Description: God reveals His glory and purpose to the humble and lowly, lifting them into divine significance.
INTRODUCTION
In a world that celebrates status, influence, and human achievement, God often chooses a different path. He reveals Himself not to the proud or self-sufficient, but to the humble and lowly in heart. This divine pattern reminds us that access to God’s revelation is not based on position but on disposition.
In Luke 2:8-14, the announcement of Jesus’ birth was first given to shepherds: ordinary, lowly individuals considered insignificant by societal standards. Yet, they were chosen to receive one of the greatest revelations in history. This demonstrates that God values humility and sincerity over outward status.
Understanding this truth challenges believers to cultivate humility as a lifestyle. When we humble ourselves before God, we position ourselves to receive divine revelation, guidance, and elevation. God’s announcements often come to those who are least expected but most prepared in heart.
1. GOD CHOOSES THE HUMBLE FOR DIVINE REVELATION
God intentionally reveals His plans to those who walk in humility.
a) God Resists the Proud (James 4:6)
God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Pride blocks divine revelation, while humility attracts it.
b) The Meek Receive Guidance (Psalm 25:9)
The meek will He guide in judgement, and the meek will He teach His way. Humility makes one teachable.
c) Spiritual Poverty Attracts the Kingdom (Matthew 5:3)
Those who recognise their need for God are blessed and positioned to receive His kingdom.
d) God Looks at the Heart (Isaiah 66:2)
God esteems those who are humble and contrite in spirit, and who tremble at His Word.
Biblical Example: Moses, described as very meek, received direct revelation and guidance from God (Numbers 12:3, 7-8).
2. DIVINE ANNOUNCEMENTS COME IN UNEXPECTED PLACES
God is not limited by location or environment when revealing Himself.
a) God Meets People in Their Daily Duties (Luke 2:8)
The shepherds were simply doing their work when the announcement came. God often meets us in our daily routines.
b) No Place Is Too Lowly (Psalm 139:7-10)
God’s presence can reach anywhere. He is not confined to temples or special locations.
c) Divine Encounters Can Happen Anytime (Acts 16:25-26)
Even in unexpected moments, God can intervene powerfully.
d) God Interrupts the Ordinary (Exodus 3:1-4)
Moses encountered God in the wilderness while tending sheep. God uses ordinary settings for extraordinary encounters.
Biblical Example: Elisha was called while ploughing in the field, showing that divine calling can come in ordinary places (1 Kings 19:19-21).
3. HUMILITY POSITIONS YOU FOR DIVINE ELEVATION
Those who receive divine revelation in humility are often lifted into greater purpose.
a) God Lifts the Humble (1 Peter 5:6)
Humble yourselves under God’s mighty hand, and He will exalt you in due time.
b) From Lowly to Significant (Luke 2:17-18)
The shepherds became carriers of the good news, moving from obscurity to relevance.
c) God Uses the Weak to Confound the Mighty (1 Corinthians 1:27)
God chooses the foolish and weak things of the world to shame the wise and strong.
d) Elevation Comes with Purpose (Luke 2:10-11)
The announcement carried a message of great joy for all people. Elevation is tied to divine assignment.
Biblical Example: David was taken from tending sheep and made king over Israel because of his humble heart (1 Samuel 16:11-13).
4. OUR RESPONSE TO DIVINE ANNOUNCEMENT MATTERS
Receiving divine revelation requires a proper response to maximise its impact.
a) Immediate Response (Luke 2:15-16)
The shepherds went quickly to see what was announced. Prompt action is crucial.
b) Sharing the Revelation (Luke 2:17)
They made known abroad what they had heard. Divine encounters are meant to be shared.
c) Glorifying God (Luke 2:20)
They returned glorifying and praising God. Gratitude seals divine encounters.
d) Retaining the Experience (Luke 2:19)
Mary kept these things and pondered them in her heart. Reflection helps preserve revelation.
Biblical Example: The Samaritan woman, after encountering Jesus, went and told others, leading many to believe (John 4:28-30, 39).
CONCLUSION
God’s divine announcements are not reserved for the elite but for the humble and receptive. The story of the shepherds reminds us that God values a heart that is open, teachable, and responsive. No matter your status, God can reveal Himself to you in powerful ways.
As you cultivate humility and remain faithful in your daily walk, you position yourself for divine encounters that can transform your life and impact others. Stay watchful, stay humble, and be ready—your divine announcement may be closer than you think.
