words Build Others (Ephesians 4:29)
Our speech should strengthen rather than discourage.

Biblical Example: Israel repeatedly complained about food, water, leadership, and circumstances despite God's continuous provision (Numbers 11:1-6).

6. LEARN TO RECOGNISE THE DANGER OF PRESUMPTION

Past victories do not guarantee future obedience.

a) Let Him Who Thinks He Stands Take Heed (1 Corinthians 10:12)
Overconfidence can make us careless.

b) Examine Yourself (2 Corinthians 13:5)
Regular spiritual examination helps identify weaknesses.

c) Depend On God's Grace (John 15:5)
We cannot maintain spiritual victory through human strength alone.

d) Stay Watchful (Matthew 26:41)
Spiritual vigilance is necessary because temptation is real.

Biblical Example: Peter confidently declared that he would never deny Jesus, yet he later denied Him three times (Matthew 26:33-35, 69-75).

7. LEARN FROM GOD'S DISCIPLINE

God's warnings and discipline are intended to correct us.

a) These Things Were Written For Our Warning (1 Corinthians 10:11)
Scripture records past failures so that we can learn from them.

b) Do Not Despise Correction (Proverbs 3:11-12)
God disciplines those He loves.

c) Repent When You Discover Sin (Proverbs 28:13)
Confession and repentance open the way to mercy.

d) Allow Correction To Produce Growth (Hebrews 12:10-11)
God's discipline can produce righteousness and spiritual maturity.

Biblical Example: David responded to Nathan's confrontation with genuine repentance after his sin with Bathsheba (2 Samuel 12:1-13; Psalm 51).

8. FINISH THE JOURNEY FAITHFULLY

The greatest lesson from Israel's failures is the importance of finishing well.

a) Do Not Fall After Their Example (1 Corinthians 10:12)
We must learn from those who failed.

b) Run With Endurance (Hebrews 12:1)
The Christian journey requires perseverance.

c) Remain Faithful To The End (Matthew 24:13)
Endurance is essential for completing the race.

d) Keep The Faith (2 Timothy 4:7)
Our goal should be to finish our course faithfully.

Biblical Example: Joshua and Caleb remained faithful when the majority of Israel responded to God's promise with unbelief (Numbers 14:6-9, 24).

CONCLUSION

Israel's history is more than an account of ancient events; it is a spiritual warning for every generation. They experienced God's power, provision, guidance, and protection, yet many fell because they allowed unbelief, idolatry, immorality, complaining, and rebellion to overcome their commitment to God. Their story teaches us that spiritual privileges must never produce spiritual carelessness.

Let us therefore learn from their failures rather than repeat them. Guard your heart, reject idolatry, flee sexual immorality, control your tongue, resist temptation, receive correction, and remain dependent upon God's grace. Do not become overconfident because of past victories. Keep watch, keep believing, keep obeying, and keep running until you finish your race.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, give me wisdom to learn from the failures recorded in Scripture and avoid repeating them, in Jesus name.

2. Lord, deliver me from spiritual pride and overconfidence that can make me careless, in Jesus name.

3. Father, remove every idol competing with Your rightful place in my heart, in Jesus name.

4. Lord, give me grace to flee every form of sexual immorality and maintain purity, in Jesus name.

5. Father, deliver me from murmuring, complaining, unbelief, and ingratitude, in Jesus name.

6. Lord, help me never to test or take Your grace for granted but to walk in reverent obedience, in Jesus name.

7. Father, give me a humble heart that receives correction and responds quickly to repentance, in Jesus name.

8. Lord, preserve me from every temptation that could cause me to fall away from Your purpose, in Jesus name.

9. Father, help me to remain watchful, prayerful, obedient, and dependent upon Your grace every day, in Jesus name.

10. Lord, let me learn from Israel's failures, avoid their mistakes, finish my race faithfully, and enter into all that You have prepared for me, in Jesus name.

PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS

1. You shall not repeat the mistakes that destroyed those who went before you.

2. Every form of spiritual carelessness shall be removed from your life.

3. You shall not exchange your relationship with God for any idol or earthly pleasure.

4. You shall walk in sexual purity and holiness.

5. Your mouth shall be delivered from destructive murmuring and complaining.

6. You shall not fall through pride, presumption, or overconfidence.

7. The Lord shall give you grace to recognise and overcome every temptation.

8. You shall receive correction with humility and grow stronger through God's discipline.

9. You shall remain faithful to God through every season of your life.

10. You shall not perish in the wilderness of life; by God's grace, you shall finish your journey, fulfil your purpose, and enter into your God-ordained inheritance, in Jesus name.

CHRISTIAN CONDUCT

CHRISTIAN CONDUCT

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: 1 Corinthians 10:32-33

Key Verse: “Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God.”1 Corinthians 10:32 (KJV)

Supporting Texts: Matthew 5:16; Philippians 1:27; Colossians 4:5-6; Ephesians 4:1-3; 1 Peter 2:12; Titus 2:7-8

Description: Christian conduct is the visible expression of our faith. Believers are called to live in a manner that honours Christ, avoids unnecessary offence, strengthens others, maintains a good testimony, and causes people to see the character of God through their lives.

INTRODUCTION

Christianity is not merely what we believe; it is also how we live. Our conduct at home, in church, at work, in business, in public places, and in private reveals whether our faith is influencing our character. Paul therefore challenged the Corinthians to conduct themselves carefully so that they would not become a stumbling block to others.

In 1 Corinthians 10:32-33, Paul demonstrates that Christian conduct must consider other people. He did not live merely to protect his own interests but sought the good of many so that they might be saved. His conduct was shaped by a higher purpose: the glory of God and the salvation of people.

As representatives of Christ, we carry His name wherever we go. People may never read a Bible, but they read our lives. Our words, attitudes, relationships, integrity, humility, purity, and response to difficult situations can either attract people to Christ or push them away. Therefore, we must walk carefully and consistently.

1. LIVE TO GLORIFY GOD

The ultimate standard of Christian conduct is God's glory.

a) Do Everything For God's Glory (1 Corinthians 10:31)
Every action should reflect God's honour.

b) Walk Worthy Of The Lord (Colossians 1:10)
Our behaviour should match our identity in Christ.

c) Present Your Body To God (Romans 12:1)
Our entire lives should become instruments of worship.

d) Let Your Light Shine (Matthew 5:16)
Good conduct should direct people towards God.

Biblical Example: Daniel's excellent spirit and integrity caused even pagan rulers to recognise something exceptional in his life (Daniel 6:3-4).

2. AVOID BECOMING A STUMBLING BLOCK

Christian freedom must be exercised with responsibility.

a) Give No Unnecessary Offence (1 Corinthians 10:32)
Believers should avoid behaviour that unnecessarily damages their testimony.

b) Consider The Weak (Romans 15:1)
Spiritual maturity considers the vulnerabilities of others.

c) Use Freedom Wisely (1 Corinthians 8:9)
Our liberty must never become an opportunity to harm another person's faith.

d) Put Others Before Self (1 Corinthians 10:24)
Love considers how our actions affect others.

Biblical Example: Paul willingly surrendered legitimate rights when necessary so that the Gospel would not be hindered (1 Corinthians 9:12, 19-23).

3. MAINTAIN INTEGRITY

Integrity is essential to credible Christian conduct.

a) Walk Honestly (Proverbs 10:9)
Integrity provides security and stability.

b) Tell The Truth (Ephesians 4:25)
Christians should be known for honesty.

c) Keep Your Promises (Matthew 5:37)
Our words should be trustworthy.

d) Do Right In Secret (Luke 12:2-3)
God sees what people cannot see.

