Description: Believers are called to live in holiness, spiritual alertness, and Christlikeness as they eagerly await the return of the Lord.
INTRODUCTION
In Romans 13:11-14, the Apostle Paul reminds believers that the Christian life must be lived with a sense of urgency because the day of Christ's return is drawing nearer. Salvation has already been received through faith in Christ, yet the final fulfilment of our redemption is approaching. Therefore, believers must remain spiritually awake, vigilant, and committed to holy living.
Paul contrasts two ways of life: the works of darkness and the armour of light. The works of darkness represent sinful attitudes, immoral behaviour, and worldly living, while the armour of light symbolises righteousness, purity, and obedience to Christ. Every believer must intentionally reject the lifestyle of darkness and embrace the light of God's truth.
Walking in the light is more than avoiding sin; it is living daily under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. As believers clothe themselves with Christ, they become living testimonies of God's transforming grace and shining lights in a spiritually dark world.
1. LIVE WITH SPIRITUAL URGENCY
Believers must recognise the importance of preparing daily for Christ's return.
a) Awake From Spiritual Sleep (Romans 13:11)
Spiritual complacency weakens faith, but spiritual alertness keeps believers ready for the coming of the Lord.
b) Recognise The Nearness Of Christ's Return (Matthew 24:42-44)
Every day should be lived with joyful expectation and faithful obedience.
c) Redeem The Time Wisely (Ephesians 5:15-16)
Use every opportunity to serve God because life is short and eternity is certain.
d) Remain Watchful In Prayer (Luke 21:36)
A consistent prayer life keeps believers spiritually prepared and discerning.
Biblical Example: The Wise Virgins (Matthew 25:1-13). The wise virgins remained prepared for the bridegroom's arrival, illustrating the importance of continual spiritual readiness.
2. CAST OFF THE WORKS OF DARKNESS
Followers of Christ must deliberately reject sinful lifestyles.
a) Reject Every Form Of Sin (Romans 13:12)
Believers must turn away from every practice that dishonours God.
b) Forsake Immorality And Impurity (Romans 13:13)
Sexual immorality, drunkenness, and reckless living have no place in the life of a Christian.
c) Avoid Strife And Envy (Romans 13:13)
Jealousy, quarrelling, and division hinder spiritual growth and damage Christian fellowship.
d) Walk In Holiness (1 Peter 1:15-16)
God calls His people to reflect His holy character in every aspect of life.
Biblical Example: Joseph (Genesis 39:7-12). Joseph refused the temptation of Potiphar's wife and chose holiness rather than temporary pleasure.
3. PUT ON THE ARMOUR OF LIGHT
Believers must intentionally embrace a Christ-centred lifestyle.
a) Walk As Children Of Light (Ephesians 5:8-10)
Those who belong to Christ should display goodness, righteousness, and truth.
b) Put On The Character Of Christ (Colossians 3:12-14)
Compassion, humility, kindness, patience, and love should mark every believer.
c) Be Led By The Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:16)
Walking in the Spirit enables believers to overcome the desires of the flesh.
d) Shine Before The World (Matthew 5:14-16)
A godly life becomes a powerful witness that points others to Jesus Christ.
Biblical Example: Daniel (Daniel 6:3-5). Daniel's righteous character and unwavering devotion to God distinguished him from everyone around him and brought glory to God.
4. PUT ON THE LORD JESUS CHRIST
Christlikeness is the ultimate goal of the Christian life.
a) Clothe Yourself With Christ (Romans 13:14)
Every believer should reflect the attitudes, character, and priorities of Jesus.
b) Make No Provision For The Flesh (Romans 13:14)
Avoid situations and habits that encourage sinful desires.
c) Grow In Spiritual Maturity (2 Peter 3:18)
Continually develop in grace, knowledge, and obedience to Christ.
d) Live For God's Glory (1 Corinthians 10:31)
Every action should honour God and advance His Kingdom.
Biblical Example: The Apostle Paul (Philippians 3:7-14). Paul laid aside worldly ambitions and pursued a life completely devoted to knowing and serving Jesus Christ.
CONCLUSION
Romans 13:11-14 is a powerful call to spiritual alertness and holy living. As the return of Christ draws nearer, believers must reject the works of darkness, put on the armour of light, and clothe themselves with the Lord Jesus Christ. The Christian life is not one of compromise but of continual transformation through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Therefore, let every believer walk daily in the light of God's Word. Live with eternity in view, pursue holiness without compromise, and shine as a faithful witness in a dark world. As you walk in the light, you will experience deeper fellowship with God, greater spiritual victory, and readiness for the glorious return of our Lord Jesus Christ.
