RECOGNISING AND BREAKING PERSONAL LIMITATIONS

RECOGNISING AND BREAKING PERSONAL LIMITATIONS

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

INTRODUCTION:
One of the greatest hindrances to progress is not the opposition from others but the resistance within oneself. Internal limitations—such as fear, insecurity, guilt, and feelings of inadequacy—often do more damage than external enemies. Many people live in self-imposed cages, allowing what they think about themselves to define how far they go in life.

This was the case with Gideon. Though chosen by God to be a deliverer, he hid in fear, believing he was too insignificant to make a difference. But God saw a mighty man of valour in him, and called him out of hiding into divine assignment. Until he broke free from that limited self-image, Gideon could not fulfil his calling.

Likewise, until we address the limiting beliefs within us, we may never fully experience the unstoppable life God designed for us. Recognising and breaking these internal barriers is the first step to destiny fulfilment.

1. IDENTIFYING INTERNAL LIMITATIONS
Before you can conquer what is outside, you must confront what is within. Self-awareness is necessary for transformation.

a) Fear of Failure (2 Timothy 1:7)
Fear is a spirit that paralyses destiny. Many dreams have died because people were too afraid to try. Fear makes you focus on what could go wrong rather than what God can do.

b) Negative Identity and Self-Image (Judges 6:15)
Gideon saw himself as the least in his father's house. When you define yourself by your background or weaknesses, you limit your capacity to rise.

c) Past Experiences That Shape Present Mindsets (Isaiah 43:18)
When people allow past failures, traumas, or disappointments to dictate how they live today, they remain stuck in cycles of limitation. God calls us to forget the former things and embrace the new.

d) Comparison and Insecurity (Galatians 6:4)
Looking at others to measure your value only breeds envy and inadequacy. God made you unique, and comparing yourself to others only blinds you to your own potential.

Biblical Example: The ten spies saw themselves as grasshoppers, not because the giants called them so, but because they had a poor self-image (Numbers 13:33).

2. GOD’S VIEW VERSUS YOUR VIEW
True freedom comes when you stop seeing yourself through your own eyes and begin to see yourself through God's eyes.

a) God Sees Potential, Not Present Weakness (Judges 6:12)
God called Gideon a mighty man before he fought any battle. God often speaks to your destiny, not your current condition.

b) God Uses the Weak to Display His Strength (2 Corinthians 12:9)
God intentionally uses the weak so that His power can be glorified. Your weakness is not a disqualifier—it is a divine opportunity.

c) He Has Equipped You With All You Need (2 Peter 1:3)
God has already given you everything required for life and godliness. You are not lacking—you are loaded with divine resources.

d) Your Limitations Are Not a Surprise to God (Exodus 4:10–12)
Even when Moses complained about being a stammerer, God reassured him that He was the one who made the mouth. Your weaknesses do not intimidate God.

Biblical Example: Jeremiah felt too young and unqualified, but God reminded him that he was ordained before birth to be a prophet to the nations (Jeremiah 1:6-10).

3. BREAKING FREE FROM LIMITING BELIEFS
The path to freedom is deliberate. You must engage spiritual and practical strategies to rise above mental barriers.

a) Renew Your Mind with God’s Word (Romans 12:2)
The transformation of your life begins with the renewal of your mind. When you feed your mind with truth, you replace lies that limit you.

b) Speak Life Over Yourself Daily (Proverbs 18:21)
Words carry power. When you continually speak what God says about you, your spirit begins to align with His promises.

c) Surround Yourself with Encouragement (Proverbs 27:17)
Iron sharpens iron. Associating with people who see your potential will help you break free from mental strongholds.

d) Take Bold Steps Despite Fear (Joshua 1:9)
God commanded Joshua to be strong and courageous—not because he wouldn’t feel fear, but because fear must not dictate action. Do it afraid if necessary, but take the step.

Biblical Example: David rejected Saul’s armour and chose what he knew—his sling and stones. He refused to let others define how he should fight (1 Samuel 17:38–40).

CONCLUSION:
Internal limitations are subtle enemies, but once exposed and addressed, they lose their power. The unstoppable life is not reserved for the perfect but for those who dare to believe what God says about them. When you align your thoughts and identity with God’s Word, you rise above every barrier.

Today, God is calling you out of smallness. Break free from fear, low self-worth, and the labels of the past. Your real identity is hidden in Christ, and when you walk in that truth, nothing can stop you from fulfilling your destiny.
