Key Verse: “And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” — Ephesians 2:6

Description: Being seated with Christ in heavenly places speaks of the believer’s spiritual position, authority, identity and victory in Christ. Through salvation, we are raised from spiritual death, united with Christ and given access to the blessings and authority of His heavenly kingdom.

INTRODUCTION

The Christian life is not merely about receiving forgiveness or escaping judgment. It is also about being brought into a new position in Christ. Ephesians 2:6 declares that God has “raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.”

Before this declaration, Paul describes humanity as dead in trespasses and sins, walking according to the course of this world and living under the influence of disobedience. But God, who is rich in mercy and great in love, made us alive with Christ, raised us with Him and seated us with Him in heavenly places.

To be seated with Christ does not mean that believers are physically absent from the earth. It means that our spiritual position, identity and source of authority are now connected to the risen and exalted Christ. We live on earth, but our citizenship, values, power and hope come from heaven.

A seated position speaks of rest, completion, authority and victory. Christ has finished the work of redemption, and those who belong to Him share in the benefits of His triumph. We are no longer slaves to sin, prisoners of fear or victims of the enemy. In Christ, we have been given a new position and a new way of living.

1. BEING SEATED WITH CHRIST SPEAKS OF A NEW SPIRITUAL POSITION

Our position in Christ is not based on human achievement but on God's grace. We were once dead in sin, but God raised us together with Christ.

a) We have been brought from death to life (Ephesians 2:1-5) – Salvation gives us spiritual life and restores our relationship with God.

b) We have been transferred into Christ's kingdom (Colossians 1:13) – God has delivered us from the power of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of His beloved Son.

c) We are accepted in Christ (Ephesians 1:6) – Our standing before God is based on Christ's righteousness, not our own perfection.

d) We are new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17) – In Christ, the old life has passed away and a new life has begun.

Biblical Example: The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-24) – The son returned in shame and brokenness, but the father restored him to a position of sonship. In the same way, God does not merely forgive us; He restores us to fellowship and dignity through Christ.

2. BEING SEATED WITH CHRIST SPEAKS OF REST

A seated position indicates that the work has been completed. Christ finished the work of redemption through His death and resurrection, and believers rest in what He has accomplished.

a) Christ completed the work of salvation (John 19:30) – Jesus declared, “It is finished,” showing that the price for redemption had been fully paid.

b) We rest from self-righteousness (Philippians 3:9) – Our acceptance with God does not come from our works but through faith in Christ.

c) We rest from fear and condemnation (Romans 8:1) – There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

d) We rest in God's faithfulness (Hebrews 4:9-11) – Believers are called to enter God's rest by trusting His promises and refusing unbelief.

Biblical Example: Mary at Jesus' Feet (Luke 10:38-42) – While Martha was troubled by many things, Mary sat at Jesus' feet and received from Him. Her posture teaches us the importance of resting in Christ's presence and prioritizing fellowship with Him.

3. BEING SEATED WITH CHRIST SPEAKS OF AUTHORITY

Christ is seated far above every principality, power and spiritual force. Because we are united with Him, we share in His victory and exercise spiritual authority under His lordship.

a) Christ is above every power (Ephesians 1:20-21) – Jesus is exalted above every rule, authority, power and dominion.

b) Believers have authority over the power of the enemy (Luke 10:19) – Christ gives His followers authority to stand against the works of darkness.

c) We overcome through Christ's victory (Romans 8:37) – We are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.

d) We must use spiritual weapons (2 Corinthians 10:3-5) – Our warfare is spiritual, and God has given us weapons that are mighty for pulling down strongholds.

Biblical Example: David and Goliath (1 Samuel 17:45-50) – David did not approach Goliath in his own strength. He stood in the authority of the name of the Lord and defeated an enemy who appeared stronger than him.