Biblical Example: Joseph maintained his integrity in Potiphar's house even when he could have acted secretly (Genesis 39:7-12).

4. CONTROL YOUR WORDS

Christian conduct includes disciplined speech.

a) Speak Gracefully (Colossians 4:6)
Our words should be gracious and wise.

b) Avoid Corrupt Communication (Ephesians 4:29)
Speech that destroys others does not represent Christ.

c) Refuse Gossip And Slander (Titus 3:2)
Believers should not become instruments of division.

d) Speak The Truth In Love (Ephesians 4:15)
Truth must be communicated with the right attitude.

Biblical Example: Barnabas used his words to encourage and strengthen others rather than destroy them (Acts 11:22-24).

5. DEMONSTRATE CHRISTLIKE RELATIONSHIPS

Our treatment of others is part of our testimony.

a) Walk In Love (John 13:34-35)
Jesus identified love as a distinguishing mark of His disciples.

b) Practise Humility (Philippians 2:3)
Humility protects relationships from unnecessary conflict.

c) Forgive Others (Colossians 3:13)
Forgiveness reflects the grace we have received from Christ.

d) Pursue Peace (Romans 12:18)
Believers should actively pursue peaceful relationships.

Biblical Example: Joseph forgave his brothers rather than retaliating against them for their past actions (Genesis 50:19-21).

6. MAINTAIN MORAL PURITY

A holy life is part of Christian conduct.

a) Flee Sexual Immorality (1 Corinthians 6:18)
Sexual purity is a serious Christian responsibility.

b) Guard Your Heart (Proverbs 4:23)
Purity begins internally before it becomes visible externally.

c) Avoid Ungodly Influences (1 Corinthians 15:33)
Wrong associations can corrupt good character.

d) Pursue Holiness (Hebrews 12:14)
Believers are called to pursue holiness in every area of life.

Biblical Example: Joseph refused sexual immorality because he understood that sin would be an offence against God (Genesis 39:9).

7. BE A GOOD EXAMPLE TO OTHERS

Christian conduct should inspire others to follow Christ.

a) Be An Example In Speech (1 Timothy 4:12)
Our conversations should reflect Christian maturity.

b) Be An Example In Conduct (1 Timothy 4:12)
Our lifestyle should support our message.

c) Be An Example In Love And Faith (1 Timothy 4:12)
Christian character should be visible in relationships and convictions.

d) Be An Example In Purity (1 Timothy 4:12)
Moral integrity strengthens our testimony.

Biblical Example: Paul could confidently tell believers to follow his example because he sought to imitate Christ (1 Corinthians 11:1).

8. LIVE SO THAT OTHERS MAY BE SAVED

Christian conduct has an evangelistic purpose.

a) Seek The Good Of Many (1 Corinthians 10:33)
Paul's lifestyle was shaped by concern for others.

b) Let Your Light Shine (Matthew 5:16)
Good works can open people's hearts to God.

c) Walk Wisely Before Outsiders (Colossians 4:5)
Our behaviour among unbelievers matters.

d) Adorn The Doctrine Of God (Titus 2:10)
A godly lifestyle makes the Gospel attractive.

Biblical Example: The early Christians' love, generosity, unity, and practical care for one another created a powerful witness to the surrounding community (Acts 2:44-47).

CONCLUSION

Christian conduct is the Gospel lived out before the eyes of the world. Our testimony is not established merely by what we say in church but by how we behave when we are outside church. People observe how we handle money, conflict, temptation, authority, relationships, disappointment, success, and responsibility.

PLEASING GOD ABOVE SELF

PLEASING GOD ABOVE SELF

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: 1 Corinthians 10:31-33

Key Verse: “Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.”1 Corinthians 10:33 (KJV)

Supporting Texts: Galatians 1:10; Colossians 1:10; Hebrews 11:6; John 8:29; Philippians 2:3-5; Romans 15:1-3

Description: Pleasing God above self means making God's will, glory, and approval more important than personal comfort, recognition, preferences, or advantage. It is a Christ-centred way of life in which our decisions are governed by what honours God and benefits others.

