JESUS THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD

JESUS THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: John 8:12

Key Verse:
I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” – John 8:12

Supporting Texts: Isaiah 9:2; John 1:4-5; Psalm 27:1; 1 John 1:5; Matthew 5:14–16

Description:
Jesus is the divine Light that dispels the darkness of sin, ignorance, and hopelessness, bringing illumination, truth, and life to all who follow Him.

INTRODUCTION:
The concept of light is one of the most powerful symbols in Scripture. From the very beginning, God commanded light to shine out of darkness, revealing His purpose and order in creation. In the same way, Jesus came into a dark world filled with sin, confusion, and spiritual blindness to bring illumination and truth. His declaration, “I am the light of the world,” reveals His identity as the only One who can lead humanity out of the darkness of sin and ignorance into the glorious light of salvation.

Darkness represents confusion, deception, fear, and separation from God. Many today live in this kind of darkness: moral, emotional, or spiritual, searching for clarity, peace, and direction. But Jesus alone can light up the path of those who believe in Him. He is the Light that gives meaning to life, exposes evil, and guides men into divine truth.

When you allow Jesus to shine in your life, every form of darkness loses its power. His presence brings revelation where there was confusion, peace where there was turmoil, and victory where there was defeat. Through Him, we find the light of life and the grace to become reflectors of His divine glory in a dark and perverse generation.

1. JESUS IS THE LIGHT THAT REVEALS GOD TO HUMANITY
The primary mission of Jesus was to reveal the Father’s nature, will, and glory to mankind. Through His words and works, He brought divine truth into a world clouded by ignorance and sin.

a) The world was in deep spiritual darkness (John 1:4–5). Humanity lost its light through sin, but Jesus came as the true Light that shines in the darkness, and darkness cannot overcome it.

b) Jesus reveals the nature and love of God (John 14:9). By knowing Jesus, we come to know the Father’s heart, His mercy, and His righteousness.

c) The light of Jesus brings understanding (Psalm 119:130). His Word enlightens our minds and reveals divine wisdom for daily living.

d) The light of Jesus guides us to eternal life (John 12:46). Those who believe in Him are rescued from the power of darkness and receive the light of eternal salvation.

Biblical Example:
Nicodemus came to Jesus at night seeking understanding, and through the light of truth, he was introduced to the mystery of being born again (John 3:1-6).

2. JESUS IS THE LIGHT THAT CONQUERS DARKNESS
Wherever Jesus appears, darkness disappears. His presence drives away the powers of evil and establishes divine order and victory.

a) Darkness cannot overpower the light (John 1:5). The light of Christ remains victorious in every generation, no matter how thick the darkness around.

b) The light of Jesus delivers from the power of Satan (Colossians 1:13).  Through His death and resurrection, Christ broke the dominion of darkness over humanity.

c) His light dispels fear and uncertainty (Psalm 27:1). When Jesus dwells within us, fear loses its grip and boldness replaces timidity.

d) His light brings healing and restoration (Malachi 4:2).  The light of His presence brings wholeness to every area of life: body, soul, and spirit.

Biblical Example:
When Jesus met the man possessed by a legion of demons in the country of the Gadarenes, His light overpowered the darkness, setting the man free and restoring him to his right mind (Mark 5:1-15).

3. JESUS MAKES HIS FOLLOWERS LIGHT-BEARERS
Jesus not only shines upon us but also transforms us into lights that reflect His glory in the world.

a) Believers are the light of the world (Matthew 5:14-16). We are called to shine through good works, righteous living, and godly character.

b) Our light must not be hidden (Luke 8:16). We must openly display the light of Christ in our homes, workplaces, and communities.

c) Continuous fellowship keeps our light burning (John 15:5). The more we abide in Jesus, the brighter our lives radiate His truth.

d) Light draws others to salvation (Isaiah 60:1-3). Through our lives, others can see the beauty of Christ and turn from darkness to light.

Biblical Example:
After Peter and John encountered Jesus, their boldness and miracles in Acts 3:1-10 revealed Christ’s light to the world, leading many to faith.

4. JESUS IS THE LIGHT THAT LEADS TO GLORY
The ultimate destination of the light of Christ is eternal glory. Those who walk in His light on earth will shine forever in His presence.

a) Walking in the light guarantees divine direction (Psalm 37:23). The Lord orders the steps of those who follow His light faithfully.

b) The light of Jesus leads to everlasting joy (Isaiah 60:19-20). His presence brings a joy that outlasts earthly troubles.

c) In heaven, His light will shine forever (Revelation 21:23). The Lamb Himself will be the eternal Light in the New Jerusalem.

d) Following Jesus ensures victory till the end (Romans 13:12-13). Those who remain in His light will overcome temptation, trials, and the darkness of this world.

Biblical Example:
Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of the Father. The light of heaven gave him courage and triumph in his final moments (Acts 7:55-56).

CONCLUSION:
Jesus Christ is the Light that reveals, transforms, and leads us to glory. Without Him, the world remains in confusion and bondage, but through Him, every shadow of darkness disappears. When we receive His light, we receive truth, peace, and divine direction.

Therefore, let us walk daily in His light, reflecting His character and truth to others. The world desperately needs the shining of believers who have been illuminated by Christ. Allow His light to shine through you until the darkness around you fades away completely.

1. Lord Jesus, shine Your light into every dark area of my life.
