INTRODUCTION
In John 21:19, Jesus gave Peter a direct and personal command: “Follow me.” This instruction came after Peter’s restoration, showing that despite his past failures, he was still called to a life of discipleship and purpose.
The call to follow Christ is the essence of Christianity. It is not merely about believing in Him but about walking in His footsteps, obeying His word, and aligning our lives with His will. Following Christ requires commitment, sacrifice, and a willingness to leave behind anything that hinders our relationship with Him.
In today’s world, many claim to know Christ, but true discipleship is demonstrated through consistent obedience and devotion. The call “Follow me” is still relevant; it is a call to a transformed life, guided by Christ.
1. THE CALL TO FOLLOW CHRIST IS PERSONAL
Jesus spoke directly to Peter, showing that discipleship is individual.
a. A Personal Invitation (John 21:19)
Jesus calls individuals into a personal relationship with Him.
b. A Call by Name (John 10:3)
The Good Shepherd calls His sheep by name.
c. No One Can Follow for You (Romans 14:12)
Each person must give account for their own life.
d. A Relationship, Not Religion (John 15:15)
Following Christ is about intimacy, not ritual.
e. Biblical Example:
Jesus called Matthew from his tax booth, and he responded immediately, leaving everything to follow Him (Matthew 9:9).
2. FOLLOWING CHRIST REQUIRES SACRIFICE
Discipleship involves letting go of self and worldly attachments.
a. Denying Self (Luke 9:23)
Believers must deny themselves daily.
b. Taking Up the Cross (Matthew 16:24)
Following Christ requires willingness to endure hardship.
c. Letting Go of the Past (Philippians 3:13)
Believers must move forward without being bound by the past.
d. Counting the Cost (Luke 14:28)
Discipleship requires careful commitment.
e. Biblical Example:
The disciples left their nets and followed Jesus, demonstrating total surrender (Matthew 4:18-20).
3. FOLLOWING CHRIST DEMANDS FOCUS AND COMMITMENT
Jesus corrected Peter when he became distracted by others.
a. Focus on Christ Alone (John 21:21-22)
Jesus told Peter not to compare himself with others.
b. Avoiding Distractions (Hebrews 12:2)
Believers must fix their eyes on Jesus.
c. Running the Race with Endurance (Hebrews 12:1)
The Christian life requires perseverance.
d. Staying Committed to the Call (1 Corinthians 15:58)
Believers must remain steadfast.
e. Biblical Example:
Paul remained focused on his calling despite challenges, pressing toward the mark (Philippians 3:13-14).
4. FOLLOWING CHRIST LEADS TO PURPOSE AND GLORY
Jesus revealed that Peter’s life would glorify God.
a. Living for God’s Glory (1 Corinthians 10:31)
Everything we do should glorify God.
b. Fulfilling Divine Purpose (Jeremiah 1:5)
God has a plan for every believer.
c. A Life of Impact (Matthew 5:16)
Believers are to shine as lights in the world.
d. Eternal Reward (2 Timothy 4:7-8)
Faithful followers receive a crown of righteousness.
e. Biblical Example:
Peter fulfilled his calling and became a powerful leader in the early church, bringing glory to God (Acts 2:14-41).
CONCLUSION
The command “Follow me” is a call to a life of total surrender and devotion to Christ. It is not a casual invitation but a serious commitment that requires sacrifice, focus, and obedience.
When believers respond to this call, they discover purpose, direction, and fulfilment. Following Christ leads to a life that glorifies God and impacts others for eternity.
