Description: Some people in life, intentionally or unintentionally, become obstacles to God’s timing, testing patience, perseverance, and discernment.
INTRODUCTION
Life is filled with individuals who, consciously or unconsciously, delay the fulfilment of destiny. Laban serves as a clear example of a person who delayed God’s plan for Jacob. Jacob’s pursuit of his God-given wife Rachel was hindered by Laban’s schemes, demonstrating that destiny often encounters resistance.
Destiny delayers are not always enemies; sometimes, they are relatives, friends, or associates with authority over circumstances. These delays test our patience, sharpen our discernment, and reveal our commitment to God’s promises. It is crucial to understand how to navigate such obstacles without losing focus or faith.
Recognising destiny delayers is vital for spiritual growth. Jacob’s experience with Laban teaches that perseverance, strategic action, and reliance on God can overcome obstacles, ensuring that divine purpose is ultimately fulfilled.
1. RECOGNISING DESTINY DELAYERS
It is important to identify those who hinder your progress, whether intentionally or not, so you can navigate wisely.
a) Laban’s Deception (Genesis 29:25)
Laban substituted Leah for Rachel, delaying Jacob’s marriage to his true wife. Some people may alter plans that are meant to align with your God-given destiny.
b) Extended Service (Genesis 29:20, 30)
Jacob’s years of service were prolonged for his reward. Delays often test patience and commitment.
c) Hidden Motives (Genesis 29:26-27)
Laban used deceit for personal gain. Destiny delayers may disguise self-interest as guidance or authority.
d) Discernment Needed (Proverbs 13:22)
Recognising those whose actions impede progress requires wisdom and spiritual insight.
Biblical Example: Joseph faced delayers in the form of Potiphar’s wife and prison officials, yet God’s purpose was not thwarted (Genesis 39:7-20).
2. PATIENCE THROUGH DELAYS
Delays are not denials; they are tests of endurance and faithfulness to God’s calling.
a) Enduring Laban’s Schemes (Genesis 29:27-30)
Jacob patiently served an additional seven years to secure Rachel. Perseverance strengthens character and builds resilience.
b) Faith in God’s Timing (Genesis 29:20)
Jacob did not abandon hope despite the delay. Trust in God ensures that delays do not become derailments.
c) Avoiding Bitterness (James 1:12)
Responding with patience prevents discouragement from sabotaging future blessings.
d) Strategic Compliance (Genesis 31:1-3)
Jacob followed God’s guidance while fulfilling obligations, balancing submission with discernment.
Biblical Example: David endured Saul’s persecution for years before ascending the throne, demonstrating patience under delay (1 Samuel 24:1-22).
3. STRATEGIC ACTION AGAINST OBSTACLES
Delays must be navigated with wisdom, prayer, and strategic action to secure God’s promises.
a) Observing Opportunities (Genesis 30:25-27)
Jacob capitalized on his knowledge of Laban’s flocks to prosper. Timing and observation help overcome setbacks.
b) Divine Guidance (Genesis 31:3)
God instructed Jacob to leave Laban, showing that obedience is essential to outmaneuver delayers.
c) Protecting Your Destiny (Genesis 31:18)
Jacob departed secretly to avoid further manipulation. Strategic moves safeguard God’s plan.
d) Negotiating Challenges (Genesis 31:38-42)
Jacob addressed disputes with prudence, demonstrating that wisdom counters delay tactics.
Biblical Example: Nehemiah strategized carefully to rebuild Jerusalem’s walls despite opposition, balancing prayer, planning, and action (Nehemiah 4:13-20).
4. GOD’S PURPOSE WILL PREVAIL
Despite obstacles, God’s plan is unstoppable; delayers can only postpone, not prevent, destiny fulfilment.
a) Jacob’s Prosperity (Genesis 30:43)
God blessed Jacob with abundance despite Laban’s manipulation. Divine favour ensures ultimate victory.
b) Covenant Continuity (Genesis 31:5)
God’s promise remained intact, showing that human interference cannot thwart divine will.
c) Learning from Trials (Genesis 31:42)
Delays teach patience, discernment, and reliance on God.
d) Destiny Fulfilled (Genesis 31:55)
Jacob left Laban with all that God had blessed him with, demonstrating that perseverance leads to completion.
Biblical Example: Moses’ exile and years in Midian delayed his mission, yet God’s purpose for deliverance of Israel was fulfilled (Exodus 3:1-12).
CONCLUSION
Destiny delayers may appear in the form of deceit, control, or opposition, but God ensures that His plan prevails. Jacob’s encounter with Laban illustrates that delays are tests of patience, perseverance, and faith.
Believers must learn to recognise delayers, endure with patience, act strategically, and trust that divine purpose cannot be thwarted. God’s promises are unchanging, and obedience through delays positions us for ultimate fulfilment.
