Description: This study teaches believers the importance of humility in the kingdom of God and reveals how true greatness comes through childlike dependence, meekness, and submission to God.

INTRODUCTION

In Matthew chapter 18, the disciples came to Jesus asking who would be the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Instead of speaking about power, status, or position, Jesus called a little child and placed him in their midst. He then taught that unless they were converted and became like little children, they could not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus revealed that greatness in God’s kingdom is not measured by pride, popularity, wealth, titles, or earthly influence, but by humility, obedience, simplicity, and dependence upon God. The kingdom of God operates differently from worldly systems that exalt self-promotion and ambition.

Humility is a vital Christian virtue. It opens the heart to God’s grace, wisdom, correction, and spiritual growth. Pride, on the other hand, leads to downfall, spiritual blindness, and resistance to God’s work.

Believers are therefore called to walk humbly before God and others, following the example of Jesus Christ who humbled Himself completely in obedience to the Father.

1. TRUE GREATNESS IN GOD’S KINGDOM COMES THROUGH HUMILITY

God measures greatness differently from the world.

a) The disciples desired greatness and position (Matthew 18:1)
Human nature naturally seeks recognition, honour, and superiority over others.

b) Jesus taught that humility is the pathway to greatness (Matthew 18:4)
In God’s kingdom, those who humble themselves are exalted by God.

c) Pride leads to destruction and spiritual downfall (Proverbs 16:18)
Self-exaltation blinds people to their need for God and correction.

d) God honours those who walk humbly before Him (James 4:10)
Divine promotion comes from God rather than human striving and self-promotion.

Biblical Example:
Joseph remained humble through suffering, imprisonment, and promotion, and God eventually elevated him to leadership in Egypt (Genesis 41:39-44).

2. CHILDLIKE HUMILITY PLEASES GOD

Jesus used a child to illustrate kingdom character.

a) Children demonstrate dependence and trust (Matthew 18:3)
Believers must depend fully upon God rather than self-sufficiency and pride.

b) Childlike humility involves teachability and openness (Proverbs 9:9)
Humble people are willing to learn, receive correction, and grow spiritually.

c) Simplicity and sincerity are valuable before God (Psalm 51:17)
God delights in brokenness, sincerity, and hearts free from hypocrisy.

d) Humility strengthens relationships and unity among believers (Ephesians 4:2-3)
Meekness and patience help preserve peace and harmony within the body of Christ.

Biblical Example:
Samuel remained humble and teachable from childhood, listening attentively to God’s voice and instruction (1 Samuel 3:9-10).

3. JESUS CHRIST IS THE PERFECT EXAMPLE OF HUMILITY

Believers are called to follow Christ’s example.

a) Jesus humbled Himself completely in obedience (Philippians 2:5-8)
Though He was divine, Christ willingly served humanity and submitted to the Father’s will.

b) Christ came to serve rather than seek earthly honour (Matthew 20:28)
Kingdom leadership is built upon service, sacrifice, and love.

c) Humility allows believers to reflect Christ’s character (Colossians 3:12)
Meekness, gentleness, and compassion demonstrate spiritual maturity.

d) God highly exalted Jesus after His humility and obedience (Philippians 2:9)
Humility precedes divine honour, promotion, and glory.

Biblical Example:
Jesus washed the disciples’ feet, demonstrating servant leadership and humble love despite His authority as Lord and Master (John 13:12-15).

4. GOD GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE

Humility attracts divine help, wisdom, and favour.

a) God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6)
Pride creates distance from God, while humility draws believers closer to Him.

b) Humble people receive wisdom and guidance from God (Proverbs 11:2)
Pride often leads to poor judgment, while humility opens the heart to divine instruction.

c) Humility strengthens spiritual growth and maturity (1 Peter 5:5-6)
Surrendering to God allows believers to grow steadily in faith and character.

d) Humility prepares believers for greater kingdom responsibility (Luke 16:10)
Faithfulness and humility in small things position believers for greater assignments.

Biblical Example:
Moses was described as very meek above all men on the earth, and God entrusted him with extraordinary leadership and revelation (Numbers 12:3).

CONCLUSION

Humility is essential in the kingdom of God. Jesus taught that true greatness comes not through pride, self-promotion, or earthly status, but through childlike humility, dependence upon God, and a servant-hearted lifestyle.

Believers are called to follow the example of Jesus Christ by walking in meekness, obedience, love, and submission to God. Humility opens the door to divine grace, wisdom, favour, spiritual growth, and kingdom promotion.

As Christians humble themselves before God, He lifts them up and shapes them into vessels fit for His glory and purpose.
