Description: This study teaches believers the importance of continual forgiveness, the danger of unforgiveness, and the mercy God expects His children to show toward others.

INTRODUCTION

In Matthew chapter 18, Peter asked Jesus how many times he should forgive someone who sinned against him. Peter suggested forgiving seven times, likely believing this to be generous. However, Jesus responded by saying: “Until seventy times seven.” Christ was not merely giving a mathematical figure but teaching that forgiveness should be continual, sincere, and unlimited.

Jesus then told the parable of the unforgiving servant. A servant who had been forgiven an enormous debt by his master later refused to forgive another servant who owed him a far smaller amount. When the master heard about it, he became angry and punished the unforgiving servant severely.

This parable reveals the seriousness of unforgiveness before God. Every believer has received great mercy, forgiveness, and grace through Christ. Therefore, Christians are also expected to forgive others genuinely and repeatedly.

Unforgiveness produces bitterness, spiritual bondage, broken relationships, emotional pain, and hindered fellowship with God. Forgiveness, however, brings peace, healing, freedom, reconciliation, and spiritual maturity.

1. GOD HAS FORGIVEN BELIEVERS GREATLY

Understanding God’s mercy helps believers forgive others.

a) The servant was forgiven an enormous debt he could never repay (Matthew 18:24-27)
This illustrates the immeasurable forgiveness and mercy God extends toward sinners.

b) Sin created a debt humanity could not remove by human effort (Romans 3:23)
Every person stands in need of God’s grace and forgiveness through Jesus Christ.

c) Christ demonstrated mercy through His sacrifice on the cross (Romans 5:8)
Jesus paid the price for humanity’s redemption while people were still sinners.

d) Believers are recipients of undeserved grace and compassion (Ephesians 2:8-9)
Salvation is a gift of God’s mercy rather than human achievement.

Biblical Example:
David experienced God’s forgiveness after repentance for his sin, demonstrating the mercy and compassion of God toward repentant hearts (Psalm 51:1-12).

2. BELIEVERS ARE COMMANDED TO FORGIVE OTHERS CONTINUALLY

Forgiveness is essential in Christian living.

a) Jesus taught unlimited forgiveness (Matthew 18:22)
Forgiveness should not be restricted by counting offences or keeping records of wrongs.

b) Believers must forgive as God forgave them (Colossians 3:13)
Christians are called to reflect God’s mercy and compassion toward others.

c) Forgiveness releases believers from bitterness and resentment (Ephesians 4:31-32)
Letting go of offences protects the heart from spiritual and emotional damage.

d) Love and forgiveness preserve relationships and unity (1 Peter 4:8)
Mercy and patience strengthen fellowship and reconciliation among believers.

Biblical Example:
Joseph forgave the brothers who betrayed and sold him into slavery, choosing mercy instead of revenge (Genesis 50:19-21).

3. UNFORGIVENESS BRINGS SPIRITUAL AND EMOTIONAL BONDAGE

A bitter heart hinders spiritual growth and peace.

a) The unforgiving servant faced severe consequences (Matthew 18:32-35)
Refusing to show mercy revealed a heart unchanged by grace.

b) Bitterness destroys peace and spiritual health (Hebrews 12:15)
Unforgiveness contaminates the heart and affects relationships negatively.

c) Unforgiveness hinders effective prayer and fellowship with God (Mark 11:25)
God expects believers to release offences before approaching Him in prayer.

d) Satan uses offence and bitterness to create division and bondage (2 Corinthians 2:10-11)
The enemy seeks to weaken believers through unresolved hurt and resentment.

Biblical Example:
Cain allowed anger and offence to grow within him until it produced hatred and violence against his brother Abel (Genesis 4:5-8).

4. FORGIVENESS BRINGS FREEDOM, HEALING, AND RESTORATION

Choosing forgiveness reflects spiritual maturity and Christlike character.

a) Forgiveness frees the heart from emotional and spiritual bondage (John 8:36)
Releasing offences brings peace, healing, and renewed joy.

b) Forgiveness opens the door for reconciliation and restoration (Romans 12:18)
God desires healing and unity where possible within relationships.

c) Christ Himself demonstrated forgiveness even while suffering (Luke 23:34)
Jesus prayed for those crucifying Him, revealing the depth of divine mercy.

d) Forgiveness reflects the transforming work of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23)
Mercy, patience, and love are evidence of spiritual growth and maturity.

Biblical Example:
Stephen forgave those persecuting him and prayed for them before his death, demonstrating Christlike mercy and grace (Acts 7:59-60).

CONCLUSION

Jesus taught that forgiveness should be continual and unlimited because believers themselves have received immeasurable mercy from God. Unforgiveness damages spiritual life, relationships, emotional health, and fellowship with God.

Christians are called to forgive others sincerely, release bitterness, and walk in love, mercy, and humility. Forgiveness does not excuse wrongdoing, but it frees the heart from bondage and allows God’s healing and peace to flow.

As believers follow Christ’s example of mercy and compassion, they reflect the heart and character of God to the world around them.
