INTRODUCTION:
The life of a believer is often described in Scripture as a pilgrimage—a journey through a foreign land with a glorious destination in view. This world is not our final home; we are citizens of heaven passing through time into eternity. The mindset of a pilgrim helps us to stay focused on our heavenly inheritance, not distracted by the fleeting pleasures of this world.
Just as Abraham and other heroes of faith lived in tents, moving from place to place with eyes fixed on a city whose builder is God, so are we called to live with a similar posture—detached from the world, yet making impact while we are here. Pilgrims live by faith, trusting God’s promises even when the journey is long and uncertain.
Living as a pilgrim demands spiritual discipline, clarity of purpose, and eternal focus. In a world full of materialism and self-indulgence, the believer is called to live differently, as a sojourner who knows his true home is not here, but in heaven.
1. RECOGNISE THAT YOU ARE A STRANGER ON EARTH
To live as a pilgrim, you must acknowledge that this world is not your permanent residence.
a) You Are a Stranger and Sojourner
Believers are temporary residents on earth with a higher calling. (1 Peter 2:11)
b) This World Is Not Your Home
Your citizenship is in heaven, not in the systems of this world. (Philippians 3:20)
c) Earthly Things Are Temporary
Everything you see is passing away, but God’s kingdom is eternal. (2 Corinthians 4:18)
d) Long for the Heavenly Country
Just like the patriarchs, desire the better country prepared by God. (Hebrews 11:16)
Biblical Example: Abraham left Ur and lived as a pilgrim, looking forward to the city built by God (Hebrews 11:8–10).
2. LIVE WITH ETERNAL PERSPECTIVE
A pilgrim lives with heaven in mind, making choices that reflect eternal values.
a) Set Your Mind on Things Above
Let heavenly realities guide your decisions and affections. (Colossians 3:1–2)
b) Avoid Conforming to Worldly Patterns
Refuse to be shaped by worldly systems or sinful desires. (Romans 12:2)
c) Invest in Eternal Treasures
Seek first God’s kingdom, not material wealth. (Matthew 6:19–21)
d) Maintain a Pilgrim's Discipline
Walk in holiness and self-control as you await the Lord. (1 Peter 1:13–16)
Biblical Example: Moses chose to suffer affliction with God’s people rather than enjoy sin for a season (Hebrews 11:24–26).
3. SEPARATE FROM WORLDLY CORRUPTION
Pilgrims live holy lives, staying unspotted from the world's pollution.
a) Be in the World but Not of It
Though we live among people, we are not to adopt their values. (John 17:14–16)
b) Abstain from Fleshly Lusts
Desires of the flesh war against your soul. (1 Peter 2:11)
c) Walk in the Spirit
Let the Holy Spirit guide your actions and speech. (Galatians 5:16–17)
d) Shine as Lights in a Dark World
Your lifestyle should reflect the glory of God. (Philippians 2:15)
Biblical Example: Lot was tormented by the evil conduct of Sodom, yet God rescued him from their judgment (2 Peter 2:7–9).
4. KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE DESTINATION
Pilgrims endure because they know a glorious home awaits them.
a) Look Forward to the Coming of the Lord
Jesus is preparing a place for us and will return. (John 14:2–3)
b) Let Hope Anchor Your Soul
Hope keeps you steady through trials and uncertainties. (Hebrews 6:19)
c) Press Toward the Mark
Stay focused on finishing your race in faith. (Philippians 3:13–14)
d) Encourage Others to Stay on the Path
Help fellow pilgrims remain faithful on the journey. (1 Thessalonians 5:11)
Biblical Example: Paul kept his eyes on the crown of righteousness awaiting him (2 Timothy 4:7–8).
CONCLUSION:
Living as a pilgrim is a call to spiritual alertness and heavenly focus. It reminds us not to be tied down by earthly concerns but to walk in faith, looking unto Jesus. Pilgrims are people of vision and endurance who carry heaven in their hearts while walking through earth.
As we pass through this world, let us remember we are citizens of a better country. Let your life reflect the values of that eternal kingdom. Don’t settle here—press forward with hope, holiness, and unwavering devotion until you reach your eternal home.
