THE STRUGGLE WITH SIN

INTRODUCTION
Romans 7:7-25 is one of the most personal and revealing passages in Paul's writings. Here, the Apostle openly describes the inner struggle between the desire to obey God and the influence of the sinful nature. He explains that while God's Law is holy and good, it exposes the reality of sin within the human heart. This passage reminds believers that the Christian life is a spiritual battle requiring complete dependence upon God's grace.

Every genuine believer experiences this conflict. The desire to please God is often challenged by the weaknesses of the flesh. There are moments when we know what is right yet struggle to do it. This does not mean that God's grace has failed, but it demonstrates the reality of spiritual warfare and the necessity of relying on the Holy Spirit rather than human strength.

Paul concludes this passage with a triumphant declaration that deliverance comes through Jesus Christ. While the struggle with sin is real, it is not the believer's final destination. In Christ there is victory, freedom, and the power to live a life that pleases God.

1. GOD'S LAW REVEALS THE REALITY OF SIN
The Law is holy and good because it exposes sin and reveals humanity's need for God's grace.

a) The Law Makes Sin Known (Romans 7:7)
Without God's commandments, people would not fully recognise the seriousness of sin.

b) Sin Takes Opportunity Through The Commandment (Romans 7:8)
The sinful nature rebels against God's commands and seeks to produce disobedience.

c) The Law Is Holy, Just, And Good (Romans 7:12)
The problem is not with God's Law but with the sinful nature of humanity.

d) The Law Leads Us To Christ (Galatians 3:24)
By exposing our guilt, the Law points us to Jesus, the only Saviour.

Biblical Example: King David (2 Samuel 12:1-13). When the prophet Nathan confronted David with God's Word, David recognised his sin, repented sincerely, and sought God's mercy.

2. THE BELIEVER EXPERIENCES AN INNER CONFLICT
The new nature desires to obey God, while the flesh continually opposes His will.

a) The Desire To Do Good Exists (Romans 7:18)
The regenerated heart longs to please God and walk in righteousness.

b) The Flesh Resists Obedience (Romans 7:18-19)
The sinful nature constantly opposes spiritual growth and holy living.

c) There Is A War Within (Romans 7:23)
The mind delights in God's Law, yet the flesh seeks to lead believers into sin.

d) Victory Requires Dependence Upon God (Galatians 5:17)
Only through the Holy Spirit can believers overcome the desires of the flesh.

Biblical Example: Peter (Matthew 26:69-75). Although Peter sincerely loved Jesus, he denied Him because he relied upon his own strength instead of God's power.

3. HUMAN EFFORT CANNOT DEFEAT SIN
No amount of self-discipline or determination can completely overcome the sinful nature apart from God's grace.

a) The Flesh Is Weak (Matthew 26:41)
Human strength alone cannot withstand spiritual temptation.

b) Sin Produces Spiritual Frustration (Romans 7:24)
Trying to overcome sin without God's power leads to discouragement and failure.

c) God Provides A Way Of Escape (1 Corinthians 10:13)
The Lord faithfully provides strength and escape from every temptation.

d) Grace Is Greater Than Human Weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9)
God's grace supplies the strength believers need to overcome daily struggles.

Biblical Example: Samson (Judges 16:15-21). Samson depended upon his own strength instead of maintaining his spiritual devotion, leading to defeat and captivity.

4. VICTORY OVER SIN IS FOUND IN JESUS CHRIST
Christ alone delivers believers from the power of sin and enables them to live victoriously.

a) Jesus Is Our Deliverer (Romans 7:25)
Deliverance from sin comes through the finished work of Jesus Christ.

b) Walk In The Spirit (Romans 8:1-4)
The Holy Spirit empowers believers to overcome the desires of the flesh.

c) Confess And Forsake Sin (1 John 1:9)
God faithfully forgives and cleanses those who sincerely repent.

d) Continue Growing In Holiness (Philippians 3:12-14)
Spiritual maturity is a lifelong journey of continual dependence upon Christ.

Biblical Example: The Apostle Paul (2 Timothy 4:7-8). Despite many struggles and hardships, Paul remained faithful to Christ and finished his race victoriously through God's sustaining grace.

CONCLUSION
Romans 7:7-25 teaches that the struggle with sin is a reality in the life of every believer. God's Law exposes sin, the flesh opposes the Spirit, and human effort alone cannot produce lasting victory. Yet believers are not left in despair, because Jesus Christ has provided complete deliverance through His death and resurrection.

As followers of Christ, we must daily surrender to the Holy Spirit, reject confidence in our own strength, and depend upon God's grace. When we walk closely with Christ, confess our failures, and remain obedient to His Word, we shall experience increasing victory over sin and grow into the likeness of our Saviour.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, thank You for revealing my need for Your grace through Your holy Word, in Jesus name.

2. Lord Jesus, deliver me completely from every power of sin that seeks to rule over my life, in Jesus name.

3. Father, strengthen me to overcome every temptation through the power of the Holy Spirit, in Jesus name.

4. Lord, help me never to rely upon my own strength but upon Your sufficient grace, in Jesus name.

5. Father, give me victory over every secret struggle and hidden weakness, in Jesus name.

6. Lord, let Your Word continually transform my mind and renew my heart, in Jesus name.

7. Father, produce in me the fruit of holiness and Christ-like character, in Jesus name.

8. Lord, preserve me from falling into sin and restore me quickly whenever I stumble, in Jesus name.

9. Father, help me to walk daily in obedience and dependence upon the Holy Spirit, in Jesus name.

10. Lord, grant me the grace to finish my Christian race faithfully and victoriously, in Jesus name.

PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS

1. You shall overcome every struggle with sin through the power of Jesus Christ.

2. The Holy Spirit shall strengthen you daily to walk in holiness and righteousness.

3. Every habit, addiction, and sinful bondage shall be broken over your life in the name of Jesus.

4. You shall no longer depend upon your own strength but upon God's abundant grace.

5. Every temptation assigned to destroy your destiny shall become an opportunity for spiritual victory.

6. The Word of God shall continually renew your mind and transform your life.

7. You shall grow in spiritual maturity and reflect the character of Christ more each day.

8. The Lord shall preserve you from every attack of the enemy against your faith.

9. Your testimony of victory over sin shall encourage many people to trust in Jesus Christ.

10. From this day forward, you shall walk in continual victory through Christ, overcome every work of the flesh, fulfil God's purpose for your life, and finish your race with joy and eternal reward, in the mighty name of Jesus.
