Description: This study teaches believers about the danger of misplaced priorities, the deceitfulness of riches, and the necessity of wholehearted surrender and commitment to Christ.
INTRODUCTION
In Matthew chapter 19, a rich young ruler came to Jesus asking an important question: “What good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?” He appeared sincere, moral, disciplined, and religious. However, when Jesus exposed the condition of his heart, the young man walked away sorrowfully because he possessed great wealth and was unwilling to surrender it completely to follow Christ.
This account reveals that outward morality and religious activity alone are not enough for true discipleship. God looks beyond external appearance and examines the heart, priorities, and attachments of a person.
The rich young ruler desired eternal life, yet his wealth had become a stronger influence over his heart than his willingness to obey Jesus fully. His story warns believers about the danger of allowing possessions, ambitions, success, or earthly treasures to take the place that belongs to God.
Jesus does not condemn wealth itself, but He warns against trusting in riches or allowing material things to control the heart. True discipleship requires total surrender, obedience, and willingness to place Christ above everything else.
1. OUTWARD MORALITY ALONE CANNOT SAVE A PERSON
Religious activity without full surrender to God is incomplete.
a) The young ruler appeared morally upright (Matthew 19:20)
He claimed to have kept the commandments from his youth.
b) External goodness does not replace heart transformation (1 Samuel 16:7)
God examines motives, priorities, and inward devotion.
c) Salvation comes through relationship with Christ, not human effort alone (Ephesians 2:8-9)
Eternal life is received through God’s grace and true faith.
d) A person can appear religious outwardly while remaining spiritually bound inwardly (Isaiah 29:13)
Genuine discipleship requires wholehearted obedience.
Biblical Example:
The Pharisees appeared righteous outwardly but often lacked genuine humility and surrender before God (Matthew 23:27-28).
2. RICHES CAN BECOME A SPIRITUAL HINDRANCE
Wealth becomes dangerous when it controls the heart.
a) The young ruler loved his possessions greatly (Matthew 19:22)
His attachment to wealth prevented full obedience to Christ.
b) The love of money is spiritually destructive (1 Timothy 6:10)
Greed and materialism can lead people away from God.
c) Earthly treasures should never replace eternal priorities (Matthew 6:19-21)
Where a person’s treasure is, the heart will follow.
d) Trusting in riches creates false security (Proverbs 11:28)
Material wealth cannot provide eternal life or lasting peace.
Biblical Example:
Lot gradually became attached to worldly prosperity and moved toward Sodom, exposing himself and his family to spiritual danger (Genesis 13:10-13).
3. TRUE DISCIPLESHIP REQUIRES TOTAL SURRENDER
Following Christ demands complete commitment.
a) Jesus called the young ruler to follow Him fully (Matthew 19:21)
Christ requires priority above possessions, comfort, and ambition.
b) Discipleship involves sacrifice and obedience (Luke 9:23)
Believers must deny self and follow God faithfully.
c) God blesses those who surrender everything to Him (Romans 12:1)
A yielded life becomes useful for God’s kingdom.
d) Eternal rewards are greater than temporary earthly gain (2 Corinthians 4:18)
Spiritual treasures endure beyond earthly possessions.
Biblical Example:
The disciples left their nets, occupations, and security to follow Jesus wholeheartedly (Matthew 4:18-22).
4. GOD MUST REMAIN THE HIGHEST PRIORITY IN LIFE
Nothing should take God’s place within the heart.
a) Jesus exposed the ruler’s true priority (Matthew 19:21-22)
His possessions held greater control over him than his desire for Christ.
b) God demands first place in every area of life (Matthew 22:37)
Believers are called to love God completely.
c) Idolatry includes anything placed above God (Exodus 20:3)
Wealth, ambition, relationships, and success can become idols.
d) A surrendered heart experiences true spiritual freedom (John 8:36)
Freedom comes when Christ becomes Lord over every area of life.
Biblical Example:
Abraham demonstrated complete surrender by being willing to offer Isaac in obedience to God (Genesis 22:1-12).
CONCLUSION
The story of the rich young ruler reveals the danger of misplaced priorities and divided devotion. Although the young man desired eternal life, his attachment to wealth prevented him from fully surrendering to Christ.
Jesus teaches believers that true discipleship requires wholehearted obedience, surrender, and willingness to place God above every earthly possession or ambition. Wealth itself is not sinful, but it becomes dangerous when it controls the heart or replaces trust in God.
Believers are called to pursue eternal treasures, love God completely, and follow Christ without reservation. Only a fully surrendered heart can experience true spiritual fulfilment and eternal reward.