INTRODUCTION

Human nature naturally seeks personal satisfaction and approval. We often ask, “What do I want?”, “What benefits me?”, or “What will people think about me?” However, the Christian is called to a higher standard. Our primary question should be, “Does this please God?” When pleasing God becomes our priority, our choices, relationships, ambitions, and conduct begin to change.

Paul demonstrates this principle in 1 Corinthians 10:31-33. He teaches believers to do everything for God's glory and not to seek their own advantage. Paul was willing to surrender legitimate personal interests if doing so would help others and advance the Gospel. His life demonstrates that Christian maturity is seen when God's interests become greater than our own.

Jesus Christ is the perfect example. He said, “I do always those things that please him” (John 8:29). His life was not centred on personal comfort but on obedience to the Father. If we desire to follow Christ faithfully, we must learn to put God's pleasure above our own desires.

1. MAKE PLEASING GOD YOUR HIGHEST PRIORITY

God's approval should matter more than human approval.

a) Seek God's Approval (Galatians 1:10)
A servant of Christ cannot make pleasing people his supreme goal.

b) Do Everything For God's Glory (1 Corinthians 10:31)
Every area of life should be directed towards God's honour.

c) Walk Worthy Of The Lord (Colossians 1:10)
Our conduct should consistently reflect our relationship with Christ.

d) Seek First God's Kingdom (Matthew 6:33)
God's kingdom must take precedence over personal interests.

Biblical Example: Jesus consistently prioritised the Father's will above His own comfort (John 6:38).

2. DENY SELF WHEN NECESSARY

Pleasing God sometimes requires saying no to ourselves.

a) Deny Yourself (Luke 9:23)
Following Christ requires surrendering personal desires when they conflict with God's will.

b) Take Up Your Cross (Luke 9:23)
Discipleship involves sacrifice and obedience.

c) Crucify Fleshly Desires (Galatians 5:24)
Those who belong to Christ must refuse to be controlled by sinful desires.

d) Present Yourself To God (Romans 12:1)
Our lives should become living sacrifices dedicated to God.

Biblical Example: Abraham was willing to surrender Isaac because obedience to God was more important than his personal attachment (Genesis 22:1-12).

3. PUT OTHERS BEFORE SELFISH INTEREST

Pleasing God includes caring about the welfare of others.

a) Do Not Seek Your Own Advantage (1 Corinthians 10:24)
Christian love considers how our choices affect others.

b) Consider Others Better Than Yourself (Philippians 2:3)
Humility rejects selfish ambition.

c) Look To The Interests Of Others (Philippians 2:4)
Spiritual maturity moves beyond self-centred living.

d) Bear The Weaknesses Of Others (Romans 15:1)
Those who are strong should help rather than condemn the weak.

Biblical Example: Paul willingly sacrificed his rights so that others could be saved (1 Corinthians 9:19-23).

4. FOLLOW CHRIST'S EXAMPLE OF OBEDIENCE

Jesus demonstrated what it means to live for God's pleasure.

a) He Always Did The Father's Will (John 8:29)
Jesus' life was consistently directed towards pleasing the Father.

b) He Obeyed Even When It Was Painful (Philippians 2:8)
Christ remained obedient even unto death.

c) He Sought God's Glory (John 17:4)
Jesus completed the work the Father gave Him.

d) He Served Others (Mark 10:45)
His life was characterised by sacrificial service.

Biblical Example: In Gethsemane, Jesus surrendered His human desire to avoid suffering to the Father's will (Matthew 26:39).

