INTRODUCTION:
Death is one of the greatest weapons the enemy uses to instil fear in humanity. From the beginning, the devil’s agenda has been to kill, steal, and destroy (John 10:10). Many people live under the constant fear of death — fear of premature death, sudden death, death in the family, or even spiritual death.
However, Jesus came to destroy the one who had the power of death — the devil — and to deliver those who were all their lives held in slavery by their fear of it. As believers, we must understand that death has been defeated at the cross. We are no longer subject to its bondage or terror.
Freedom from the grip of death is part of our inheritance in Christ. This includes freedom from physical death before our time, freedom from spiritual death, and ultimately eternal life in Christ. When you know your position in Christ, you will no longer live in fear.
1. UNDERSTANDING THE GRIP OF DEATH
The grip of death refers to the bondage, fear, and control death tries to exercise over people.
a) Death as a spiritual weapon of fear (Hebrews 2:15)
Many live tormented by the thought of death, which affects their peace and purpose.
b) The sting of sin leads to spiritual death (Romans 6:23)
When sin rules, death becomes a natural consequence.
c) Premature death is a satanic agenda (John 10:10)
The enemy desires to cut lives short before destiny is fulfilled.
d) Living under a death sentence spiritually and physically (Isaiah 38:1)
Some people carry invisible death sentences that only divine intervention can revoke.
e) Biblical Example: Hezekiah was given a death sentence, but through prayer, God added fifteen more years to his life (Isaiah 38:1–5).
2. THE VICTORY OF CHRIST OVER DEATH
Jesus didn’t just die — He conquered death and rose again, giving us victory.
a) Christ took on flesh to destroy the power of death (Hebrews 2:14)
He became like us to defeat death on our behalf.
b) Jesus holds the keys of death and hell (Revelation 1:18)
No one can take your life unless heaven permits.
c) The resurrection proves death’s defeat (1 Corinthians 15:54–57)
The grave could not hold Him — and it won’t hold you either.
d) Believers now walk in the law of life (Romans 8:2)
The Spirit of life in Christ has set us free from death’s dominion.
e) Biblical Example: Lazarus was raised from the dead by Jesus to demonstrate divine authority over death (John 11:43–44).
3. LIVING IN FREEDOM FROM DEATH
Our liberty in Christ includes dominion over death and the fear it brings.
a) Faith in Christ nullifies the fear of death (John 11:25–26)
He that believes in Him shall never die eternally.
b) Speaking life-filled words is a spiritual key (Proverbs 18:21)
Death and life are in the power of the tongue.
c) Living in righteousness preserves life (Proverbs 12:28)
The way of righteousness leads away from destruction.
d) A purposeful life is preserved by divine mercy (Psalm 91:16)
God satisfies His own with long life and salvation.
e) Biblical Example: Paul was stoned and left for dead, yet God raised him because his purpose was not yet complete (Acts 14:19–20).
4. ENFORCING YOUR DELIVERANCE FROM DEATH
Deliverance must be enforced through intentional spiritual engagement.
a) Reject every covenant of death over your life (Isaiah 28:18)
Declare every death covenant annulled by the blood of Jesus.
b) Engage in spiritual warfare and prophetic decrees (Ezekiel 37:9–10)
Speak life to every dry situation around you.
c) Align your life with God’s will and purpose (Philippians 1:21–25)
A purposeful life has heaven’s backing and protection.
d) Use the blood of Jesus as a defence (Exodus 12:13)
The blood speaks better things and averts destruction.
e) Biblical Example: During Passover, the Israelites were exempted from death because of the blood on their doorposts (Exodus 12:29–30).
CONCLUSION:
As a child of God, death no longer has dominion over you. Jesus broke its grip, conquered its power, and gave you life more abundantly. You do not need to live in fear or anxiety about untimely death — God has a divine calendar for your life, and until your assignment is completed, no weapon formed against you shall prosper.
Declare boldly that you shall not die but live to declare the works of the Lord. Walk in faith, righteousness, and divine purpose, and you will continue to enjoy divine preservation.
