LABOUR THAT ENDURES

INTRODUCTION
Every person is building something with his or her life. Our decisions, relationships, ministry, service, sacrifices, and investments are all contributing to the structure we are building. Paul teaches in 1 Corinthians 3:13-15 that every person's work will eventually be revealed and tested, making the quality of our labour more important than its outward appearance.
Not everything that looks impressive will endure. Some works are motivated by pride, competition, recognition, selfish ambition, or temporary gain, while other works are produced through faith, obedience, love, sacrifice, and dependence upon God. The test of our labour is not simply whether people admired it but whether it possesses lasting value before God.
Therefore, we must labour with eternity in view. We may not always see immediate results, and people may not always recognise our efforts, but God sees every faithful sacrifice. When our labour is rooted in Christ and carried out with sincerity, it will stand the test and receive God's approval.
1. BUILD ON THE FOUNDATION OF CHRIST
Enduring labour begins with the right foundation. Without Christ, even impressive achievements can ultimately prove spiritually empty.
a) Christ Is The Foundation (1 Corinthians 3:11)
Jesus Christ is the only foundation that can support a life and ministry with eternal significance. Everything we do must remain centred on Him.
b) Build According To God's Word (Matthew 7:24-25)
A life built upon obedience to God's Word can withstand the storms and pressures that test its stability.
c) Depend On God's Grace (1 Corinthians 15:10)
Paul recognised that his labour was made possible by God's grace. Enduring service requires dependence upon divine strength rather than human ability alone.
d) Keep Christ At The Centre (Colossians 1:18)
When Christ remains central, our priorities, motives, and actions are increasingly aligned with His purposes.
Biblical Example: Noah built the ark according to God's instructions despite having no visible evidence of the coming flood. His obedience endured because it was founded on God's Word (Genesis 6:22; Hebrews 11:7).
2. LABOUR WITH PURE MOTIVES
The quality of our work is connected to the condition of our hearts. God examines not only what we do but why we do it.
a) Serve From Love (1 Corinthians 13:1-3)
Even impressive spiritual activities lose their value when they are disconnected from genuine love. Love gives our service the right foundation.
b) Seek God's Approval (Galatians 1:10)
When pleasing people becomes our primary goal, our motives can easily become distorted. Faithful servants seek to please Christ above all.
c) Reject Self-Glory (1 Corinthians 3:7)
God is the One who gives the increase. Therefore, we must resist taking personal glory for what His grace has accomplished.
d) Serve With Humility (Philippians 2:3-4)
Humility enables us to serve others without constantly seeking recognition, position, or praise.
Biblical Example: John the Baptist willingly directed attention towards Jesus rather than himself, demonstrating the humility of a servant whose motives were centred on God's purpose (John 1:29-30; 3:28-30).
3. PERSEVERE IN FAITHFUL SERVICE
Enduring labour requires perseverance. Some assignments produce results quickly, while others require years of patience and consistency.
a) Do Not Grow Weary (Galatians 6:9)
God calls us to continue doing good even when the harvest is delayed. Faithful persistence eventually produces results in God's appointed time.
b) Remain Steadfast (1 Corinthians 15:58)
Believers are encouraged to remain steadfast because labour in the Lord is never wasted.
c) Continue Through Difficult Seasons (2 Timothy 4:5)
Faithfulness is demonstrated most clearly when circumstances become difficult. We must remain committed even when the path becomes challenging.
d) Wait For God's Harvest (Psalm 126:5-6)
Some seeds are planted with tears, but God can transform faithful labour into a joyful harvest.
Biblical Example: Nehemiah continued rebuilding Jerusalem's walls despite opposition, threats, discouragement, and criticism, refusing to abandon the assignment God had placed before him (Nehemiah 4:6-9; 6:15-16).
4. INVEST IN ETERNAL THINGS
Enduring labour is directed towards things that outlast the present world. We must invest our time, energy, resources, and influence in what carries eternal significance.
a) Win Souls For Christ (Proverbs 11:30)
Helping people come to know God has eternal significance that earthly achievements cannot equal.
b) Disciple Others (Matthew 28:19-20)
Teaching people to follow Christ creates spiritual influence that can continue from one generation to another.
c) Build God's People (Ephesians 4:11-13)
Ministry should strengthen believers and help them grow towards spiritual maturity.
d) Lay Up Heavenly Treasure (Matthew 6:19-20)
Jesus calls us to invest in treasures that cannot be destroyed by earthly circumstances.
