FROM DEADNESS TO DESTINY

Main Text: Ephesians 2:1-10

Key Verse: “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” — Ephesians 2:10 (KJV)

Description: This message reveals how God's grace brings a person from spiritual deadness and bondage into salvation, transformation, purpose, good works, and the fulfilment of divine destiny.

INTRODUCTION

Ephesians 2:1-10 presents one of the most powerful pictures of God's transforming grace in Scripture. Paul begins with the terrible condition of humanity apart from Christ: “dead in trespasses and sins.” Spiritual deadness means separation from God and inability to produce the life that pleases Him. A person can be physically alive, socially successful, educated, wealthy, or influential and still be spiritually dead.

But the passage does not end with deadness. The great turning point comes in verse 4: “But God, who is rich in mercy.” God's mercy intervenes where human strength fails. He makes the spiritually dead alive with Christ, raises them up, and gives them a new position. Salvation is therefore not merely the forgiveness of yesterday's sins; it is God's preparation of a person for a purposeful future.

Verse 10 reveals the destiny of those who have been saved: “We are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works.” This means that God does not save us without a purpose. He brings us out of spiritual deadness so that we can walk in the good works He has prepared for us. The journey is therefore from deadness to life, from life to transformation, and from transformation to destiny.

1. SIN PRODUCES DEADNESS AND SEPARATION FROM GOD

Paul begins by reminding believers of where they came from. Before Christ, they were dead in trespasses and sins. This spiritual deadness affected their relationship with God, their desires, their conduct, and ultimately their destiny.

Sin is more than an occasional mistake; it is a condition that separates humanity from God. Unless Christ intervenes, the sinner remains spiritually unable to fulfil God's original purpose.

a) Dead in Trespasses and Sins (Ephesians 2:1) – Spiritual death describes separation from the life of God. Sin destroys fellowship with God and leaves humanity spiritually helpless.

b) Walking According to the World (Ephesians 2:2) – The sinful world system influences people to live according to values that oppose God's Word. The believer must refuse conformity to those patterns.

c) Controlled by Wrong Desires (Ephesians 2:3) – Before salvation, people lived according to the desires of the flesh and mind. Without divine transformation, these desires can control behaviour and direction.

d) Under the Power of Disobedience (Ephesians 2:2) – Sinful humanity follows the course of disobedience. But Christ breaks that dominion and brings believers into a life of obedience.

Biblical Example: The prodigal son left his father's house and descended into a life of waste and rebellion. His father later said, “For this my son was dead, and is alive again” (Luke 15:24).

2. GOD'S MERCY BRINGS US FROM DEADNESS TO LIFE

The most important words in Ephesians 2 are “But God.” Humanity was dead, but God acted. Humanity was separated, but God provided reconciliation. Humanity was without spiritual strength, but God supplied grace.

Salvation begins with God's mercy and is accomplished through Christ. It is not a reward for human goodness but an expression of divine love.

a) God Is Rich in Mercy (Ephesians 2:4) – God's mercy reaches us when we are undeserving. He does not abandon us to the consequences of our sinful condition.

b) God Loves Us Greatly (Ephesians 2:4) – God's great love moved Him to provide salvation. The cross is the supreme demonstration of that love.

c) God Makes Us Alive with Christ (Ephesians 2:5) – The Gospel brings spiritual resurrection. Those who were dead receive new life through union with Christ.

d) God Saves by Grace (Ephesians 2:5, 8) – Salvation is God's gracious gift. Human works cannot purchase what Christ has freely provided.

Biblical Example: Saul of Tarsus was actively persecuting the Church, but God's mercy encountered him on the road to Damascus. His life changed from persecutor to preacher (Acts 9:1-22).

3. GRACE CHANGES OUR POSITION AND IDENTITY

God does not merely forgive our sins and leave us where He found us. Ephesians 2:6 says that He has “raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” Grace changes our spiritual position.

The person who once lived under condemnation can now live as a child of God. The one who was once separated can now approach God. The one who was spiritually dead can now possess a new identity in Christ.

a) Raised Together with Christ (Ephesians 2:6) – Our union with Christ gives us a new spiritual position. We are no longer defined by our former condition.

b) Seated in Heavenly Places (Ephesians 2:6) – Our spiritual position is connected to the exalted Christ. We now belong to a kingdom greater than this present world.

c) Made New in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17) – Anyone who is in Christ is a new creature. The old identity no longer has the final word.

d) Given a New Family Identity (John 1:12) – Those who receive Christ are given power to become children of God. Our identity is now rooted in our relationship with Him.

