ONLY WALK IN THE LIGHT

ONLY WALK IN THE LIGHT

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: 1 John 1:5–7
"This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin."

Supporting Texts: John 8:12; Ephesians 5:8-11; Psalm 119:105; Proverbs 4:18; Isaiah 2:5

INTRODUCTION:
To walk in the light means to live in the truth, in obedience, and in transparency before God and man. It is a life that aligns with the nature and character of God, who is Light and in whom there is no darkness at all. Darkness symbolises sin, ignorance, deception, and disobedience, while light symbolises holiness, righteousness, clarity, and divine direction.

In a world filled with deception, compromise, and spiritual confusion, believers are constantly tempted to stray into darkness. The danger of compromise is not only the loss of testimony but the gradual separation from true fellowship with God. Walking in the light preserves our purity, keeps us on the right path, and ensures our lives shine as testimonies to the world around us.

This message challenges us to examine the paths we walk daily. Are we walking in the light of God's Word or in the shadows of human reasoning and compromise? God is calling us to live lives that reflect His light consistently and deliberately.

1. GOD IS LIGHT AND HIS WAYS ARE PURE
God’s very essence is light—pure, holy, and undefiled. To follow Him is to pursue a life of holiness and truth.

a) God’s nature defines the standard
Because God is light, He can never lead us into sin or deception (James 1:17).

b) His light exposes sin
The light of God uncovers every hidden motive and action (John 3:20-21).

c) Light brings understanding
Walking in the light means living with clarity, not confusion (Psalm 119:130).

d) God’s light leads to life
To walk in His light is to experience eternal life and fullness of joy (John 8:12).

Biblical Example: Moses on Mount Sinai (Exodus 34:29-35) — After spending time with God, Moses’ face radiated light, reflecting divine fellowship and purity.

2. WALKING IN DARKNESS BREAKS FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD
You cannot claim intimacy with God while living in deliberate sin or disobedience.

a) Sin separates from God
God is holy and cannot tolerate sin in fellowship (Isaiah 59:2).

b) Deception is self-inflicted
Claiming to walk with God while in darkness is living a lie (1 John 1:6).

c) Hidden sin weakens spiritual authority
Darkness robs a believer of boldness and power (Proverbs 28:1).

d) Darkness attracts destruction
The devil operates in darkness and thrives on secrecy (Ephesians 5:11).

Biblical Example: King Saul (1 Samuel 15:22-29) — His disobedience and excuses led him from light into darkness and loss of divine favour.

3. WALKING IN THE LIGHT BUILDS GODLY FELLOWSHIP
Light unites; darkness divides. When we live in the light, true Christian unity and trust flourish.

a) Transparency fosters trust
Walking in the light means living openly and honestly (Ephesians 4:25).

b) Unity is birthed in the light
True fellowship cannot exist where there is pretense and secrecy (Acts 2:42-47).

c) Light promotes mutual edification
We help each other grow when we walk in truth (Hebrews 10:24-25).

d) Light removes offence
A heart in the light quickly forgives and avoids division (Colossians 3:13).

Biblical Example: The Early Church (Acts 4:32-35) — They walked in unity and transparency, resulting in great power and grace.

4. THE WORD OF GOD IS OUR LIGHTED PATHWAY
God’s Word is the roadmap for walking in the light.

a) Scripture reveals the right way
The Word is our lamp and light (Psalm 119:105).

b) Obedience to the Word keeps us aligned
Light shines as we apply the Word, not just hear it (James 1:22).

c) The Word rebukes darkness
The truth of Scripture exposes error and sin (2 Timothy 3:16).

d) Meditation fuels illumination
Consistent meditation keeps the light of the Word burning bright (Joshua 1:8).

Biblical Example: The Berean Christians (Acts 17:11) — They searched the Scriptures daily to ensure they walked in the light of truth.

5. STAYING IN THE LIGHT DEMANDS CONSISTENT FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD
Remaining in the light is not a one-time decision, but a daily walk with God.

a) Daily communion with God keeps the light burning
Prayer and worship renew our spiritual fire (Luke 5:16).

b) Fellowship with other believers strengthens our light
Isolation often leads to darkness (Hebrews 10:25).

c) Confession restores broken fellowship
Light returns when we confess and forsake our sins (1 John 1:9).

d) Be intentional about spiritual growth
Growth in grace keeps you from being overcome by darkness (2 Peter 3:18).

Biblical Example: Enoch (Genesis 5:22-24) — He walked with God faithfully and was taken because he pleased God.

CONCLUSION:
God desires that His children walk in His light, not just for their own sake, but to shine that light in a dark world. The benefits of walking in the light are immense—true fellowship with God, joy, victory over sin, and spiritual authority. However, the danger of darkness is deadly and deceptive.

If there’s any area of your life still in darkness, now is the time to step into the light. God is calling you to a life of truth, purity, and power. Refuse to hide in shadows. Walk boldly in the light and shine for Christ.