4. BEING SEATED WITH CHRIST MEANS WE HAVE A HEAVENLY IDENTITY

Our identity is no longer defined by our past, failures, background or the opinions of people. We are identified with Christ and belong to the family of God.

a) We are children of God (John 1:12) – Those who receive Christ are given the right to become God's children.

b) We are citizens of heaven (Philippians 3:20) – Our ultimate citizenship is in heaven, and we await the return of our Savior.

c) We are God's chosen people (1 Peter 2:9) – We are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation and God's special possession.

d) We are heirs with Christ (Romans 8:16-17) – As God's children, we share in the inheritance and glory of Christ.

Biblical Example: Mephibosheth (2 Samuel 9:1-13) – Though he was crippled and living in obscurity, Mephibosheth was brought to the king's table because of David's covenant. In Christ, we are brought into fellowship and given a place of honor because of God's grace.

5. BEING SEATED WITH CHRIST REQUIRES A HEAVENLY MINDSET

Our position is heavenly, so our thoughts, desires and conduct must reflect our relationship with Christ.

a) Seek the things above (Colossians 3:1-2) – Since we have been raised with Christ, we must set our minds on things above.

b) Refuse to be controlled by worldly values (Romans 12:2) – We must be transformed by the renewing of our minds.

c) Live as representatives of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20) – We are ambassadors for Christ and must reflect His character.

d) Pursue holiness and spiritual maturity (Hebrews 12:14) – Our heavenly position should produce a life that is separated unto God.

Biblical Example: Daniel (Daniel 1:8-20) – Daniel lived in Babylon but refused to adopt its ungodly values. His life demonstrates that believers can live in the world without being controlled by the spirit of the world.

6. BEING SEATED WITH CHRIST GIVES US VICTORY IN SPIRITUAL BATTLES

The believer's victory is rooted in Christ's triumph. We do not fight for victory as though the outcome is uncertain; we stand in the victory Christ has already won.

a) Christ defeated the powers of darkness (Colossians 2:15) – Jesus disarmed principalities and powers and triumphed over them through the cross.

b) We overcome through faith (1 John 5:4) – Faith in Christ enables us to overcome the world.

c) We resist the devil through submission to God (James 4:7) – Victory requires that we submit to God and resist the enemy.

d) We stand firm in the armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18) – God's armor equips us to withstand spiritual attacks.

Biblical Example: Jehoshaphat (2 Chronicles 20:1-22) – When Judah faced a powerful enemy, the people sought God, worshiped Him and trusted His word. God gave them victory without relying on human strength.

7. BEING SEATED WITH CHRIST GIVES US HOPE FOR THE FUTURE

Our present position in Christ points to a glorious future. We are seated with Him spiritually now, and one day we will share fully in His eternal glory.

a) We will appear with Christ in glory (Colossians 3:4) – When Christ appears, those who belong to Him will share in His glory.

b) We have an eternal inheritance (1 Peter 1:3-4) – Our inheritance is incorruptible, undefiled and reserved in heaven.

c) We will reign with Christ (Revelation 3:21) – Those who overcome will share in Christ's victorious reign.

d) We have an eternal home with God (John 14:1-3) – Jesus has prepared a place for His people and will receive them to Himself.

Biblical Example: Stephen (Acts 7:54-60) – In the face of persecution and death, Stephen saw the heavens opened and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. His vision gave him courage to remain faithful until the end.

CONCLUSION

To be seated with Christ in heavenly places is to possess a new position, a new identity, a new authority and a new hope. We were once dead in sin, but God made us alive with Christ. We were once far from Him, but He brought us near. We were once under the dominion of darkness, but He transferred us into the kingdom of His Son.

Our earthly circumstances do not define our spiritual position. We may face trials, opposition, weakness and uncertainty, but we are seated with Christ above every power and authority. Our victory is not based on what we see but on what Christ has accomplished.

Therefore, live from your position in Christ. Rest in His finished work, walk in His authority, set your mind on heavenly things and stand firm in faith. You are not abandoned, defeated or without hope. In Christ, you have been raised, accepted and seated in heavenly places.