Biblical Example: Matthew was once a tax collector, but when Jesus called him, he left his former occupation and followed Christ. His encounter with Jesus gave him a new identity and purpose (Matthew 9:9).

4. GOD SAVES US FOR A DIVINE PURPOSE

Ephesians 2:10 reveals that we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works. Salvation is therefore connected to assignment. God did not rescue us merely so that we could occupy a seat in church; He saved us to become instruments through which His purposes are accomplished.

Every believer has a divine responsibility. There are good works that God has prepared for His people to walk in. Discovering and fulfilling those works is part of walking in destiny.

a) You Are God's Workmanship (Ephesians 2:10) – You are God's creation and God's project. Your value comes from the One who made and redeemed you.

b) You Were Created for Good Works (Ephesians 2:10) – God has specific works of service, love, righteousness, witness, and kingdom advancement prepared for His people.

c) You Were Called to Bear Fruit (John 15:16) – Jesus chose and ordained His disciples to go and bring forth fruit. A fruitful life is part of divine purpose.

d) You Were Created to Glorify God (Matthew 5:16) – Good works should cause people to see God's glory. Our destiny is ultimately about making Christ known.

Biblical Example: Esther was positioned in the palace at a strategic moment so that she could save her people. Mordecai reminded her that she had come to the kingdom “for such a time as this” (Esther 4:14).

5. DESTINY REQUIRES A TRANSFORMED LIFE

God's destiny cannot be fulfilled through the patterns of the old life. Grace saves us, but grace also teaches and transforms us. A person who has moved from deadness to life must learn to walk according to the new nature received in Christ.

Destiny is not merely about reaching a position; it is about becoming the person God designed us to be and accomplishing the works He has prepared for us.

a) Walk in Newness of Life (Romans 6:4) – New life must produce a new lifestyle. Our conduct should reflect the transformation Christ has brought.

b) Renew Your Mind (Romans 12:2) – Destiny requires transformed thinking. God's Word must replace limiting, sinful, and worldly patterns of thought.

c) Develop Spiritual Character (Galatians 5:22-23) – The fruit of the Spirit demonstrates the character necessary for effective kingdom service.

d) Remain Faithful to the End (Matthew 24:13) – Destiny requires perseverance. Many begin well, but those who remain faithful experience the full fruit of God's purpose.

Biblical Example: Joseph passed through betrayal, slavery, false accusation, and imprisonment before reaching the palace. His character and faithfulness were developed during the process (Genesis 39–41).

6. GOD HAS PREPARED GOOD WORKS FOR US TO WALK IN

Ephesians 2:10 says that God has “before ordained” the good works in which believers should walk. This means that divine destiny is not accidental. God has a purpose and assignment for every believer.

However, knowing that God has prepared good works does not mean we should become passive. We must walk in them. Destiny requires obedience, preparation, courage, discipline, faith, and sensitivity to the Holy Spirit.

a) Discover Your Assignment (1 Corinthians 12:18) – God has placed members in the body according to His purpose. You have a place and function in God's kingdom.

b) Develop Your Gifts (2 Timothy 1:6) – Paul instructed Timothy to stir up the gift of God within him. What God gives must be developed and faithfully used.

c) Serve Faithfully (1 Peter 4:10) – Every believer should minister according to the gift received. Your gift is a stewardship entrusted to you by God.

d) Finish Your Course (2 Timothy 4:7) – Paul could say that he had finished his course. Destiny is fulfilled when we remain faithful to God's assignment until the end.

Biblical Example: Paul moved from a persecutor of the Church to an apostle of Christ. He eventually declared, “I have finished my course” (2 Timothy 4:7). His transformation became a powerful testimony of God's purpose.

CONCLUSION

The journey from deadness to destiny begins with God's grace. We were dead in sins, controlled by worldly patterns and sinful desires, but God intervened through His mercy and love. He made us alive with Christ, raised us up, and gave us a new identity and spiritual position. Salvation is therefore God's gracious rescue from spiritual death and His introduction of us into a new life in Christ.

But God did not save you merely to rescue you from something; He saved you for something. You are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works that He has prepared for you. Therefore, reject every mindset that says your past has cancelled your future. Walk with Christ, develop your gifts, obey God's Word, serve faithfully, endure every process, and pursue your divine assignment. You are moving from deadness to destiny.
