INTRODUCTION
The declaration “I am the resurrection and the life” was made by Jesus during one of the most sorrowful moments in the home of Mary and Martha. Their brother Lazarus had died, and the family was grieving deeply. When Jesus arrived in Bethany, Martha expressed her disappointment that He had not come earlier to prevent Lazarus’ death.
In response, Jesus made one of the most profound statements about His divine identity. He did not simply say that He could perform a resurrection; He declared that He is the resurrection and the life. This means that resurrection power is not merely an event but a person—Jesus Christ Himself.
Through this declaration, Jesus revealed His authority over death and His ability to give life both now and eternally. For believers, this truth brings hope in the face of death and assurance that those who trust in Christ will experience eternal life.
1. JESUS IS THE SOURCE OF RESURRECTION POWER
Christ is not only able to raise the dead; He Himself embodies resurrection power.
a. Christ the Firstfruits of the Resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:20)
Jesus’ resurrection guarantees the future resurrection of believers.
b. Authority Over Death (Revelation 1:18)
Jesus holds the keys of death and the grave.
c. Victory Through Christ (1 Corinthians 15:55-57)
Through Christ, believers have victory over death.
d. Life-Giving Power of God (Romans 8:11)
The Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead also gives life to believers.
Biblical Example:
Jesus raised Jairus’ daughter from the dead, demonstrating His authority over death even during His earthly ministry (Mark 5:41-42).
2. JESUS GIVES ETERNAL LIFE TO BELIEVERS
The promise of resurrection is closely connected to the gift of eternal life.
a. Salvation Through Faith in Christ (John 3:16)
Those who believe in Christ receive everlasting life.
b. Passing from Death to Life (John 5:24)
Believers move from spiritual death into spiritual life.
c. New Life Through Christ (Romans 6:4)
Those who follow Christ walk in newness of life.
d. Assurance of Eternal Hope (1 John 5:11-12)
Eternal life is found in the Son of God.
Biblical Example:
The thief on the cross believed in Jesus and received the promise of eternal life that very day (Luke 23:42-43).
3. RESURRECTION POWER BRINGS HOPE IN HOPELESS SITUATIONS
Jesus’ statement brought hope to a family that believed their situation was beyond repair.
a. God Brings Life Out of Death (Romans 4:17)
God calls things that are not as though they were.
b. Hope in the Midst of Grief (1 Thessalonians 4:13-14)
Believers grieve with hope because Christ conquered death.
c. God Specialises in the Impossible (Luke 1:37)
Nothing is impossible with God.
d. Faith That Sees God’s Glory (John 11:40)
Jesus promised that those who believe will see the glory of God.
Biblical Example:
The prophet Elijah raised the widow’s son from the dead through God’s power, showing that God can restore life even in desperate circumstances (1 Kings 17:21-22).
4. BELIEVERS MUST LIVE IN THE POWER OF THE RESURRECTION
The resurrection power of Christ is not only future but also active in the lives of believers today.
a. Living a Transformed Life (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Anyone in Christ becomes a new creation.
b. Walking in Spiritual Victory (Colossians 3:1)
Believers are called to seek things above because they have been raised with Christ.
c. Freedom from Sin (Romans 6:6)
The power of sin is broken through Christ’s resurrection.
d. Hope of Future Glory (Philippians 3:20-21)
Believers look forward to the transformation of their bodies in the resurrection.
Biblical Example:
After encountering the risen Christ, the disciples were transformed from fearful followers into bold witnesses who spread the gospel throughout the world (Acts 4:31-33).
CONCLUSION
Jesus’ declaration, “I am the resurrection and the life,” reveals that He is the source of eternal life and the conqueror of death. Through His resurrection, believers have the assurance that death is not the end but the doorway to eternal life with God.
This truth also gives believers hope in the present. The same power that raised Christ from the dead works in the lives of those who believe in Him. No situation is too hopeless for the transforming power of Christ.
Believers must therefore live with confidence, knowing that the resurrection power of Jesus brings victory, hope, and eternal life.
