INTRODUCTION
The blood of Jesus is one of the greatest foundations of the Christian faith. From the Old Testament sacrifices to the death of Christ on the cross, Scripture reveals that blood is connected with atonement, redemption, forgiveness and covenant. The blood of Jesus is not an ordinary blood; it is the precious blood of the Lamb of God who gave Himself for the salvation of humanity.
Jesus said in Matthew 26:28, “For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.” His blood established the New Covenant and provided what the sacrifices of the Old Testament could only point towards. Through His blood, sinners can receive forgiveness and believers can approach God with confidence.
Revelation 12:11 declares that God's people overcame the enemy by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony. Therefore, the blood of Jesus is not only a reminder of what Christ accomplished at Calvary; it is a foundation for our faith, victory, freedom and confidence in God. When we understand the power of the blood, we can stand boldly in what Christ has accomplished for us.
1. THE BLOOD OF JESUS PROVIDES REDEMPTION
Redemption means being purchased or released from bondage by a price. Humanity was separated from God by sin, but Jesus paid the ultimate price for our redemption.
a. We Are Redeemed By His Blood (Ephesians 1:7) — Through Christ's blood, we have redemption and the forgiveness of sins according to the riches of God's grace.
b. Jesus Paid The Price For Us (1 Peter 1:18-19) — We were not redeemed with corruptible things but with the precious blood of Christ.
c. Christ Delivered Us From The Power Of Darkness (Colossians 1:13-14) — Through Christ, believers are translated from darkness into God's kingdom.
d. Redemption Brings Freedom (Galatians 5:1) — Christ has made believers free, and they must stand firmly in that liberty.
Biblical Example: Israel was delivered from Egyptian bondage through the Passover sacrifice and the blood applied to their houses (Exodus 12:1-13).
2. THE BLOOD OF JESUS BRINGS FORGIVENESS
Sin creates separation between humanity and God, but the blood of Jesus provides the basis for forgiveness and restoration.
a. His Blood Was Shed For The Remission Of Sins (Matthew 26:28) — Jesus deliberately gave His blood for the forgiveness of many.
b. His Blood Cleanses From Sin (1 John 1:7) — The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses believers from all sin as they walk in the light.
c. God Is Faithful To Forgive (1 John 1:9) — When we confess our sins, God forgives and cleanses us from unrighteousness.
d. Christ Bore Our Sins (Isaiah 53:5-6) — Jesus carried the punishment that brought us peace with God.
Biblical Example: The thief who turned to Jesus on the cross received forgiveness and the promise of paradise because he believed in Christ (Luke 23:39-43).
3. THE BLOOD OF JESUS ESTABLISHES THE NEW COVENANT
The blood of Jesus established a new and better covenant between God and humanity. Through Christ, we have access to promises that rest upon His finished work.
a. Jesus Called It The Blood Of The New Testament (Matthew 26:28) — Christ's blood established the New Covenant.
b. The Covenant Is Sealed By His Blood (Luke 22:20) — Jesus declared that the cup represented the new covenant in His blood.
c. We Have Better Promises (Hebrews 8:6) — Christ is the mediator of a better covenant established upon better promises.
d. God's Covenant Is Reliable (Hebrews 10:16-17) — The New Covenant provides forgiveness and God's law written upon the hearts of His people.
Biblical Example: At the Last Supper, Jesus instituted the communion covenant and explained that His blood would be shed for the forgiveness of sins (Matthew 26:26-28).
4. THE BLOOD OF JESUS GIVES ACCESS TO GOD
Sin once created separation, but the blood of Jesus has opened a new and living way into God's presence.
a. We Have Boldness To Enter God's Presence (Hebrews 10:19) — Believers can enter the holiest with boldness through the blood of Jesus.
b. We Are Brought Near To God (Ephesians 2:13) — Those who were once far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.
c. Jesus Is The Way To The Father (John 14:6) — Access to God is ultimately through Christ.
d. We Can Draw Near With Confidence (Hebrews 10:22) — Believers are encouraged to draw near with a true heart and full assurance of faith.
