Description: This sermon teaches that God's watchful eyes are upon His people, seeing their struggles, guiding their steps, protecting their lives and working on their behalf.
INTRODUCTION
One of the greatest assurances a believer can have is the knowledge that God is watching over his or her life. Human beings may overlook us, forget our contributions, misunderstand our struggles or fail to recognise our needs. Sometimes, we may feel alone in the midst of difficult circumstances, wondering whether anybody sees what we are going through. But the Word of God assures us that the eyes of the Lord are upon His people. He is never distracted, never absent and never unaware of what concerns us. His eyes see what others cannot see, and His attention reaches places where human assistance cannot reach.
In 2 Chronicles 16:9, God declares that His eyes run throughout the whole earth to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose hearts are fully committed to Him. This statement was delivered through the prophet Hanani to King Asa, who had relied on the king of Syria instead of trusting the Lord. God was reminding Asa that He was able to defend those who depended on Him. The same truth appears throughout Scripture: God saw Hagar in her distress, remembered Noah in the midst of the flood, heard the cries of Israel in Egypt and watched over His people through their difficult journeys. His eyes are not merely observing; they reveal His knowledge, care, guidance and power.
When God's eyes are upon you, you are not forgotten, abandoned or left to face life alone. It does not mean that you will never experience challenges, but it assures you that your life remains under His watchful care. He sees your tears, knows your needs, understands your battles and directs your steps. His eyes are upon you in your home, workplace, ministry, business and every season of your life. Therefore, live with confidence, walk in obedience and remain faithful to Him. The God who watches over you is able to show Himself strong on your behalf.
1. WHEN GOD'S EYES ARE UPON YOU, YOU ARE NEVER FORGOTTEN
One of the most painful experiences in life is to feel forgotten. People may make promises and fail to fulfil them. Those who once celebrated you may become distant, and those you expect to remember your sacrifices may move on without acknowledging them. However, God's attention is not governed by human memory. He knows every person who belongs to Him and remains aware of their circumstances.
The fact that people do not remember you does not mean that God has forgotten you. His eyes are upon you even when your name is absent from human conversations and your struggles are unknown to those around you.
a. God sees you even when people overlook you (Genesis 16:13)
Hagar was distressed after conflict arose between her and Sarah. She fled into the wilderness, where she encountered the angel of the Lord. In that lonely place, she discovered that God had seen her.
She called Him the God who sees. Hagar's experience reveals that God's attention is not restricted to prominent people or familiar places.
You may feel overlooked by family members, colleagues, friends or even fellow believers. But God sees you. Your struggles are not hidden from Him, and your tears are not wasted.
b. God remembers you even when others forget you (Isaiah 49:15-16)
God used the picture of a mother and her nursing child to communicate the certainty of His remembrance. He declared that even if a mother could forget her child, He would not forget His people.
People may forget what you have done for them, but God does not forget your faithful service. He sees your sacrifices, your prayers and your commitment.
Do not become discouraged because people fail to recognise your contribution. Continue doing what is right, knowing that your life is never hidden from God.
c. God sees your tears and understands your pain (Psalm 56:8)
David spoke of God keeping count of his wanderings and putting his tears in His bottle. This beautiful picture reveals God's personal concern for the suffering of His people.
There are tears that cannot be explained in ordinary conversation. There are burdens that people cannot fully understand. Yet God knows the pain behind your silence.
Do not be ashamed to bring your sorrow before Him. He is able to comfort you, strengthen you and give you grace to continue.
d. God sees your faithfulness in secret (Matthew 6:4)
Jesus taught that the Father sees what is done in secret and rewards accordingly. This means that acts of devotion and service do not need public recognition to have value before God.
You may be serving faithfully without receiving applause. You may be praying for others without anyone knowing. You may be making sacrifices that are never publicly acknowledged.
Continue to serve God sincerely. His eyes are upon you, and your labour in Him is not in vain.
Biblical Example: Noah (Genesis 6:8-9; 7:1)
When corruption filled the earth, Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. God recognised his faithfulness in a generation that had turned away from righteousness. Noah's experience teaches us that even when the majority choose a different path, God sees those who remain committed to Him.
