Description: This study teaches believers about the spiritual danger of trusting in riches, the deceitfulness of materialism, and the importance of placing God above earthly possessions.
INTRODUCTION
After the rich young ruler walked away sorrowfully from Jesus, Matthew 19 records Christ giving a serious warning concerning riches and the human heart. Jesus explained that it is difficult for those who trust in wealth to enter the kingdom of God. He used the illustration of a camel passing through the eye of a needle to show how dangerous misplaced trust in riches can become.
Jesus was not condemning wealth itself, because God blesses people materially throughout Scripture. However, Christ warned against loving riches, depending upon wealth, and allowing material possessions to control the heart. Riches become spiritually dangerous when they replace trust in God and become the centre of life.
In today’s world, many people measure success, security, identity, and happiness through possessions, money, influence, and material achievements. Yet earthly wealth cannot save the soul, provide eternal peace, or guarantee spiritual fulfilment.
Believers are called to use material blessings wisely while keeping their hearts fully devoted to God. Riches should serve God’s purpose and never become idols that weaken spiritual life.
1. THE LOVE OF RICHES CAN PULL PEOPLE AWAY FROM GOD
Materialism can weaken spiritual devotion.
a) The rich young ruler chose possessions over following Christ (Matthew 19:22)
His attachment to wealth prevented complete surrender to God.
b) The love of money leads many into spiritual destruction (1 Timothy 6:9-10)
Greed and material obsession can corrupt priorities and faith.
c) Earthly riches often compete for the heart’s devotion (Matthew 6:24)
No one can serve both God and material wealth as masters.
d) Riches can create false confidence and independence from God (Deuteronomy 8:11-14)
Prosperity sometimes causes people to forget their dependence upon the Lord.
Biblical Example:
Lot gradually became consumed by worldly prosperity and exposed himself to spiritual compromise in Sodom (Genesis 13:10-13).
2. RICHES CANNOT SAVE OR SATISFY THE SOUL
Material possessions cannot replace eternal life and spiritual peace.
a) Jesus warned about gaining the world but losing the soul (Mark 8:36)
Earthly success without salvation leads to eternal loss.
b) Wealth cannot provide lasting fulfilment (Ecclesiastes 5:10)
The pursuit of money alone leaves the heart empty and restless.
c) Riches are temporary and uncertain (Proverbs 23:4-5)
Earthly possessions can disappear suddenly.
d) True security is found only in God (Psalm 62:10)
Believers must trust God rather than uncertain riches.
Biblical Example:
The rich fool stored earthly treasures for himself but died suddenly without being spiritually prepared (Luke 12:16-21).
3. TRUSTING IN RICHES HINDERS SPIRITUAL GROWTH
Dependence upon wealth weakens faith and humility.
a) Jesus said it is difficult for the rich to enter God’s kingdom (Matthew 19:23-24)
Riches can create spiritual pride and self-sufficiency.
b) Wealth sometimes blinds people to their spiritual need (Revelation 3:17)
Material success may hide inward spiritual emptiness.
c) God desires humility and dependence upon Him (James 4:6)
Spiritual growth flourishes where hearts remain surrendered to God.
d) Faith should rest in God’s power rather than human resources (Hebrews 11:6)
Trusting God produces deeper spiritual maturity.
Biblical Example:
King Nebuchadnezzar became proud because of his greatness until God humbled him and restored his understanding (Daniel 4:29-37).
4. BELIEVERS MUST USE RICHES FOR GOD’S GLORY
Material blessings should serve kingdom purposes.
a) God blesses people to become channels of blessing (Genesis 12:2)
Wealth should be used to honour God and help others.
b) Generosity reflects God’s character and compassion (2 Corinthians 9:6-8)
Giving strengthens spiritual freedom from greed.
c) Contentment protects believers from covetousness (Hebrews 13:5)
A satisfied heart rests in God’s provision.
d) Eternal treasures are more valuable than earthly possessions (Matthew 6:19-20)
Investments in God’s kingdom produce everlasting reward.
Biblical Example:
Zacchaeus demonstrated genuine repentance by using his wealth to bless others and restore what he had taken unjustly (Luke 19:8-9).
CONCLUSION
Jesus warned believers about the danger of loving riches because material wealth can easily capture the heart and replace dependence upon God. Riches themselves are not evil, but the love of riches leads many into spiritual compromise, pride, greed, and eternal loss.
Believers are called to seek God first, trust Him fully, and use material blessings wisely for His glory and kingdom purpose. True fulfilment, security, and eternal life cannot be found in earthly possessions but only in a living relationship with God.
A heart surrendered to God will handle wealth with wisdom, humility, generosity, and eternal perspective.