Biblical Example: Paul invested in people such as Timothy and Titus, equipping them to continue Gospel ministry beyond his own immediate generation (2 Timothy 2:1-2; Titus 1:4-5).
5. LIVE WITH THE FINAL TEST IN VIEW
Paul reminds us that every person's work will be tested. This reality should influence how we live and serve today.
a) Remember The Day Of Testing (1 Corinthians 3:13)
Our work will eventually be revealed. Nothing remains permanently hidden before God.
b) Build What Survives The Fire (1 Corinthians 3:14)
Work that survives God's testing demonstrates genuine spiritual value and receives a reward.
c) Accept God's Evaluation (2 Corinthians 5:10)
Every believer will stand before Christ and give an account. This should encourage us to live responsibly and faithfully.
d) Look Forward To The Reward (Revelation 22:12)
Jesus promises to come with His reward. Faithful service has eternal consequences and eternal rewards.
Biblical Example: Paul completed his ministry with confidence, declaring that he had fought the good fight, finished his course, and kept the faith (2 Timothy 4:7-8).
CONCLUSION
God is not merely interested in how much we accomplish; He is interested in the quality and motive of our labour. Labour that endures is rooted in Christ, produced through pure motives, sustained by perseverance, directed towards eternal things, and prepared to withstand God's examination.
Therefore, do not become discouraged when your work appears small or your results seem delayed. Continue planting, watering, serving, praying, teaching, giving, encouraging, and witnessing faithfully. God sees your labour, and if you remain faithful, your work will not be in vain. Build today with eternity in view.
PRAYER POINTS
1. Father, help me to build every aspect of my life and service firmly upon Jesus Christ, the only true foundation, in Jesus name.
2. Lord, purify my motives and deliver me from pride, selfish ambition, competition, and the desire for human applause, in Jesus name.
3. Father, give me grace to serve You with genuine love, humility, sincerity, and wholehearted devotion, in Jesus name.
4. Lord, strengthen me whenever I become weary and help me to remain faithful even when the results of my labour are delayed, in Jesus name.
5. Father, let every seed I plant through preaching, teaching, prayer, giving, encouragement, and service produce lasting spiritual fruit, in Jesus name.
6. Lord, help me to invest my time, gifts, resources, and influence in things that have eternal value, in Jesus name.
7. Father, use my life to win souls, strengthen believers, disciple people, and advance Your kingdom, in Jesus name.
8. Lord, deliver me from every form of spiritual carelessness and help me to build carefully what will withstand Your divine examination, in Jesus name.
9. Father, let my labour remain fruitful through every season and give me grace to finish every assignment You have entrusted to me, in Jesus name.
10. Lord, when my work is tested, let it be found faithful and enduring, and may I receive Your approval and eternal reward, in Jesus name.
PROPHETIC DECLARATIONS
1. You shall labour upon the foundation of Jesus Christ, and your work shall possess stability, purpose, and lasting spiritual value.
2. Your motives shall be purified, and your service shall increasingly flow from love for God rather than the desire for human recognition.
3. You shall not grow weary in doing good; divine strength shall sustain you through every difficult and demanding season of service.
4. The seeds you plant through prayer, preaching, teaching, giving, encouragement, and faithful service shall produce lasting spiritual fruit.
5. Your labour shall touch lives beyond your immediate generation, and the spiritual investments you make shall continue to produce results.
6. You shall receive grace to remain faithful when results are delayed, trusting God to bring the increase in His appointed time.
7. You shall invest increasingly in eternal things, and your life shall become a channel through which people are brought closer to God.
8. Every work you undertake for the glory of God shall receive divine strength, and the Lord shall preserve what is genuinely valuable in your labour.
9. When your work is tested, you shall not be ashamed; what you have built through faith, obedience, love, and perseverance shall endure.
10. You shall finish your course faithfully, keep the faith, and receive the joy of the Lord's approval and the eternal reward prepared for those who labour faithfully.
