THE WIDOW OF ZAREPHATH
By Rev. Samuel Arimoro
Main Text: 1 Kings 17:8-16
"And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee. So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink... And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse... And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first... For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail... And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days." (1 Kings 17:8-16, KJV)
Key Verse: "For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail..." (1 Kings 17:14)
Supporting Texts: Luke 4:25-26; Philippians 4:19; 2 Corinthians 9:6-8; Hebrews 11:1; Matthew 6:31-33; Psalm 37:25.
Description: God uses divine encounters to turn scarcity into abundance and teach believers the power of faith, obedience, and trust in His provision.
INTRODUCTION
The story of the widow of Zarephath is one of the clearest demonstrations of God's supernatural provision during seasons of hardship. Israel was experiencing a severe famine because of the nation's disobedience, and survival had become extremely difficult. Yet in the midst of widespread lack, God prepared a miracle for a poor widow who was on the verge of hopelessness.
This widow had reached the end of her resources. She possessed only a handful of meal and a little oil, enough for what she believed would be her final meal before death. Humanly speaking, her situation appeared impossible. However, one encounter with God's prophet changed the direction of her life completely.
God still specialises in meeting people at the point of their greatest need. When believers trust Him, obey His instructions, and place Him first, He demonstrates His faithfulness in remarkable ways. Divine encounters often become the doorway to supernatural provision and lasting testimonies.
1. GOD KNOWS YOUR NEED BEFORE YOU ASK
God is fully aware of every challenge His people face. He prepares solutions even before the problem becomes overwhelming.
a) God Sees Your Situation Clearly (1 Kings 17:9)
Before Elijah arrived, God had already prepared the widow for divine provision. Nothing catches God by surprise.
b) God Cares For His Children (Matthew 6:31-32)
Jesus taught that our heavenly Father knows our needs and lovingly provides for those who trust Him.
c) God Works Through Unexpected Channels (Isaiah 55:8-9)
The widow probably never imagined that her miracle would come through hosting a prophet during famine.
d) God's Provision Is Never Limited By Circumstances (Philippians 4:19)
Economic hardship, scarcity, or human limitations cannot stop God's ability to provide for His people.
Biblical Example: Hagar (Genesis 21:14-19). When Hagar and Ishmael faced death in the wilderness, God opened her eyes to see a well of water already prepared for them.
2. DIVINE ENCOUNTERS REQUIRE FAITH AND OBEDIENCE
Miracles often begin where human reasoning ends. God expects His people to trust Him even when His instructions appear difficult.
a) Faith Responds To God's Word (Hebrews 11:1)
The widow chose to believe Elijah's prophetic word despite her desperate condition.
b) Obedience Unlocks Divine Provision (1 Kings 17:15)
Her miracle began when she obeyed the instruction to prepare food for Elijah first.
c) Put God First In Everything (Matthew 6:33)
Those who prioritise God's Kingdom experience His supernatural care and provision.
d) Fear Must Be Replaced With Trust (1 Kings 17:13)
Elijah told the widow, "Fear not." Faith cannot flourish where fear dominates the heart.
Biblical Example: Peter (Luke 5:4-7). Although he had caught nothing all night, Peter obeyed Jesus' instruction to cast the net again and experienced miraculous provision.
3. GOD SPECIALISES IN SUPERNATURAL PROVISION
One encounter with God can turn insufficiency into abundance. His resources never run dry.
a) God Multiplies What Is Surrendered To Him (1 Kings 17:16)
The little meal and oil became an unending supply because it was committed to God's purpose.
b) Small Beginnings Can Produce Great Miracles (Zechariah 4:10)
God often begins miracles with what appears insignificant in human eyes.
c) God Sustains His People Through Difficult Seasons (Psalm 37:25)
The Lord remains faithful even during famine, hardship, and uncertainty.
d) Trust God's Timing And Method (Ecclesiastes 3:11)
God's provision may not come the way we expect, but it always arrives at the right time.
Biblical Example: The feeding of the five thousand (John 6:5-13). Jesus multiplied five loaves and two fishes to feed a great multitude, proving that God's supply is unlimited.
4. DIVINE ENCOUNTERS PRODUCE LASTING TESTIMONIES
God performs miracles not only to meet immediate needs but also to strengthen faith and reveal His glory.
a) Your Testimony Will Encourage Others (Psalm 66:16)
The widow's story continues to inspire believers to trust God's provision.
b) God Uses Trials To Strengthen Faith (James 1:2-4)
Difficult seasons often deepen believers' dependence upon God.
c) God's Faithfulness Brings Lasting Confidence (Lamentations 3:22–23)
Experiencing God's provision builds greater trust in His promises.
d) Your Encounter Can Influence Generations (Luke 4:25-26)
Jesus later referenced the widow of Zarephath as an example of faith and divine favour.
Biblical Example: Hannah (1 Samuel 1:9-20). After encountering God in prayer, Hannah received the miracle of Samuel and became a testimony of God's faithfulness.
CONCLUSION
The widow of Zarephath teaches us that God remains faithful even in the most difficult situations. When human resources fail, divine provision begins. Her encounter with God transformed despair into hope, scarcity into abundance, and fear into unwavering faith.
No matter what challenge you may be facing today, trust that God knows your needs and is able to provide beyond your expectations. As you obey His voice, place Him first, and walk in faith, you will discover that the God who sustained the widow of Zarephath is still working miracles today.
