Description: Love is the continuing obligation of every believer and the fulfilment of God's moral law in our relationships with others.
INTRODUCTION
In Romans 13:8-10, the Apostle Paul moves from teaching about civic responsibilities to the believer's continual obligation towards fellow human beings. While financial debts should be settled responsibly, there is one debt that can never be fully repaid, the debt of love. Every Christian is called to love others continually because God first loved us through Jesus Christ.
Biblical love is not merely an emotion or an occasional act of kindness. It is a deliberate commitment to seek the welfare of others, regardless of personal convenience or circumstances. Genuine Christian love reflects the character of Christ and becomes the evidence of a transformed heart. It governs our attitudes, words, actions, and decisions.
Paul teaches that love fulfils the law because a person who truly loves others will naturally avoid actions that cause harm. Love prevents murder, adultery, stealing, false witness, covetousness, and every form of injustice. Therefore, love is not a replacement for holiness but the very expression of God's righteousness in the life of a believer.
1. LOVE IS A CONTINUAL CHRISTIAN OBLIGATION
Love is the one debt every believer must continually repay.
a) Love Is A Permanent Responsibility (Romans 13:8)
Unlike financial obligations that can be settled, the responsibility to love others continues throughout our lives.
b) God Loved Us First (1 John 4:19)
Our ability to love others flows from experiencing God's love through Christ.
c) Love Is The Evidence Of Discipleship (John 13:34-35)
The world recognises genuine followers of Jesus by the love they demonstrate.
d) Love Must Be Demonstrated Daily (1 John 3:18)
Christian love is shown through practical actions, truthful speech, and sincere concern for others.
Biblical Example: The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30-37). The Samaritan demonstrated genuine love by helping an injured stranger without expecting recognition or reward.
2. LOVE FULFILS GOD'S LAW
True love naturally leads to obedience to God's commands.
a) Love Prevents Harm (Romans 13:9-10)
A person who truly loves others will avoid causing them injury or suffering.
b) Love Summarises God's Commandments (Matthew 22:37-40)
The entire law is fulfilled through loving God wholeheartedly and loving our neighbour as ourselves.
c) Love Seeks Another Person's Good (Philippians 2:3-4)
Christian love places the welfare of others above selfish ambition.
d) Love Reflects God's Character (1 John 4:7-8)
Because God is love, His children are called to reflect His nature.
Biblical Example: Boaz (Ruth 2:8-16; 4:9-10). Boaz demonstrated love, kindness, and integrity by caring for Ruth and honouring God's law in redeeming her family.
3. LOVE MUST BE SINCERE AND PRACTICAL
Christian love goes beyond words into visible acts of compassion.
a) Serve One Another In Love (Galatians 5:13)
Believers should willingly use their lives to serve others with humility.
b) Forgive One Another (Ephesians 4:31-32)
Love chooses forgiveness instead of bitterness or revenge.
c) Bear One Another's Burdens (Galatians 6:2)
Helping others through their struggles fulfils the law of Christ.
d) Show Hospitality And Generosity (Hebrews 13:1-2)
Love welcomes, shares, and cares for those in need.
Biblical Example: The Early Church (Acts 2:44-47). The believers expressed genuine love by sharing their possessions, caring for one another, and living in joyful unity.
4. LOVE IS THE GREATEST WITNESS TO THE WORLD
The Gospel becomes visible when believers genuinely love one another.
a) Love Displays Christ To The World (John 13:35)
The love among believers testifies to the transforming power of the Gospel.
b) Overcome Evil With Good (Romans 12:21)
Love responds to hostility with kindness and grace.
c) Let Love Produce Unity (Colossians 3:14)
Love binds believers together in perfect harmony and spiritual maturity.
d) Remain Constant In Love (1 Corinthians 13:13)
Faith and hope are essential, but love remains the greatest Christian virtue.
Biblical Example: Jesus Christ (John 13:1-17). Jesus demonstrated perfect love by humbly washing His disciples' feet and ultimately giving His life on the cross for the salvation of humanity.
CONCLUSION
Romans 13:8-10 teaches that love is the believer's lifelong obligation. While earthly debts should be settled responsibly, the debt of love continues every day because God continually pours His love into our hearts. Genuine Christian love fulfils God's law, strengthens relationships, promotes unity, and reveals the character of Christ to the world.
Therefore, let every believer intentionally walk in love through words, attitudes, and actions. Love sincerely, forgive generously, serve humbly, and seek the good of others. As you continually pay the debt of love, your life will become a powerful testimony of God's grace, and many people will be drawn to Jesus Christ through your example.
