IS TITHING RELEVANT TODAY?

IS TITHING RELEVANT TODAY?

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

Main Text: Malachi 3:10

"Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it."

Supporting Texts: Proverbs 3:9-10, Matthew 23:23, Hebrews 7:8, 2 Corinthians 9:6-7

INTRODUCTION

Tithing has been a subject of much debate in the body of Christ. Some argue that it was part of the Old Testament law and is no longer applicable under grace, while others affirm that it remains a biblical principle of honouring God. The question is, "Is tithing still relevant today?"

To answer this, we must examine what tithing is, its biblical foundations, and whether it holds any significance in the New Testament. Understanding the purpose of tithing and its spiritual impact will help believers make informed decisions about their giving.

In this study, we will explore the origin of tithing, its role in the Old and New Testaments, and why it remains a powerful principle for financial stewardship and divine blessing.

1. THE ORIGIN AND PURPOSE OF TITHING

Tithing did not begin with the Law of Moses; it predates the law.

a) Tithing was First Practised by Abraham
Abraham gave a tenth of all to Melchizedek, a priest of God (Genesis 14:18-20).

b) Jacob Continued the Practice
Jacob vowed to give a tenth of all God blessed him with (Genesis 28:20-22).

c) The Law Institutionalised Tithing
Under the Law, God commanded Israel to tithe for the support of the Levites and the work of the temple (Leviticus 27:30).

d) Tithing was for Worship and Gratitude
It was a way to acknowledge God's provision and sovereignty over wealth (Deuteronomy 14:22-23).

e) Biblical Example: The Israelites
They were commanded to tithe as a means of sustaining the priesthood and honouring God (Numbers 18:21).

2. TITHING IN THE OLD TESTAMENT AND UNDER THE LAW

Tithing was a key principle in Israel’s covenant with God.

a) It was a Command, Not a Suggestion
God instructed the Israelites to bring their tithes to His house (Malachi 3:10).

b) Tithes Were Used to Support the Priests and Levites
Since the Levites had no inheritance, tithing sustained them (Numbers 18:24).

c) Neglecting Tithing Brought a Curse
Withholding the tithe was seen as robbing God (Malachi 3:8-9).

d) Faithfulness in Tithing Brought Blessings
God promised to open the windows of heaven for faithful tithers (Malachi 3:10-12).

e) Biblical Example: Hezekiah’s Revival
When Israel returned to God, they resumed tithing, leading to abundance (2 Chronicles 31:4-10).

3. TITHING IN THE NEW TESTAMENT

Many wonder if tithing is still required under grace.

a) Jesus Acknowledged Tithing
He affirmed tithing but emphasised justice, mercy, and faith (Matthew 23:23).

b) Tithing is Mentioned in the New Testament
Hebrews 7:8 speaks of tithes being received by Christ, our High Priest.

c) Giving is Encouraged as a Principle
Though not commanded as a law, generous giving is a New Testament principle (2 Corinthians 9:6-7).

d) The Early Church Practised Radical Giving
They shared their resources to meet the needs of others (Acts 4:34-35).

e) Biblical Example: The Macedonian Church
They gave generously despite their poverty, showing that giving remains a kingdom principle (2 Corinthians 8:1-5).

4. WHY TITHING IS STILL RELEVANT TODAY

Though we are under grace, the principles of tithing still apply.

a) Tithing Honours God
It acknowledges Him as our provider (Proverbs 3:9-10).

b) Tithing Supports the Work of Ministry
It helps sustain pastors, missionaries, and church activities (1 Corinthians 9:13-14).

c) Tithing Opens the Door for Financial Blessing
God promises abundance to those who give faithfully (Luke 6:38).

d) Tithing Builds Discipline in Stewardship
It teaches believers to prioritise God in their finances (Matthew 6:33).

e) Biblical Example: Cornelius
His consistent giving attracted divine visitation (Acts 10:1-4).

5. THE RIGHT ATTITUDE TOWARDS TITHING

Tithing should not be done out of compulsion, but with the right heart.

a) Give with Joy and Gratitude
God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7).

b) Give in Faith, Not in Fear
Trusting God releases His provision (Malachi 3:10).

c) Give with the Right Motive
It should be an act of worship, not a means to manipulate God (Matthew 6:1-4).

d) Be Consistent in Your Giving
Faithfulness in tithing brings long-term blessings (Luke 16:10).

e) Biblical Example: The Widow’s Offering
She gave sacrificially, and Jesus commended her faith (Mark 12:41-44).

CONCLUSION

Tithing remains a relevant biblical principle. It was practised before the Law, reinforced under the Law, and acknowledged in the New Testament. While we are not under legalistic obligation, tithing is a way to honour God, support His work, and position ourselves for His blessings.

As believers, we should see tithing as an opportunity to demonstrate our faith and gratitude. God does not need our money, but He desires our obedience and trust. When we give with the right heart, we activate the blessings of financial increase, divine protection, and supernatural provision.
