THE IMPORTANCE OF SPIRITUAL FOUNDATION

THE IMPORTANCE OF SPIRITUAL FOUNDATION

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Matthew 7:24-27

INTRODUCTION:
A building is only as strong as the foundation on which it rests. In the same way, a believer’s life can only stand the storms of life if it is founded on Christ. Jesus’ parable of the wise and foolish builders in Matthew 7 shows us the critical difference between those who hear and do the Word and those who don’t.

Many people focus on appearances—titles, outward holiness, gifts—but without a deep spiritual foundation, these will not stand when trials come. Foundations are often hidden, but their strength is revealed in adversity.

In these days of great shaking, every believer must return to the basics: a solid foundation in Christ, in the Word, and in truth. Only then can we be unshakable, fruitful, and victorious.

1. THE FOUNDATION DETERMINES THE STABILITY OF A LIFE
What you build your life on will determine how you withstand trials. A weak foundation will collapse under pressure, but a strong foundation guarantees endurance.

a) A firm foundation resists spiritual storms
(Matthew 7:25) – The wise man's house did not fall because it was built on the rock.

b) Shaky foundations lead to collapse
(Matthew 7:27) – The foolish man’s house fell with a great crash.

c) Life's storms will test every foundation
(1 Corinthians 3:13) – Every man's work shall be tested by fire.

d) The foundation must be Christ
(1 Corinthians 3:11) – No other foundation can be laid than Christ.

Biblical Example: The life of Job was tested severely, but because of his strong foundation in God, he did not fall (Job 1:20-22).

2. THE FOUNDATION DETERMINES THE FUTURE OF A BELIEVER
Your spiritual foundation sets the tone for how far you can go and how much you can achieve in God.

a) A strong foundation secures a glorious future
(Jeremiah 29:11) – God has good plans for us, but we must be rightly rooted.

b) A poor foundation limits potential
(Psalm 11:3) – If the foundation be destroyed, what can the righteous do?

c) Solid foundations attract God’s favour
(Luke 6:48) – The man who built well was not moved.

d) Foundations can be rebuilt if broken
(Isaiah 58:12) – You can be a repairer of broken foundations.

Biblical Example: David, though he fell, always returned to God and re-established his foundation through repentance (Psalm 51).

3. THE WORD OF GOD IS THE TRUE SPIRITUAL FOUNDATION
God’s Word is unchanging and eternal. It is the only solid base for lasting spiritual growth.

a) Obedience to the Word builds a strong foundation
(Luke 6:47-48) – The one who hears and does the Word is likened to a wise builder.

b) Hearing alone is not enough
(James 1:22) – Be doers of the Word, not hearers only.

c) The Word equips us for every good work
(2 Timothy 3:16-17) – All Scripture is useful for building and training.

d) The Word cleanses and sanctifies
(John 17:17) – Sanctify them through Your truth.

Biblical Example: Jesus overcame temptation by standing on the Word of God (Matthew 4:1-11).

4. PRAYER AND FELLOWSHIP STRENGTHEN OUR FOUNDATION
To build and maintain a strong spiritual base, we must stay connected to God and His body.

a) Prayer keeps us rooted and nourished
(Jude 1:20) – Build yourself up in your most holy faith, praying in the Spirit.

b) Fellowship encourages spiritual growth
(Hebrews 10:25) – Do not forsake gathering together.

c) Isolation weakens spiritual strength
(Ecclesiastes 4:9-10) – Two are better than one.

d) Accountability helps maintain integrity
(Proverbs 27:17) – Iron sharpens iron.

Biblical Example: The early church grew strong and steady because of prayer and continual fellowship (Acts 2:42-47).

5. A STRONG FOUNDATION LEADS TO LASTING FRUITFULNESS
Fruit that remains comes from roots that go deep in Christ.

a) Rootedness in Christ brings stability and growth
(Colossians 2:6-7) – Be rooted and built up in Him.

b) Deep roots endure through dry seasons
(Jeremiah 17:7-8) – The tree planted by the water will not fear drought.

c) A shallow life cannot bear lasting fruit
(Matthew 13:20-21) – Seed on rocky ground has no root and withers.

d) True success is the result of a strong foundation
(Psalm 1:3) – The righteous shall be like a tree planted by rivers.

Biblical Example: Joseph’s fruitful life in Egypt was sustained by a deep-rooted relationship with God (Genesis 39:2-9).

CONCLUSION:
Your spiritual foundation matters more than your public visibility. It determines how you handle adversity, grow in faith, and fulfil destiny. The time to examine and reinforce your foundation is now.

Don’t settle for shallow Christianity. Go deeper. Build on Christ the solid Rock. Let God’s Word and prayer anchor your life so that when the storms of life blow, you will remain unshaken.
