Description: A genuine encounter with Jesus brings salvation, repentance, restoration, and a transformed life.
INTRODUCTION
Throughout the Gospels, Jesus intentionally sought out those whom society had rejected, despised, or considered beyond redemption. One of the clearest examples is His encounter with Zacchaeus, the chief tax collector in Jericho. Although Zacchaeus possessed wealth and influence, he lacked the peace, joy, and salvation that only Christ could give.
Zacchaeus' desire to see Jesus led him to climb a sycomore tree because his short stature prevented him from seeing over the crowd. What seemed like a simple act of curiosity became a divine appointment that completely changed his life. Jesus stopped beneath the tree, called him by name, and chose to stay in his house.
This encounter demonstrates that God knows every individual personally and desires to restore those who sincerely seek Him. No matter how sinful a person's past may be, one genuine encounter with Jesus can produce complete transformation and a brand-new beginning.
1. DIVINE ENCOUNTERS BEGIN WITH A HUNGER TO SEE JESUS
Every spiritual transformation begins with a heart that genuinely desires to know Christ. God honours those who seek Him sincerely.
a) Develop A Desire For Christ (Luke 19:3)
Zacchaeus was determined to see Jesus despite the obstacles before him. Spiritual hunger attracts divine encounters.
b) Do Not Allow Limitations To Stop You (Luke 19:3-4)
His physical height and the crowd could not prevent him from pursuing Christ. Faith overcomes every obstacle.
c) Take Practical Steps Towards God (James 4:8)
Climbing the tree reflected Zacchaeus' determination. Those who draw near to God will experience His presence.
d) God Rewards Those Who Seek Him (Hebrews 11:6)
The Lord reveals Himself to those who diligently seek Him with sincere hearts.
Biblical Example: Bartimaeus (Mark 10:46-52). Despite opposition from the crowd, Bartimaeus cried out to Jesus until he received his miracle.
2. JESUS KNOWS YOU PERSONALLY
One of the greatest blessings of a divine encounter is discovering that Jesus knows every detail about your life and still loves you completely.
a) Jesus Calls You By Name (Luke 19:5)
Jesus addressed Zacchaeus personally, demonstrating His intimate knowledge of every individual.
b) Christ Sees Beyond Your Reputation (1 Samuel 16:7)
Others saw Zacchaeus as a dishonest tax collector, but Jesus saw a man who could be transformed by grace.
c) God's Love Is Unconditional (Romans 5:8)
Christ reached out to Zacchaeus before any outward change had taken place.
d) Jesus Invites You Into Fellowship (Revelation 3:20)
The Lord desires a personal relationship with everyone who opens their heart to Him.
Biblical Example: Nathanael (John 1:45-49). Jesus revealed supernatural knowledge about Nathanael, proving that He knows every person completely.
3. A GENUINE ENCOUNTER PRODUCES TRUE REPENTANCE
Salvation is more than an emotional experience. It produces a transformed heart that results in changed behaviour.
a) Repentance Begins In The Heart (Acts 3:19)
Zacchaeus' willingness to change came from an inward transformation brought about by Christ.
b) True Repentance Produces Restitution (Luke 19:8)
He voluntarily restored what he had wrongfully taken, demonstrating genuine repentance.
c) God Gives A New Heart (Ezekiel 36:26-27)
The Holy Spirit changes people's desires, attitudes, and character from within.
d) Salvation Produces A New Life (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Those who encounter Christ become new creations with a transformed lifestyle.
Biblical Example: The people of Nineveh (Jonah 3:5-10). Genuine repentance brought about God's mercy and spared the city from destruction.
4. DIVINE ENCOUNTERS RESULT IN SALVATION AND KINGDOM IMPACT
God saves individuals so they may become instruments of blessing to others and glorify His name.
a) Salvation Comes To Your House (Luke 19:9)
Jesus declared that salvation had come to Zacchaeus' household because of his faith.
b) Your Testimony Influences Others (Matthew 5:16)
A transformed life becomes a powerful witness to family, friends, and society.
c) God Restores What Sin Destroyed (Joel 2:25)
Christ restores dignity, purpose, relationships, and hope.
d) Live To Glorify Christ (Colossians 3:17)
Every believer is called to honour Christ through words, actions, and daily conduct.
Biblical Example: Matthew (Matthew 9:9-13). Another tax collector encountered Jesus, left his former lifestyle, and became one of the twelve apostles and the writer of the Gospel of Matthew.
CONCLUSION
Zacchaeus' encounter with Christ reminds us that no one is too sinful, too wealthy, too rejected, or too insignificant to experience God's saving grace. Jesus still seeks those who are willing to respond to His call. One encounter with Him changes hearts, restores broken lives, and produces lasting transformation.
Today, Jesus is still passing by. If you seek Him sincerely, He will reveal Himself to you, forgive your sins, restore your joy, and establish you in His divine purpose. May your life become a testimony that encourages others to seek and follow Christ wholeheartedly.