Biblical Example: The veil of the temple was torn when Jesus died, demonstrating that His sacrifice had opened the way into God's presence (Matthew 27:50-51).
5. THE BLOOD OF JESUS BRINGS CLEANSING
The blood of Jesus does not merely forgive; Scripture teaches that it cleanses and purifies the believer.
a. His Blood Cleanses From Sin (1 John 1:7) — Walking in the light brings continual cleansing through Christ's blood.
b. His Blood Purifies The Conscience (Hebrews 9:14) — Christ's blood cleanses the conscience from dead works so that we can serve the living God.
c. We Are Washed From Our Sins (Revelation 1:5) — Jesus loved us and washed us from our sins with His own blood.
d. God Desires A Clean Vessel (2 Timothy 2:21) — Those who cleanse themselves from dishonour become vessels prepared for good works.
Biblical Example: Isaiah encountered the holiness of God and received cleansing and preparation for divine service (Isaiah 6:5-8).
6. THE BLOOD OF JESUS GIVES VICTORY OVER THE ENEMY
Revelation 12:11 reveals that believers overcome the enemy by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony. The victory belongs to Christ, and believers stand in that victory by faith.
a. We Overcome By The Blood (Revelation 12:11) — The blood of the Lamb is presented as a foundation of spiritual victory.
b. Christ Defeated Principalities And Powers (Colossians 2:14–15) — Jesus disarmed spiritual powers through His finished work.
c. The Enemy Has Been Defeated (Hebrews 2:14) — Through death, Christ destroyed the one who had the power of death.
d. Believers Must Stand In Victory (Ephesians 6:13) — Having received God's armour, believers must stand firm against spiritual opposition.
Biblical Example: The Israelites were protected from the destroying angel during the Passover because of the blood of the lamb applied to their houses (Exodus 12:13).
7. THE BLOOD OF JESUS SPEAKS BETTER THINGS
The blood of Jesus speaks of mercy, forgiveness, redemption and covenant. Its message is greater than every accusation raised against God's people.
a. The Blood Speaks Better Things (Hebrews 12:24) — Jesus is the mediator of the New Covenant, and His sprinkled blood speaks better things than Abel's.
b. The Blood Speaks Mercy (Hebrews 4:16) — Through Christ, we can approach God's throne to receive mercy and grace.
c. The Blood Speaks Forgiveness (Ephesians 1:7) — Redemption through Christ's blood brings forgiveness according to God's grace.
d. The Blood Speaks Life (Leviticus 17:11) — Scripture connects blood with life and atonement, pointing ultimately to Christ's sacrificial death.
Biblical Example: Abel's blood cried for justice, but Christ's blood speaks a better message of redemption and mercy (Hebrews 12:24).
8. THE BLOOD OF JESUS GIVES ME CONFIDENCE TO TESTIFY
The blood of Jesus should not only be understood; it should become part of our testimony. Revelation 12:11 connects the blood of the Lamb with the word of testimony.
a. Declare What Christ Has Done (Revelation 12:11) — Believers overcome by trusting Christ's finished work and declaring their testimony.
b. Do Not Be Ashamed Of The Gospel (Romans 1:16) — The gospel is God's power unto salvation for everyone who believes.
c. Testify Of God's Goodness (Psalm 66:16) — God's people should declare what He has done for their souls.
d. Live As A Witness (Acts 1:8) — The Holy Spirit empowers believers to become witnesses of Christ.
Biblical Example: The man Jesus delivered from demons went throughout his region declaring the great things God had done for him (Mark 5:18-20).
CONCLUSION
The blood of Jesus is at the heart of our salvation. Through His blood, we have redemption, forgiveness, cleansing, covenant, access to God and victory over the powers of darkness. We do not trust in our human strength or religious works; we stand upon what Jesus Christ accomplished through His sacrifice at Calvary.
Therefore, hold firmly to your faith in Christ. When the enemy accuses you, remember the blood. When sin tries to condemn you, remember the blood. When you face spiritual opposition, remember the blood. When you approach God in prayer, remember the blood. The blood of Jesus has already spoken, and its message is victory, mercy, redemption and freedom.