2. WHEN GOD'S EYES ARE UPON YOU, HE WILL GUIDE YOUR STEPS
Life is full of decisions, opportunities and uncertainties. We do not always know which direction to take or what the future holds. Sometimes, a decision that appears attractive may lead to trouble, while an opportunity that seems ordinary may become a blessing.
One of the privileges of living under God's watchful eyes is His willingness to guide those who trust Him. He sees the road ahead and understands the consequences of choices we cannot fully evaluate.
a. God promises to instruct and teach you (Psalm 32:8)
“I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.” — Psalm 32:8 (KJV)
God does not merely observe His people; He promises to guide them. His guidance is available through His Word, the leading of the Holy Spirit, godly counsel and the wisdom He provides.
Do not make important decisions solely on the basis of emotions, pressure or popular opinion. Seek God's direction before taking significant steps.
b. God directs the path of those who acknowledge Him (Proverbs 3:5-6)
Solomon instructs us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and not lean on our own understanding. When we acknowledge Him in all our ways, He promises to direct our paths.
Human understanding is limited. We may see an opportunity but fail to recognise its dangers. God sees the full picture.
Make God part of your decisions. Commit your plans to Him, study His Word and remain sensitive to His direction.
c. God can prevent you from taking the wrong path (Psalm 119:105)
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” — Psalm 119:105 (KJV)
God's Word provides direction and exposes dangers that may not be obvious. It helps us distinguish between what is right and what is merely attractive.
A believer who neglects Scripture becomes vulnerable to deception and poor decisions. The Word of God gives us a reliable foundation for daily living.
Let the Scriptures shape your values, choices and relationships. When God's Word directs your steps, you are better prepared to avoid destructive paths.
d. God can redirect your plans according to His purpose (Acts 16:6-10)
Paul and his companions intended to preach in certain regions, but the Holy Spirit did not permit them to proceed as planned. Later, Paul received the vision of a man from Macedonia asking for help.
Their plans were redirected towards a new field of ministry.
Sometimes, a closed door is not necessarily a sign of failure. God may be redirecting you towards another opportunity or assignment.
Do not force every door open. Pray for discernment and be willing to follow God's leading, even when it differs from your original plans.
Biblical Example: Abraham's Servant (Genesis 24:12-27)
When Abraham's servant was sent to find a wife for Isaac, he prayed for God's guidance. The Lord directed his steps and brought him into contact with Rebekah. The servant recognised God's hand in the events and worshipped Him. His experience shows the importance of seeking divine guidance in important decisions.
3. WHEN GOD'S EYES ARE UPON YOU, HE WILL DEFEND YOU
The Christian life is not free from opposition. There may be people who misunderstand your intentions, resist your progress or attempt to frustrate your purpose. There are also spiritual battles that cannot be handled by human strength alone.
However, God's watchful eyes assure us that He knows what is happening. He is able to defend His people, strengthen them and act on their behalf. Our confidence must not rest in revenge or human power but in the Lord who judges righteously.
a. God watches over those whose hearts are committed to Him (2 Chronicles 16:9)
The Lord declared that His eyes move throughout the earth to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose hearts are fully committed to Him.
This Scripture reminds us that God is actively concerned about those who trust Him. He is not powerless in the face of opposition.
However, the passage also warns against divided loyalty. King Asa was rebuked because he relied on human alliances instead of depending on God.
Let your heart remain committed to the Lord. Do not allow fear, pressure or the desire for quick solutions to draw you away from trusting Him.
b. God fights for His people (Exodus 14:13-14)
When Israel stood before the Red Sea with Pharaoh's army behind them, Moses told the people to stand still and see the salvation of the Lord. He assured them that the Lord would fight for them.
The Israelites had no military strength to defeat Pharaoh's army. Their deliverance required divine intervention.
There are battles you cannot win through argument, influence or personal strength. In such situations, pray, obey God's instructions and trust Him to act according to His purpose.
c. God frustrates the plans of the wicked (Psalm 33:18-19)
The psalmist declares that the eye of the Lord is upon those who fear Him and hope in His mercy, to deliver their souls from death and keep them alive in famine.
God's attention is accompanied by His ability to preserve and deliver. He is not unaware of threats against His people.