5. REJECT THE DESIRE FOR HUMAN APPLAUSE

The fear of people can prevent obedience to God.

a) Do Not Live For Human Praise (John 12:43)
Some people loved human approval more than God's approval.

b) Fear God Rather Than People (Proverbs 29:25)
The fear of man can become a spiritual trap.

c) Serve Christ Sincerely (Ephesians 6:6-7)
Our service should come from the heart rather than a desire to impress people.

d) Seek God's Commendation (Matthew 25:21)
The most valuable approval is the Master's: “Well done.”

Biblical Example: Peter and the apostles chose obedience to God rather than obedience to human authorities (Acts 5:29).

6. MAKE GODLY CHOICES WHEN NO ONE IS WATCHING

True devotion is demonstrated in private.

a) Walk In Integrity (Proverbs 10:9)
Integrity means doing what is right even when there is no audience.

b) Guard Your Secret Life (Psalm 139:23-24)
God sees what others cannot see.

c) Flee Secret Sin (2 Timothy 2:22)
Private compromise can eventually become public failure.

d) Remember God's Presence (Psalm 139:7-10)
We cannot hide from God.

Biblical Example: Joseph refused Potiphar's wife's advances because he knew that sin would ultimately be against God (Genesis 39:9).

7. USE YOUR FREEDOM TO HONOUR GOD

Christian liberty must remain under the control of love.

a) Not Everything Is Profitable (1 Corinthians 10:23)
Something can be permissible but still spiritually unhelpful.

b) Avoid Becoming A Stumbling Block (1 Corinthians 10:32)
Our liberty should not damage another person's faith.

c) Sacrifice Rights For The Gospel (1 Corinthians 9:12)
Paul willingly surrendered certain rights for the sake of others.

d) Let Love Govern Your Freedom (1 Corinthians 8:9-13)
Christian liberty must never become an excuse for selfishness.

Biblical Example: Paul adapted his behaviour and surrendered personal preferences so that he could win more people to Christ (1 Corinthians 9:19-23).

8. LIVE FOR GOD'S GLORY UNTIL THE END

A God-pleasing life must remain consistent.

a) Do All For God's Glory (1 Corinthians 10:31)
God's glory should remain the ultimate purpose of our lives.

b) Seek To Please God In Everything (Hebrews 11:6)
Faithful living begins with confidence that God rewards those who diligently seek Him.

c) Finish Your Course (2 Timothy 4:7)
Paul remained committed until the end.

d) Receive The Eternal Reward (2 Timothy 4:8)
Those who remain faithful can anticipate God's eternal reward.

Biblical Example: Paul could testify at the end of his life that he had fought the good fight, finished his course, and kept the faith.

CONCLUSION

Pleasing God above self is one of the clearest marks of genuine discipleship. It requires us to surrender selfish ambitions, personal preferences, and the desire for human approval whenever they conflict with God's will. It also requires us to consider how our choices affect others and whether our lives are advancing the Gospel.

Let the words of Jesus become the guiding principle of our lives: “I do always those things that please him.” May we learn to ask before every decision, “Does this please God? Does it glorify Him? Does it help others?” When God's pleasure becomes our greatest pursuit, our lives will become instruments of His glory, and we will be able to finish our race with confidence.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, give me grace to make pleasing You the highest priority of my life, in Jesus name.

2. Lord, deliver me from selfish desires and every ambition that competes with Your will, in Jesus name.

3. Father, give me grace to deny myself whenever my desires conflict with Your purpose, in Jesus name.

4. Lord, give me the mind of Christ and help me to consider the welfare of others, in Jesus name.

5. Father, deliver me from the fear of man and the desire for human applause, in Jesus name.

6. Lord, help me to maintain integrity and purity even when nobody is watching, in Jesus name.

7. Father, teach me to use my Christian freedom wisely and never become a stumbling block to another believer, in Jesus name.

8. Lord, help me to make decisions that glorify You rather than decisions that merely satisfy me, in Jesus name.

9. Father, let my life, service, relationships, and testimony continually bring pleasure and honour to Your name, in Jesus name.

