INTRODUCTION:
Attitude is everything. It shapes how we see God, relate with others, and respond to life’s challenges. A godly attitude is the mind and disposition of Christ expressed through our actions, words, and decisions. The Bible calls us to “let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5), showing that our attitude is key to Christian living.
Maintaining a godly attitude doesn't mean denying emotions or pretending problems don’t exist; it means choosing to respond with grace, love, faith, and humility regardless of circumstances. A godly attitude is a product of a renewed mind and a surrendered heart.
In a world full of pride, anger, selfishness, and bitterness, the believer must stand out by reflecting Christ in character. Let us explore how to cultivate and maintain a godly attitude that glorifies God and blesses others.
1. EMBRACE THE MIND OF CHRIST
We must adopt the same mindset and humility that Christ demonstrated.
a) Humility is the Foundation of a Godly Attitude (Philippians 2:5-8)
Jesus humbled Himself even unto death—a true model of selflessness.
b) Think God’s Way, Not the World's Way (Romans 12:2)
We must be transformed by the renewing of our minds.
c) Choose Service Over Status (Mark 10:45)
A godly attitude seeks to serve rather than to be served.
d) Walk in Obedience to God’s Will (John 6:38)
A Christlike mindset is one that submits completely to the Father.
Biblical Example: Jesus washing the disciples’ feet (John 13:3–5) is a perfect model of humility and servant leadership.
2. WALK IN LOVE AND COMPASSION
A godly attitude shows love in both word and deed.
a) Clothe Yourself with Compassion and Kindness (Colossians 3:12)
Our attitude must reflect mercy, gentleness, and patience.
b) Forgive Freely as Christ Forgave You (Ephesians 4:32)
A forgiving heart is essential to maintaining peace.
c) Respond to Offences with Grace (1 Peter 3:9)
Don’t repay evil for evil but bless even those who wrong you.
d) Show Empathy and Understanding (Romans 12:15)
Rejoice with those who rejoice, and mourn with those who mourn.
Biblical Example: The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30-37) demonstrated godly compassion across social and cultural boundaries.
3. GUARD YOUR HEART AND THOUGHTS
Attitude flows from the condition of the heart. Guard it well.
a) Keep Your Heart with All Diligence (Proverbs 4:23)
A polluted heart will produce a corrupted attitude.
b) Think on Things that Edify (Philippians 4:8)
Focus your mind on what is true, noble, and praiseworthy.
c) Avoid Negative Influences and Environments (1 Corinthians 15:33)
Bad company and media can corrupt godly attitudes.
d) Speak Life-Giving Words (Proverbs 18:21)
Words reflect the attitude of the heart—let yours build others up.
Biblical Example: Joseph, despite betrayal, maintained a positive and godly attitude in Egypt (Genesis 39:1-23).
4. STAY FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT
A godly attitude is impossible without the help of the Holy Spirit.
a) The Fruit of the Spirit Shapes Our Attitude (Galatians 5:22-23)
Love, joy, peace, and patience are marks of a Spirit-filled life.
b) Be Constantly Renewed by the Spirit (Ephesians 4:23-24)
The Holy Spirit renews us in knowledge and righteousness.
c) Pray for Grace to Respond Like Christ (Hebrews 4:16)
Through prayer, we draw strength to display the right attitude.
d) Submit Daily to the Leading of the Spirit (Romans 8:14)
A Spirit-led life reflects God’s heart in every situation.
Biblical Example: Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, displayed a godly attitude even while being stoned (Acts 7:55-60).
CONCLUSION:
Your attitude is a spiritual thermometer—it reveals your inner life with God. While circumstances may be beyond your control, your attitude is always your choice. A godly attitude is not automatic; it must be cultivated daily through humility, love, guarded thoughts, and dependence on the Holy Spirit.
When you maintain a godly attitude, you honour God, bless people, and position yourself for promotion. In trials, your attitude determines your altitude. Choose to reflect Christ in your words, reactions, and decisions—no matter what comes your way.
PRAYER POINTS:
1. Lord, give me the mind of Christ in all I do and say.
2. Father, help me walk in love, humility, and compassion daily.
3. I receive grace to maintain a godly attitude even in trials.
4. Holy Spirit, shape my heart and thoughts to reflect Jesus.
5. Lord, help me to always respond with grace, truth, and wisdom.