Do not live in constant fear of those who oppose you. Maintain a clean heart, walk in righteousness and commit your concerns to God.
d. God will not abandon you in the battle (Isaiah 41:10)
God tells His people not to fear because He is with them. He promises to strengthen, help and uphold them.
His presence does not mean that every battle will disappear immediately. It means that you do not have to face life's challenges alone.
When you encounter opposition, remain steadfast. God can provide wisdom, strength, protection and the grace to overcome.
Biblical Example: Elisha and His Servant (2 Kings 6:15-17)
When the king of Syria surrounded Dothan with horses and chariots, Elisha's servant became afraid. But Elisha prayed that God would open his eyes, and the servant saw the mountain full of horses and chariots of fire surrounding Elisha. The enemy's army was not the only reality present. God's heavenly protection was greater. This account reminds us that God's people are never beyond His watchful care.
4. WHEN GOD'S EYES ARE UPON YOU, HE WILL PROVIDE FOR YOU
God knows our needs even before we express them. He understands the pressures of daily living, the responsibilities of family life and the demands of ministry. His care extends to every area of our existence.
The eyes of the Lord are upon His people, and He knows how to sustain them. His provision may come through work, opportunities, relationships, wisdom, unexpected assistance or miraculous intervention. Whatever the channel, He remains the source of every good provision.
a. God sees your needs before you ask (Matthew 6:8)
Jesus taught that our Father knows what we need before we ask Him. This does not make prayer unnecessary; rather, it gives us confidence when we approach God.
We do not pray to inform God of something He does not know. We pray because we depend on Him and trust His care.
Bring your needs before the Lord with confidence. Do not allow anxiety to control your heart when you have a Father who knows your needs.
b. God can provide in unexpected places (1 Kings 17:2-6)
During the famine, God instructed Elijah to go to the brook Cherith. He provided water from the brook and commanded ravens to bring him food.
The method of provision was unusual, but God was able to sustain His servant.
Do not restrict God to one method of provision. He can use opportunities, people, institutions and circumstances you may not have considered.
Remain faithful and sensitive to His instructions. Trust Him to supply what you need according to His wisdom.
c. God can multiply what appears insufficient (1 Kings 17:8-16)
The widow of Zarephath had only a handful of meal and a little oil. She expected to prepare one final meal for herself and her son. But through the instruction of Elijah, God sustained her household throughout the famine.
What appeared insufficient became enough through divine provision.
Do not despise the little you have. Be faithful with your resources, practise wise stewardship and trust God to provide as you follow His instructions.
d. God supplies according to His riches in glory (Philippians 4:19)
Paul assured the Philippian believers that God would supply all their need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
This promise rests on God's unlimited resources, not on our ability to control circumstances.
Continue to work diligently, manage your resources wisely and depend on God. He is able to sustain you and provide what is necessary for the fulfilment of His purpose.
Biblical Example: The Israelites in the Wilderness (Exodus 16:11-18; 17:1-6)
God provided manna for Israel and brought water from the rock during their wilderness journey. The environment did not naturally supply what they needed, but God sustained them. His provision reminds us that even in difficult seasons, He remains able to care for His people.
5. WHEN GOD'S EYES ARE UPON YOU, HE WILL PRESERVE YOUR LIFE
God's watchful care does not mean that believers will never experience danger, suffering or difficult seasons. Scripture contains many examples of faithful people who faced severe trials. However, God's presence gives us confidence that our lives remain under His authority.
He is able to preserve us from danger, sustain us through hardship and strengthen us to fulfil His purpose. We must therefore live wisely, obey His instructions and trust Him with our lives.
a. God watches over your going out and coming in (Psalm 121:7-8)
The psalmist declares that the Lord will preserve His people from evil and keep their going out and coming in from this time forth and for evermore.
This is an assurance of God's continuing care. Our daily journeys, activities and responsibilities are not outside His concern.
Commit your movements to God. Pray for His protection, act wisely and avoid unnecessary risks. Trust Him to watch over you wherever you go.
b. God is your refuge in times of trouble (Psalm 46:1)
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” — Psalm 46:1 (KJV)
The psalmist does not say that trouble will never come. He declares that God is present to help His people when trouble comes.
When you face danger, uncertainty or distress, run to God in prayer. He is your refuge, strength and dependable helper.
