ISAIAH'S ENCOUNTER WITH GOD'S HOLINESS
By Rev. Samuel Arimoro
Main Text: Isaiah 6:1-8
"In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke. Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts. Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged. Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me." (Isaiah 6:1-8, KJV)
Key Verse: "Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me." (Isaiah 6:8)
Supporting Texts: Exodus 3:1-12; Hebrews 12:14; 1 Peter 1:15-16; Matthew 5:8; 2 Corinthians 7:1; Revelation 4:8-11.
Description: A genuine encounter with God's holiness brings conviction, cleansing, transformation, and a fresh commitment to His service.
INTRODUCTION
One of the greatest needs of the Church today is a fresh revelation of the holiness of God. Many people seek God's blessings, power, and miracles, yet few pursue an intimate encounter with His holy presence. Isaiah's vision reminds us that God is not only loving and merciful but also infinitely holy and worthy of reverence.
Isaiah's encounter took place during a period of national uncertainty following the death of King Uzziah. While an earthly throne had become vacant, Isaiah saw that Heaven's throne remained occupied. God was still reigning in majesty, proving that human circumstances never diminish His sovereignty.
This divine encounter transformed Isaiah's entire life. He moved from recognising his own sinfulness to receiving God's cleansing, and from being a spectator in God's presence to becoming a willing messenger. Every believer who encounters God's holiness will experience conviction, purification, and a renewed passion to fulfil His purpose.
1. A DIVINE ENCOUNTER REVEALS THE MAJESTY OF GOD
Before God changes our lives, He reveals His greatness. A true vision of God's glory produces reverence, worship, and complete surrender.
a) God Is Exalted Above All (Isaiah 6:1)
Isaiah saw the Lord seated upon a high and exalted throne. God's authority remains supreme over every kingdom, circumstance, and generation.
b) God's Glory Fills His Presence (Isaiah 6:1)
The train of His robe filled the temple, symbolising His majesty, authority, and overwhelming glory.
c) Heaven Constantly Worships God (Isaiah 6:2–3)
The seraphim continually declared, "Holy, holy, holy," reminding us that worship is the appropriate response to God's greatness.
d) God Alone Deserves Our Highest Honour (Revelation 4:11)
Because He created all things, He alone deserves our worship, obedience, and complete devotion.
Biblical Example: John on the Isle of Patmos (Revelation 1:12-18). When John saw the glorified Christ, he fell at His feet in reverence, overwhelmed by His majesty.
2. GOD'S HOLINESS EXPOSES OUR TRUE CONDITION
A genuine encounter with God's holiness always reveals the true condition of the human heart. Before God can use us, He first deals with our sin.
a) God's Light Exposes Sin (Isaiah 6:5)
Isaiah immediately recognised his uncleanness because he had seen the holiness of God.
b) True Repentance Begins With Honest Confession (1 John 1:9)
Confessing our sins allows us to receive God's forgiveness and cleansing.
c) Holiness Is God's Standard (1 Peter 1:15-16)
God calls His people to reflect His holy character in every aspect of life.
d) Purity Opens The Way To Fellowship With God (Matthew 5:8)
Those with pure hearts enjoy deeper intimacy and clearer spiritual vision.
Biblical Example: Peter (Luke 5:8). After witnessing the miraculous catch of fish, Peter fell before Jesus and confessed his sinfulness, recognising Christ's holiness.
3. GOD CLEANSES THOSE WHO SURRENDER TO HIM
God never reveals sin simply to condemn His people. He exposes sin in order to cleanse, restore, and prepare them for greater usefulness.
a) God Provides Cleansing Through His Grace (Isaiah 6:6-7)
The live coal from the altar symbolised God's provision for forgiveness and purification.
b) Christ Is Our Perfect Sacrifice (Hebrews 9:13-14)
The blood of Jesus cleanses believers from sin and enables them to serve the living God.
c) The Holy Spirit Continues The Work Of Sanctification (2 Corinthians 7:1)
God continually transforms His people into Christ's likeness as they submit to His Spirit.
d) God Restores Those Who Return To Him (Joel 2:25-27)
The Lord delights in restoring repentant hearts and renewing broken lives.
Biblical Example: David (Psalm 51). After his repentance, David experienced God's forgiveness and prayed for a clean heart and renewed spirit.
4. EVERY DIVINE ENCOUNTER LEADS TO DIVINE COMMISSIONING
God does not reveal Himself merely to bless His people; He reveals Himself to send them into His service. Every genuine encounter carries a Kingdom assignment.
a) God Calls Willing Servants (Isaiah 6:8)
God asked, "Whom shall I send?" He still seeks willing men and women to represent Him in the world.
b) Availability Is More Important Than Ability (Exodus 4:10-12)
God equips those who willingly answer His call, regardless of their perceived weaknesses.
c) God Sends His People With Authority (Matthew 28:18-20)
Those commissioned by Christ go with His authority to make disciples of all nations.
d) Faithfulness Brings Eternal Reward (1 Corinthians 4:2)
God requires His servants to remain faithful in fulfilling the assignments entrusted to them.
Biblical Example: Jeremiah (Jeremiah 1:4-10). Though he felt inadequate, God touched his mouth, commissioned him, and promised to be with him throughout his ministry.
CONCLUSION
Isaiah's encounter with God's holiness teaches us that genuine revival begins with a fresh vision of God. When believers recognise His majesty, acknowledge their sin, receive His cleansing, and respond to His call, their lives become powerful instruments in His hands. God is still looking for people whose hearts are completely surrendered to Him.
Today, God continues to ask, "Whom shall I send?" May your response be like Isaiah's: "Here am I; send me." As you pursue holiness and intimacy with God, He will purify your life, empower your ministry, and use you mightily to advance His Kingdom.
