THE GOD WHO TURNS SHAME TO GLORY

THE GOD WHO TURNS SHAME TO GLORY

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Isaiah 61:7

Supporting Texts: Psalm 3:3, Joel 2:26-27, Romans 10:11, Zephaniah 3:19, 1 Peter 2:6

INTRODUCTION:
Shame is a weapon the enemy uses to make people feel unworthy, unloved, and forgotten. It can arise from past mistakes, failures, public ridicule, or prolonged suffering. But God does not leave His children in shame. He is a God who exchanges shame for glory, mockery for honour, and rejection for divine acceptance.

Throughout the Scriptures, we see how God intentionally intervenes in the lives of those who were disgraced and turns their story around. His desire is not only to lift us out of shame but to place a crown of glory upon us. He replaces ashes with beauty and sorrow with singing.

In this study, we will explore how God turns shame to glory, the conditions required, and biblical examples that prove His ability to do so in our own lives.

1. GOD REMOVES THE GARMENT OF SHAME

a) God does not leave His people clothed in shame
(Isaiah 61:7) tells us that instead of shame, we shall have a double portion and everlasting joy.

b) Shame is a burden, but God replaces it with honour
(Zechariah 3:3-4) shows how the filthy garment was taken from Joshua and replaced with rich robes.

c) God’s people are not meant to be objects of ridicule
(Joel 2:26-27) promises that His people will never be put to shame.

d) Divine cleansing removes the stain of shame
(Psalm 51:7) – When God washes a person, he becomes whiter than snow.

Biblical Example: The Prodigal Son – Luke 15:11-24. Despite his disgrace, the father clothed him with honour and celebrated his return.

2. GOD TURNS REPROACH INTO RECOGNITION

a) Reproach is temporary; God’s glory is eternal
(Romans 8:18) – The present suffering is not worthy to be compared with the glory to come.

b) God lifts people from the pit to the palace
(Psalm 113:7-8) – He raises the poor from the dust and seats them with princes.

c) The name of the Lord takes away disgrace
(Isaiah 54:4) – "You shall forget the shame of your youth."

d) God uses the rejected to manifest His glory
(1 Corinthians 1:27-28) – God uses the foolish things to confound the wise.

Biblical Example: Hannah – 1 Samuel 1:6-20. God turned her shame of barrenness into glory with the birth of Samuel.

3. GOD REPLACES DISGRACE WITH DIGNITY

a) God honours those who seek Him in their pain
(Psalm 34:5) – "They looked to Him and were radiant, and their faces were not ashamed."

b) The glory of God shines best in broken vessels
(2 Corinthians 4:7) – "We have this treasure in earthen vessels."

c) God changes the narrative for His children
(Job 42:10) – After Job’s shame, God gave him double.

d) Trust in God brings honour, not shame
(Romans 10:11) – Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.

Biblical Example: Mephibosheth – 2 Samuel 9:1-13. Despite his shameful condition, David honoured him for Jonathan’s sake.

4. GOD GIVES A NEW IDENTITY AND GLORY

a) In Christ, you are a new creation
(2 Corinthians 5:17) – Old things are passed away; all things become new.

b) God renames the disgraced with names of honour
(Isaiah 62:2) – "You shall be called by a new name."

c) Glory follows when we surrender to God
(1 Peter 5:10) – After suffering, God perfects and establishes us.

d) The Holy Spirit seals us for glory, not disgrace
(Ephesians 1:13-14) – We are sealed for the day of redemption.

Biblical Example: Jabez – 1 Chronicles 4:9-10. Though born in sorrow, God granted him honour and enlargement.

5. GOD SILENCES MOCKERS WITH TESTIMONIES

a) God uses testimonies to silence enemies
(Psalm 126:1-3) – "Then said they among the heathen, The Lord hath done great things for them."

b) God fights for the oppressed and shamed
(Exodus 14:14) – The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.

c) Divine intervention ends long-term embarrassment
(John 5:1-9) – The man by the pool had waited 38 years, but God lifted his reproach.

d) God prepares a table before you in the presence of your enemies
(Psalm 23:5) – He anoints your head with oil and causes your cup to overflow.

Biblical Example: Elizabeth – Luke 1:24-25. The Lord took away her reproach among men by blessing her with a child in old age.

CONCLUSION:
Shame is not the end of your story. When you come to God, He rewrites your narrative. No matter how disgraceful your past has been, God has the power to turn it into a glorious testimony. The One who lifts from the dust and sets with princes is still working wonders today.

If you have experienced mockery, rejection, disgrace, or failure, this is your time of divine exchange. Your shame will be turned to honour. Your ridicule will become rejoicing, and your past will be covered by God’s glory.