10. Lord, help me to remain faithful until the end and finish my race as one who pleased You, in Jesus name.

PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS

1. You shall receive grace to put God above every personal desire.

2. Every selfish ambition competing with God's purpose in your life shall be brought under control.

3. You shall walk in the mind and humility of Christ.

4. The fear of man shall not control your decisions.

5. You shall receive courage to obey God even when obedience is costly.

6. Your private life shall agree with your public testimony.

7. Your freedom shall be used responsibly for the glory of God and the blessing of others.

8. Your decisions shall increasingly reflect God's wisdom and will.

9. Your life shall bring glory to God and become a blessing to many.

10. At the end of your journey, you shall be found faithful, and you shall hear the Master's commendation, “Well done, good and faithful servant,” in Jesus name.

HONOURING GOD IN DAILY LIVING

HONOURING GOD IN DAILY LIVING

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: 1 Corinthians 10:31

Key Verse: “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.”1 Corinthians 10:31 (KJV)

Supporting Texts: Colossians 3:17, 23-24; Matthew 5:16; Romans 12:1-2; Micah 6:8; Proverbs 3:5-6; 1 Peter 2:12

Description: Honouring God is not limited to church services, prayer meetings, or public ministry. It is a daily lifestyle of making choices, conducting relationships, performing responsibilities, using resources, and responding to circumstances in ways that please and glorify God.

INTRODUCTION

Many believers separate their spiritual lives from their everyday lives. They honour God during worship but may forget Him in their workplaces, businesses, homes, relationships, conversations, finances, and private decisions. However, 1 Corinthians 10:31 teaches that everything we do can become an opportunity to glorify God.

Paul's instruction is comprehensive: “Whatsoever ye do.” This means that Christianity is not merely a Sunday experience. God is concerned about how we conduct ourselves every day, whether anyone is watching or not. Our ordinary activities can become acts of worship when they are performed with the right heart and for God's glory.

To honour God daily, we must consciously acknowledge Him in every area of life. Our words should honour Him, our work should honour Him, our relationships should honour Him, and our choices should reflect His character. When believers live this way, their everyday lives become a living testimony of the reality of Christ.

1. MAKE GOD'S GLORY THE PURPOSE OF YOUR LIFE

Everything begins with the right motivation.

a) Do Everything For God's Glory (1 Corinthians 10:31)
God should be the ultimate purpose behind everything we do.

b) Live As God's Representatives (2 Corinthians 5:20)
Our conduct should accurately represent Christ to others.

c) Seek God's Approval (Galatians 1:10)
The desire to please God must be greater than the desire for human applause.

d) Offer Your Whole Life To God (Romans 12:1)
Our entire lives should become a living sacrifice of worship.

Biblical Example: Paul considered his entire life and ministry an offering to God's purpose (Philippians 1:20-21).

2. HONOUR GOD IN YOUR THOUGHTS

God is concerned about our inner life.

a) Guard Your Heart (Proverbs 4:23)
Our thoughts influence our words, choices, and actions.

b) Think On What Is Pure (Philippians 4:8)
Godly thoughts produce godly conduct.

c) Take Thoughts Captive (2 Corinthians 10:5)
We must bring ungodly thoughts under Christ's authority.

d) Set Your Mind On Things Above (Colossians 3:2)
Our minds should be occupied with eternal and godly realities.

Biblical Example: Joseph refused to entertain the sinful opportunity presented to him because his heart was committed to honouring God (Genesis 39:9).

3. HONOUR GOD WITH YOUR WORDS

Our speech reveals the condition of our hearts.

a) Speak Truth (Ephesians 4:25)
Honouring God requires honesty in our communication.

b) Speak Grace (Colossians 4:6)
Our words should be gracious and appropriate.

c) Avoid Corrupt Communication (Ephesians 4:29)
Believers should reject words that damage others.

d) Control Your Tongue (James 1:26)
Religious activity becomes meaningless when the tongue remains uncontrolled.