Do not allow fear to make you forget the presence of the Lord. Depend on Him for courage and direction.
c. God can preserve you through difficult seasons (Isaiah 43:2)
God promised His people that when they passed through waters and rivers, He would be with them. He also assured them that the fire would not consume them.
The promise was not that they would never encounter deep waters or fiery trials, but that God's presence would remain with them.
You may be passing through a difficult season, but it does not mean that God has abandoned you. Hold firmly to His promises and remain faithful.
d. God is able to keep you until your assignment is fulfilled (Psalm 138:8)
The psalmist declares that the Lord will perfect that which concerns His people and that His mercy endures for ever.
God's purpose for your life is not an insignificant matter to Him. He knows what He has called you to do and is able to sustain you as you fulfil His will.
Do not live carelessly, but do not surrender to fear either. Walk in obedience and trust God to guide and preserve you.
Biblical Example: Daniel in the Lions' Den (Daniel 6:16-23)
Daniel was thrown into the lions' den because he remained faithful to his prayer life. Yet God sent His angel and shut the lions' mouths. Daniel came out without injury because he trusted in his God. His experience demonstrates that God's protection is greater than the threats of those who oppose His people.
6. WHEN GOD'S EYES ARE UPON YOU, HE EXPECTS YOU TO WALK IN OBEDIENCE
The assurance of God's watchful eyes should not make us careless about how we live. Knowing that God sees everything should inspire reverence, holiness and faithfulness. His eyes are upon us not only to comfort us but also to examine our conduct.
A believer must not desire God's protection while rejecting His instructions. We must seek to live in a way that honours the One who watches over us.
a. Live with the consciousness that God sees everything (Proverbs 15:3)
“The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.” — Proverbs 15:3 (KJV)
Nothing is hidden from God. He sees our public activities and private conduct. He knows our motives, intentions and decisions.
This truth should encourage us to practise integrity even when nobody is watching. Do not do secretly what you would be ashamed to do openly.
Live with reverence for God and remember that your entire life is before Him.
b. Maintain a sincere and upright heart (2 Chronicles 16:9)
God promised to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose hearts are fully committed to Him.
The passage reminds us that our relationship with God must be genuine. We cannot claim to depend on Him while deliberately living in rebellion against His Word.
Examine your heart regularly. Remove anything that competes with your devotion to God and renew your commitment to His will.
c. Practise righteousness in your daily conduct (1 Peter 3:12)
Peter writes that the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous and His ears are open to their prayers.
This teaches us the importance of living in accordance with God's standards. Our relationship with Him should influence how we speak, work, manage resources and treat people.
Do not separate your spiritual life from your everyday conduct. Let your behaviour reflect the righteousness you profess.
d. Remain faithful in every season (Job 36:7)
Elihu declared that God does not withdraw His eyes from the righteous but establishes them with kings upon the throne and exalts them.
God's watchful care should inspire perseverance. We must not serve Him only when circumstances are favourable or when immediate rewards are visible.
Remain committed to God in seasons of abundance and scarcity, celebration and sorrow, opportunity and opposition. Let your faithfulness be consistent.
Biblical Example: Joseph in Potiphar's House (Genesis 39:7-12)
When Potiphar's wife attempted to entice Joseph into immorality, Joseph refused. He recognised that the act would be a sin against God, even though it could have been concealed from his master. His response revealed a strong consciousness of God's presence. Joseph's example teaches us to maintain integrity even when nobody else may know what we are doing.
CONCLUSION
When God's eyes are upon you, you are never forgotten, abandoned or left without help. He sees your struggles, understands your pain, guides your steps, provides for your needs and watches over your life. His eyes are upon you in the wilderness, in the valley, in the workplace, in the home and in every season of your journey. Human beings may overlook you, but God never loses sight of you. His attention is constant, His knowledge is complete and His power is sufficient to sustain you.
Therefore, live with confidence in God's care and remain committed to His Word. Do not allow difficult circumstances to make you feel abandoned, and do not allow His mercy to become an excuse for careless living. Walk in righteousness, seek His guidance, trust His provision and remain faithful in every season. May you continually experience the comfort, direction, protection and strength that come from living under the watchful eyes of the Almighty God.
