THE GOD WHO TURNS CAPTIVITY AROUND

THE GOD WHO TURNS CAPTIVITY AROUND

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Psalm 126:1-3 (KJV)— “When the LORD turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The LORD hath done great things for them. The LORD hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.”

Supporting Texts: Job 42:10, Jeremiah 29:11-14, Zephaniah 3:20, Deuteronomy 30:3, Acts 12:6-11

Description: God has the power to reverse situations, restore what was lost, and transform sorrow into joy. No matter how long captivity has lasted, the Lord can bring sudden, divine turnaround that amazes both you and your enemies.

INTRODUCTION:
Captivity represents any condition where freedom is restricted, potential is hindered, and joy is stolen. It can be spiritual, emotional, financial, or physical. Many in the Bible faced seasons of captivity — Israel in Babylon, Joseph in prison, and Peter in jail — but their stories changed when God intervened.

When the Lord turns captivity, the change is often sudden and astonishing. It feels like a dream because the burden that seemed permanent is lifted instantly. This divine turnaround not only restores freedom but also brings joy, honour, and testimony that others cannot deny.

God’s promise to His people is clear: He will not leave them in captivity forever. His mercy, faithfulness, and power guarantee that no situation is beyond His ability to reverse. Today’s message is a reminder that the God who turns captivity around is still at work, and your own turnaround is at hand.

1. GOD CAN TURN CAPTIVITY IN AN INSTANT
No matter how long the bondage has lasted, God can change it suddenly.

a) God specialises in sudden deliverance (Acts 12:6-11)
Peter’s release from prison happened overnight, without human intervention.

b) God’s timing is perfect (Ecclesiastes 3:11)
He steps in at the right moment for maximum impact.

c) God needs no permission to deliver (Psalm 115:3)
He acts according to His will and power.

d) God breaks every chain instantly (Isaiah 52:2)
One word from Him can change your condition.

Biblical Example: Joseph (Genesis 41:14) — In one day, he moved from prison to the palace.

2. GOD RESTORES WHAT WAS LOST
Turning captivity is not just about release but full restoration.

a) God restores fortunes (Job 42:10)
He gave Job twice as much as he had before.

b) God restores wasted years (Joel 2:25)
Nothing is too lost for Him to recover.

c) God restores joy and honour (Isaiah 61:7)
Shame is replaced with double honour.

d) God restores relationships and positions (Jeremiah 29:14)
He brings His people back to their rightful place.

Biblical Example: Naomi (Ruth 4:13-17) — Her sorrow turned into joy as God restored her family through Obed.

3. GOD MAKES YOUR TESTIMONY PUBLIC
When He turns captivity, it becomes obvious to everyone.

a) God’s works speak for themselves (Psalm 126:2)
Even unbelievers testify of His goodness.

b) God uses your turnaround as a witness (John 9:25)
The man born blind said, “One thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.”

c) God brings you into a place of laughter (Genesis 21:6)
Sarah declared, “God hath made me to laugh.”

d) God gives you a testimony that silences mockery (Micah 7:10)
Your enemies will witness your elevation.

Biblical Example: Israel’s return from Babylon (Ezra 1:1-4) — The heathen acknowledged God’s hand in their freedom.

4. GOD TURNS CAPTIVITY THROUGH INTERCESSION
Prayer and divine mercy often trigger a turnaround.

a) God responds to the cry of His people (Psalm 34:17)
He delivers them from all their troubles.

b) God honours intercession for others (Job 42:10)
Job’s own captivity was turned when he prayed for his friends.

c) God moves when His people seek Him (2 Chronicles 7:14)
Repentance and prayer bring healing and restoration.

d) God’s mercy overrides judgement (Lamentations 3:22-23)
Even when captivity is deserved, His compassion can end it.

Biblical Example: Daniel (Daniel 9:1-3, 20-23) — His prayer brought about prophetic fulfilment for Israel’s return.

CONCLUSION:
The God who turned the captivity of Zion is still the same today. No prison, no bondage, no loss is beyond His power to reverse. Your situation may seem hopeless, but He can change it in a moment, restore all that was stolen, and give you joy beyond expectation.

Trust in Him, pray without ceasing, and expect divine intervention. Your story will soon cause others to marvel and declare, “The LORD has done great things for them.”