Biblical Example: Isaiah recognised the need for purification of his lips before entering deeper into God's service (Isaiah 6:5-7).

4. HONOUR GOD THROUGH YOUR WORK

Work is also an opportunity to glorify God.

a) Work Wholeheartedly (Colossians 3:23)
Whatever we do should be done sincerely as unto the Lord.

b) Be Diligent (Proverbs 22:29)
Excellence and diligence can bring honour to God.

c) Be Honest (Proverbs 11:1)
God is concerned about integrity in business and daily dealings.

d) Serve Faithfully (Colossians 3:24)
Remember that ultimately we are serving Christ.

Biblical Example: Daniel distinguished himself through excellence, integrity, and faithfulness in his responsibilities (Daniel 6:3-4).

5. HONOUR GOD IN YOUR RELATIONSHIPS

Our treatment of people reflects our relationship with God.

a) Walk In Love (John 13:34-35)
Christlike love should characterise our relationships.

b) Honour Others (Romans 12:10)
Believers should value and respect one another.

c) Forgive Others (Colossians 3:13)
Forgiveness reflects God's grace towards us.

d) Pursue Peace (Romans 12:18)
We should do everything possible to maintain peaceful relationships.

Biblical Example: Joseph demonstrated forgiveness towards his brothers rather than seeking revenge for their past actions (Genesis 50:19-21).

6. HONOUR GOD WITH YOUR BODY

Our bodies belong to God.

a) Your Body Is God's Temple (1 Corinthians 6:19)
The Holy Spirit dwells within believers.

b) Glorify God In Your Body (1 Corinthians 6:20)
Our physical lives should honour the One who purchased us.

c) Practise Moral Purity (1 Thessalonians 4:3-4)
Sexual purity is part of Christian holiness.

d) Present Your Body To God (Romans 12:1)
Our bodies should be dedicated to God's service.

Biblical Example: Joseph chose purity when confronted with sexual temptation rather than dishonouring God (Genesis 39:7-12).

7. HONOUR GOD WITH YOUR RESOURCES

How we handle what God gives us reveals our priorities.

a) Honour God With Your Substance (Proverbs 3:9)
Our resources should acknowledge God as the source of our provision.

b) Give Generously (2 Corinthians 9:7)
God values cheerful and willing generosity.

c) Avoid The Love Of Money (1 Timothy 6:9-10)
Money must remain a servant rather than becoming a master.

d) Be A Faithful Steward (Luke 16:10-12)
God expects faithfulness in what He entrusts to us.

Biblical Example: Barnabas demonstrated generosity by willingly giving from his possessions to support the needs of believers (Acts 4:36-37).

8. HONOUR GOD IN EVERY CIRCUMSTANCE

Our worship should not depend on favourable conditions.

a) Trust God In Difficulties (Proverbs 3:5-6)
Honouring God means trusting Him even when we do not understand.

b) Give Thanks In All Things (1 Thessalonians 5:18)
Gratitude keeps our hearts focused on God's faithfulness.

c) Maintain Your Testimony Under Pressure (1 Peter 2:12)
Our conduct during adversity can influence unbelievers.

d) Remain Faithful Until The End (Revelation 2:10)
God deserves our faithfulness in every season.

Biblical Example: Job continued to acknowledge God's sovereignty despite tremendous loss and suffering (Job 1:20-22).

CONCLUSION

Honouring God in daily living means recognising that there is no area of life that is outside His interest. Our worship, work, family life, friendships, business dealings, speech, thoughts, finances, bodies, and private decisions can all bring glory to God. Christianity is not merely something we practise in church; it is a lifestyle we live every day.

Therefore, let us ask ourselves before making every significant decision: “Will this honour God?” Let that question guide our conduct. May our lives become living testimonies that cause people to see Christ in us. Whether we eat, drink, work, serve, speak, give, or relate with others, may everything we do bring glory to God.
