INTRODUCTION:
The power of spoken words is a divine principle established by God Himself. Prophecy is not just foretelling the future; it is the anointed declaration that releases God’s will and power into situations. When God’s word is spoken by His prophets, it carries authority that can change circumstances and revive what was dead.
Throughout the Bible, spoken words have demonstrated supernatural power—bringing life, judgment, healing, and deliverance. Understanding the weight of our words and how prophecy functions can empower believers to partner with God in manifesting His purposes on earth.
This message will explore how prophecy operates, the authority of spoken words, and how believers can wield this power effectively by faith.
1. PROPHECY BRINGS DIVINE INSTRUCTION AND DIRECTION
When God’s messenger speaks, His words guide the actions and decisions of His people, leading them according to His will. Prophecy provides clarity amid confusion and opens the way forward.
a) Elisha’s Prophetic Instruction to the Kings (2 Kings 3:15–18)
Elisha’s word revealed God’s plan to overcome the enemy, directing the kings to victory.
b) God Speaks to Guide and Command (Jeremiah 1:9–12)
God puts His words in the prophet’s mouth for accurate delivery of His message.
c) Prophecy Removes Doubt and Fear (Psalm 32:8)
God instructs and teaches His people through prophetic words.
d) The Word of the Lord is a Lamp to Our Feet (Psalm 119:105)
Prophetic words light the path and bring understanding.
Biblical Example: Elisha’s prophetic words led Israel’s kings to victory against their enemies (2 Kings 3:15–27).
2. PROPHECY REVIVES AND RESTORES WHAT SEEMS DEAD
Prophetic declarations have the power to breathe life into dry bones and restore hope in hopeless situations.
When God’s word is spoken in faith, it can cause a spiritual resurrection of what was thought lost or impossible. The words spoken carry life-giving power.
a) Ezekiel’s Vision of the Valley of Dry Bones (Ezekiel 37:1–10)
The prophet’s spoken word brought a dead valley to life as the breath of God entered the bones.
b) God’s Word Enlivens the Spirit (Romans 8:11)
The Spirit raises the dead to life through the power of God’s spoken word.
c) Faith Activates the Power of Words (Hebrews 11:3)
By faith, what is spoken takes shape and substance.
d) Prophecy Inspires Hope in the Heart (Romans 15:4)
Encouragement comes through God’s promises spoken aloud.
Biblical Example: The dry bones in Ezekiel’s vision came to life through the power of prophetic words (Ezekiel 37:1–10).
3. THE POWER OF SPOKEN WORDS CAN BRING BLESSING OR DESTRUCTION
Our words carry life or death; they have the power to build up or tear down, to bless or curse. Therefore, prophetic speech must be handled with reverence and responsibility.
Speaking God’s words brings blessing, but careless words cause harm.
a) Life and Death Are in the Power of the Tongue (Proverbs 18:21)
The tongue has creative power, making or breaking.
b) Timothy’s Charge to Preach the Word (1 Timothy 1:18)
Faithful preaching, a form of spoken prophecy, is essential for spiritual warfare.
c) Prophetic Words Must Be Truthful and Edifying (Ephesians 4:29)
Words should build up the hearers in love and truth.
d) Carelessness in Speech Can Lead to Judgment (James 3:6-10)
The tongue, when misused, can cause great damage.
Biblical Example: Prophets’ words brought blessing or judgment depending on their alignment with God’s will (e.g., Jonah’s prophecy bringing repentance to Nineveh - Jonah 3:1–10).
4. GOD EMPOWERS HIS PROPHETS TO SPEAK WITH AUTHORITY
The ability to prophesy and speak God’s words comes by His empowerment. Prophets are vessels through which God’s will is declared.
God’s anointing enables His servants to speak with power and confidence.
a) Jeremiah’s Commissioning by God (Jeremiah 1:9–12)
God put His words in Jeremiah’s mouth, equipping him for his prophetic mission.
b) The Holy Spirit Empowers Prophecy (Acts 1:8)
Believers receive power to witness and speak boldly.
c) Faith and Prayer Activate Prophetic Authority (Mark 11:23)
Speaking in faith releases God’s power to move mountains.
d) Prophets Must Depend on God’s Guidance (John 16:13)
The Spirit guides them into all truth for accurate prophecy.
Biblical Example: Jeremiah’s life and ministry exemplify God’s empowerment for prophetic declaration (Jeremiah 1:4–19).
CONCLUSION:
