THE POWER OF PRAYER IN THE LIFE OF A BELIEVER
By Rev. Samuel Arimoro
Main Text: James 5:16-18 – “Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.”
Supporting Texts: Luke 18:1, Philippians 4:6-7, 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Psalm 145:18, Mark 11:24
INTRODUCTION:
Prayer is the spiritual lifeline of every believer. It is not just a religious routine, but the believer’s direct communication channel with God. Through prayer, we fellowship with our Heavenly Father, receive divine instructions, and align ourselves with His will. A prayerless Christian is a powerless Christian.
In the life of a believer, prayer is both a shield and a weapon. It shields us from the fiery darts of the enemy and empowers us to take territory for the Kingdom of God. Prayer is the means through which God’s power is released into our lives and situations. Without prayer, the believer remains vulnerable to spiritual attacks and powerless against the schemes of the enemy.
The life of Christ Himself was marked by prayer. He prayed early in the morning, in the wilderness, before choosing His disciples, and even on the cross. If the Son of God needed to pray, how much more should we? Prayer is not optional; it is essential for a victorious Christian life.
1. PRAYER CONNECTS US TO GOD’S PRESENCE
Prayer is the believer’s access point into God’s throne room. It is where we commune with Him, express our gratitude, and seek His guidance. Without prayer, our spiritual connection weakens.
a) Prayer as a spiritual lifeline (Psalm 145:18)
Prayer keeps the believer’s relationship with God alive and active.
b) Prayer maintains intimacy with God (James 4:8)
Drawing near to God through prayer strengthens our fellowship with Him.
c) Prayer brings divine direction (Proverbs 3:5-6)
God guides believers who seek His face consistently.
d) Prayer opens the door for God’s presence (Exodus 33:14)
When we pray, God’s presence becomes evident in our lives.
Biblical Example: Moses’ forty days of prayer on Mount Sinai brought him into deep communion with God (Exodus 34:28-30).
2. PRAYER RELEASES DIVINE POWER
Prayer is a channel through which God’s power flows into our lives and circumstances.
a) Prayer breaks strongholds (2 Corinthians 10:4)
It dismantles satanic barriers and oppressions.
b) Prayer brings supernatural intervention (Acts 12:5-7)
When the church prayed for Peter, an angel was sent to deliver him.
c) Prayer activates miracles (Mark 11:24)
Believing prayer releases divine answers.
d) Prayer strengthens the believer’s spirit (Jude 1:20)
Praying in the Spirit energises our inner man.
Biblical Example: Elijah’s prayer brought fire down from heaven on Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18:36-39).
3. PRAYER BUILDS SPIRITUAL STRENGTH
Consistent prayer develops resilience and spiritual stamina in the believer’s walk.
a) Prayer renews spiritual energy (Isaiah 40:31)
It refreshes and empowers us to keep going.
b) Prayer gives peace of mind (Philippians 4:6-7)
Through prayer, we exchange anxiety for God’s peace.
c) Prayer helps resist temptation (Matthew 26:41)
It keeps us alert and spiritually vigilant.
d) Prayer deepens faith (Romans 10:17)
Communicating with God strengthens our trust in Him.
Biblical Example: Jesus prayed in Gethsemane and received strength to face the cross (Luke 22:41-44).
4. PRAYER BRINGS DIVINE PROTECTION
Prayer is a shield against the attacks of the enemy.
a) Prayer invites angelic assistance (Psalm 91:11)
God sends His angels to protect those who call upon Him.
b) Prayer blocks satanic traps (Isaiah 54:17)
It renders the enemy’s weapons ineffective.
c) Prayer delivers from danger (Psalm 34:17)
The Lord rescues those who cry out to Him.
d) Prayer brings supernatural preservation (Daniel 6:22)
It keeps us safe from physical and spiritual harm.
Biblical Example: Daniel’s prayer life preserved him in the lions’ den (Daniel 6:10-23).
5. PRAYER CHANGES SITUATIONS
Prayer can turn hopeless situations around.
a) Prayer brings healing (James 5:14-15)
The prayer of faith brings restoration.
b) Prayer changes destinies (1 Chronicles 4:10)
Jabez’s prayer turned his life from pain to blessing.
c) Prayer opens closed doors (Revelation 3:7)
God unlocks opportunities through prayer.
d) Prayer brings revival (2 Chronicles 7:14)
It transforms individuals and nations.
Biblical Example: Hannah’s persistent prayer changed her barrenness into fruitfulness (1 Samuel 1:9-20).
CONCLUSION:
Prayer is the believer’s most powerful spiritual tool. It not only draws us closer to God but also brings His power, protection, and intervention into our lives. When we pray, we invite heaven to act on our behalf.
